In short

ISO 42001 certification in Ireland at a glance

Two Irish instruments bear on ISO/IEC 42001. Not one of them names it. So why do buyers in Ireland keep asking for the certificate?

Ireland now has its own AI statute. The Regulation of Artificial Intelligence Act 2026, enacted on 21 July 2026, gives further effect to Regulation (EU) 2024/1689, establishes Oifig IS na hÉireann and amends the Central Bank Act 1942, so financial regulators are part of the picture. The Act does not cite ISO/IEC 42001, a voluntary standard for an AI management system that a certification body accredited by INAB or another recognised body can audit. The Data Protection Commission, meanwhile, lists an AI Insights Report among its latest publications and remains the GDPR supervisor for AI that processes personal data. Technology and software firms in Dublin and Cork are among those that gain from a clear inventory and governance structure. Sterling's London office supports Irish organisations with AI inventories, risk assessment, controls and internal audit, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included in the engagement.

The need

Who needs ISO 42001 in Ireland, and what happens without it

In Ireland the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Providers and deployers of AI systemsThe Regulation of Artificial Intelligence Act 2026 gives further effect to Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 and establishes Oifig IS na hÉireann.
  • Software and SaaS companies embedding AI in productsCustomers ask how AI risks, data and oversight are governed.
  • Financial services firms using AI in decisionsThe 2026 Act amends the Central Bank Act 1942, so financial regulators are involved in the AI regime.
  • Organisations processing personal data with AIThe DPC publishes AI insight work alongside its GDPR role.
  • Medtech and health technology firmsProducts that combine AI with device functions meet several regimes at once.

Requirements

ISO 42001 requirements in Ireland

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 42001 requires a company to prove six things about how it governs the AI it builds or uses.

You know where AI is usedThe AI systems you develop, provide or use are identified, together with the role your organisation plays for each.
Leadership sets the rules for AITop management sets an AI policy and objectives, assigns accountability and provides resources for responsible use.
You assessed AI risks and impactsRisks from AI systems, and their impacts on individuals, groups and society, are assessed before and during use and then treated.
Each AI system is managed through its lifeDesign, data, testing, deployment, monitoring and retirement follow defined processes with records you can show.
Data and third parties are under controlThe quality and origin of data, and suppliers of models or components, are managed against your own requirements.
You monitor, audit and improveAI systems and the management system are monitored, audited internally and reviewed by management, with problems corrected.

In Ireland these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 42001 explained →

How Sterling gets an Irish company certified

How to get ISO 42001 certified in Ireland

One team from the London office carries the work from scoping to certificate. Clients in Ireland are served from Sterling's London office, on-site where the work needs it and remotely otherwise.

  1. Discovery call and scopeEntities, locations, regulators and target date, agreed before any proposal.
  2. Gap assessment against ISO/IEC 42001 and the Irish requirements that apply to youControls you already run for your regulators and customers are reused, not rebuilt.
  3. Your system built with your team in EffivityRisks, controls, evidence, incidents and reviews in one live system the auditor can see.
  4. Internal audit, management review and corrective actionsYour internal auditors trained by Sterling; the evidence proven before the certification body arrives.
  5. Certification body stage 1 and stage 2, then surveillanceAn accredited body audits and decides. Sterling supports the audits and the three-year cycle.

Time

How long does ISO 42001 certification take in Ireland?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Ireland these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Inventory of AI systems and their risk level
  • Existing ISO/IEC 27001 or ISO 9001 maturity
  • Data governance and human oversight arrangements
  • Supplier and model provenance review

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 42001 certification cost in Ireland?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Ireland these factors move both.

  • Number of AI systems and use cases in scope
  • Impact assessment and testing effort
  • Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
  • Integration with ISO/IEC 27001 and ISO/IEC 27701

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 42001 consultants and certification bodies in Ireland

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 42001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Ireland are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Ireland

Use a certification body accredited for this standard by INAB, the Irish National Accreditation Board, or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. INAB's published list of certifiable management systems does not name ISO/IEC 42001, so ask the body to show its scope for the standard. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 42001 hub →

Audit language

English is the working language of Irish business, so audits and controlled documents are normally in English; agree the language with the certification body at application and follow any requirement in a tender or contract.

Remote and on-site

Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; operational sites are normally visited on-site.

ISO 42001 in Ireland: questions clients ask

Does the Regulation of Artificial Intelligence Act 2026 require ISO 42001?

No. The Act does not cite ISO/IEC 42001. It was enacted on 21 July 2026, establishes Oifig IS na hÉireann and gives further effect to the EU Artificial Intelligence Act. ISO/IEC 42001 is a voluntary management system standard that can help organise AI governance. Ask your counsel which legal duties apply to your systems.

Which Irish body is set up by the 2026 AI Act?

Oifig IS na hÉireann, established by section 8 of the Regulation of Artificial Intelligence Act 2026 as a body corporate. The Act also provides for relevant market surveillance authorities. How the Office and those authorities divide the work in practice is a matter for them, so check their guidance for your sector.

How does ISO 42001 connect with GDPR work in Ireland?

AI systems often process personal data, so the Data Protection Commission remains the GDPR supervisory authority and has published an AI Insights Report. An AI management system can document data sources, oversight and impact checks, but it does not replace GDPR accountability records. Confirm the interplay with your counsel.

Which bodies certify ISO 42001 in Ireland?

AI management system certificates come from certification bodies accredited by INAB or within the international recognition arrangements, with ISO/IEC 42001 inside the scope. INAB's published list does not name it, so ask the body to show its scope. Sterling prepares the management system and does not issue the certificate.
