ISO 37301 certification in Kenya at a glance
In Kenya, ISO 37301 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
A compliance management system answers a practical Kenyan problem: obligations arrive from many regulators at once. The Central Bank of Kenya's September 2026 draft Risk Management Guidelines describe a Board-approved compliance management framework, the Bribery Regulations, 2022 set expectations on prevention procedures, and the Data Protection Act, 2019 brings registration, audit and breach duties; none of them names ISO 37301, and the draft is not yet in force. Banks, data-heavy organisations and regulated manufacturers are the typical applicants. When choosing a body, look at the accreditation it can show, since the AFRAC certificate held by KENAS has no compliance entry. Certificates are awarded by certification bodies and never by Sterling. The Nairobi office of Sterling supports the programme with 20+ years of experience, Effivity and Sterling Academy included.
Who needs ISO 37301 in Kenya, and what happens without it
In Kenya the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Banks and licensed financial institutionsThe CBK's September 2026 draft guidelines describe a Board-approved compliance management framework.
- Organisations that handle personal dataThe Data Protection Act, 2019 sets duties, audits and breach reporting that need a tracked obligations register.
- Regulated manufacturers, food businesses and employersSeveral regulators set separate licensing, inspection and reporting duties that a compliance system can organise.
- Companies with public-sector customersIntegrity and compliance programmes support bidding and contract performance.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 37301 requires a company to prove six things about how it meets its legal and other obligations.
In Kenya these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 37301 explained →

How long does ISO 37301 certification take in Kenya?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Kenya these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Compliance obligations, business units and sites in scope
- Maturity of the obligations register, risk assessment and controls
- Reporting, investigation and monitoring arrangements
- Certification body scheduling and customer requirements
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 37301 certification cost in Kenya?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Kenya these factors move both.
- Number of obligations, units and staff in scope
- Compliance tooling and training
- Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
- Policy and evidence remediation
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 37301 consultants and certification bodies in Kenya
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 37301 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Kenya are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.
Laws and regulations that drive ISO 37301 in Kenya (4)
| Instrument | How it treats the standard |
|---|---|
| CBK draft Risk Management Guidelines (September 2026) | Does not name ISO 37301 The draft describes a Board-approved compliance management framework for institutions; it is a draft for comment and not yet in force. |
| Bribery Regulations, 2022 (Legal Notice No. 88 of 2022) | Does not name ISO 37301 Set expectations on bribery-prevention procedures that a compliance system can embed. |
| Data Protection Act, 2019 | Does not name ISO 37301 Creates obligations that compliance programmes track, including registration, periodic audit and breach notification. |
| KENAS accreditation of certification bodies | Context ISO 37301 is not among the sub-scopes on KENAS's AFRAC certificate; ask each body which accreditation backs its compliance certificates. |
Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Kenya
Choose a certification body accredited for this standard by the Kenya Accreditation Service (KENAS) or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. ISO 37301 does not appear in the sub-scopes on KENAS's AFRAC certificate, so ask each body which accreditation backs its compliance management certificates and whether your regulator or customer accepts it. Audit language
Kiswahili and English are the official languages and English is the usual language of business records, standards and tenders; interviews on the shop floor or with suppliers may run in Kiswahili or another local language. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
Audits sample obligations, controls and records; interviews and document review can be remote at the certification body's discretion.
ISO 37301 in Kenya: questions clients ask
Does the CBK require ISO 37301?
No. The CBK's September 2026 draft risk guidelines describe a Board-approved compliance management framework but do not name ISO 37301, and they are drafts for comment. Confirm the final text and your licence conditions with the CBK before you plan around them.
Can ISO 37301 cover several Kenyan laws at once?
Yes, that is its purpose. It organises obligations from different laws, such as bribery prevention and data protection, into one register with owners, controls and monitoring. It does not replace any legal duty, so confirm each regulator's requirements with counsel.
Is ISO 37301 in KENAS's AFRAC sub-scopes?
ISO 37301 is absent from the AFRAC sub-scopes that KENAS lists. A compliance management certificate therefore depends on what each certification body can show. Request its accreditation evidence and scope, then confirm with your regulator or customer that it will be recognised before an audit is booked.
What lengthens an ISO 37301 programme?
The number of obligations, business units and sites in scope sets the workload. The maturity of your obligations register, risk assessment and controls follows, with reporting and investigation arrangements. Certification body scheduling then fixes the dates, so list your obligations first.
