AS9100 certification in Italy at a glance
In Italy, AS9100 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
Aerospace work in Italy is bought through the supply chain, and the 9100 series is the language of that chain. IAQG's OASIS database lists suppliers certified or registered under its rules and records the accreditation bodies, certification bodies and authenticated aerospace auditors involved, which is how buyers select and monitor suppliers. The requirement normally reaches suppliers through their prime contractor's terms. Cyber rules add a separate layer, because space and aerospace and defence are among the sectors of the national cybersecurity perimeter overseen by the ACN. Certificates come from certification bodies working within the accreditation framework, with Accredia as Italy's national accreditation body; Sterling does not certify. Sterling's Frankfurt office supports machining, composites, electronics and engineering suppliers across Italy, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included in the engagement.
Who needs AS9100 in Italy, and what happens without it
In Italy the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Aerospace and defence suppliers to prime contractorsBuyers use IAQG's OASIS database to select and monitor suppliers certified to the 9100 series.
- Machine shops, composite and materials suppliersProcess control and traceability expectations flow down from the prime through purchase terms.
- Space-sector companiesSpace and aerospace sit among the sectors of the national cybersecurity perimeter, which adds a cyber dimension to supplier assessment.
- Maintenance and engineering service firms entering aerospaceTheir quality system is assessed through certification bodies recorded in OASIS.

Strip away the vocabulary and AS9100 asks a supplier to prove six things about delivering aerospace products safely and on time.
In Italy these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: AS9100 explained →

How long does AS9100 certification take in Italy?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Italy these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Customer-specific and flow-down requirements from primes
- Configuration management, first article and traceability records
- Special-process controls at the site
- Certification-body availability around the August holiday period
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does AS9100 certification cost in Italy?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Italy these factors move both.
- Number of sites and product families
- Special processes and outsourced operations
- Certification body fees quoted separately from consulting
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
AS9100 consultants and certification bodies in Italy
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers AS9100 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Italy are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

AS9100 in Italy: questions clients ask
What is OASIS and why does it matter for AS9100?
OASIS is the Online Aerospace Supplier Information System run by IAQG, an online resource listing suppliers certified or registered under IAQG rules to the 9100-series requirements. It also records the accreditation bodies, certification bodies and authenticated aerospace auditors involved. Aerospace buyers use it for supplier selection and surveillance, so ask your certification body how your certificate will appear there.
Is AS9100 a legal requirement in Italy?
Treat it as a customer requirement rather than a statutory one. The scheme runs through IAQG's OASIS database and through aerospace buyers' supplier-selection rules, so the purchase terms of your prime contractor decide whether you need it. Confirm the exact certification scope your customers expect before you plan the project.
Does Italian cybersecurity law touch aerospace suppliers?
It can. The national cybersecurity perimeter, created by decree-law 105/2019 and Law 133/2019, lists space and aerospace and defence among its sectors, and the ACN informs each entity the President of the Council of Ministers identifies. Inclusion depends on exercising an essential function or service, so it is not a general duty for every supplier. Ask counsel or the ACN.
Does an AS9100 certification body need accreditation?
The body should sit inside the accreditation framework. OASIS records the national accreditation bodies, certification bodies and authenticated aerospace auditors involved, and Accredia is Italy's national accreditation body for management-system certification. Whether a particular body is recognised for the 9100 series is something to confirm in OASIS and with the body before you commit to an audit.
