In short

ISO 13485 certification in Italy at a glance

Regulation (EU) 2017/745 and Decreto legislativo 5 agosto 2022, n. 137 is the instrument itself: it applies to the organisations within its scope, and buyers and partners in Italy ask for evidence that you meet it.

Medical device makers in Italy work under two layers. Regulation (EU) 2017/745 applies directly, and Legislative Decree 137/2022 adapts national law to it, while the Ministero della Salute's Direzione generale dei dispositivi medici publishes information on notified bodies and device vigilance. ISO 13485 is the quality system standard that buyers and notified bodies recognise, but certification by an accredited body is a separate step from notified body assessment of a device. Accredia is Italy's national accreditation body; Sterling does not certify. Sterling's Frankfurt office supports manufacturers, contract manufacturers, component suppliers and software developers across Italy with design controls, risk management, supplier controls and complaint handling, working through Effivity and including Sterling Academy training for the team, on-site where the work needs it and remotely otherwise.

The need

Who needs ISO 13485 in Italy, and what happens without it

In Italy the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Manufacturers placing medical devices on the EU market from ItalyRegulation (EU) 2017/745 and Italy's adapting decree set the legal frame for devices.
  • Contract manufacturers and component suppliersDevice makers ask suppliers for a certified quality system.
  • Software and digital health developersSoftware that qualifies as a device sits under the same Regulation.
  • Companies preparing for notified body assessmentNotified bodies assess conformity; the Ministry of Health publishes information on them.

Requirements

ISO 13485 requirements in Italy

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 13485 requires a company to prove six things about making medical devices that are safe and work as intended.

Regulatory requirements are built inThe quality system covers the regulatory requirements of each market you supply and your role in the device supply chain.
Design is controlledDesign and development are planned, verified and validated, with changes controlled and a file kept for each device.
Risk management runs through the life cycleRisks to safety and performance are managed from design through production, delivery and use.
Production and suppliers are controlledProduction, process validation, cleanliness, sterilisation where relevant and purchased components are controlled and recorded.
Every device can be tracedIdentification and traceability let you find the components, batches and records behind any device you have released.
Complaints and feedback drive actionComplaints and nonconformities are handled, reported to regulators where required, and closed through corrective and preventive action.

In Italy these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 13485 explained →

Time

How long does ISO 13485 certification take in Italy?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Italy these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Device classes and technical documentation already prepared
  • Design controls, risk management and complaint handling records
  • Supplier and outsourced-process controls
  • Certification-body availability around the August holiday period

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 13485 certification cost in Italy?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Italy these factors move both.

  • Device portfolio and risk classes
  • Number of sites and outsourced processes
  • Certification body fees quoted separately from consulting

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 13485 consultants and certification bodies in Italy

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 13485 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Italy are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Italy

Use a certification body accredited for this standard by Accredia or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. ISO 13485 certification by an accredited body is separate from conformity assessment by a notified body under Regulation (EU) 2017/745. Edition and transition details: ISO 13485 hub →

    Audit language

Audits are held in Italian or English; agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.

ISO 13485 in Italy: questions clients ask

Does ISO 13485 replace notified body assessment?

No. Notified bodies assess conformity under Regulation (EU) 2017/745, and the Ministry of Health publishes information on them, while an ISO 13485 certificate comes from an accredited management-system certification body. The two are different assessments. Ask your notified body what role your quality-system certificate plays in its process.

Which Italian law adapts national rules to the medical devices Regulation?

Legislative Decree 5 August 2022, n. 137, which adapts national legislation to Regulation (EU) 2017/745 on medical devices and to the related Regulation (EU) 2020/561. It sits alongside the Regulation, which applies directly. Ask regulatory counsel which provisions bear on your device class and role in the supply chain.

Which Italian authority publishes information on medical devices?

The Ministero della Salute, through its Direzione generale dei dispositivi medici. Its site carries pages on notified bodies, on the reporting system for device incidents and on clinical investigations. Check those pages for the current process before you plan a submission, and ask regulatory counsel where your device sits.

Who can certify ISO 13485 in Italy?

Choose a certification body accredited for management-system certification, usually by Accredia or another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements. Sterling prepares the quality system but does not certify. Have the body show its accredited scope in writing and confirm it covers medical device quality systems before you book an audit.
