SOC 1 attestation in Gurugram at a glance

Gurugram's finance and accounting outsourcers meet SOC 1 through their customers' auditors. The district administration calls the city the financial centre of Haryana and a hub of multinational companies, and BPOs in the city run accounts payable, receivables, payroll and reconciliations for clients elsewhere. When such processing could affect a client's financial statements, the client's auditor asks what controls the provider operates and who has tested them. A SOC 1 report answers that: an independent CPA firm describes the service organisation's system and tests the controls relevant to user entities' financial reporting, at a date or over a period. It is an attestation, not an ISO certificate. Sterling prepares control descriptions and evidence with Gurugram teams; the report belongs to the independent firm.

SOC 1 in Gurugram: questions clients ask

Which Gurugram providers need a SOC 1 report?

Providers whose processing affects customers' financial statements, such as payroll, accounts payable, collections or fund administration for clients. The customer's auditor usually requests it. Sterling prepares the provider by documenting the system and testing readiness; an independent CPA firm issues the report and forms the opinion.

How is SOC 1 different from SOC 2 for a Gurugram BPO?

SOC 1 concerns controls that may affect a client's financial reporting, while SOC 2 concerns security, availability, confidentiality, processing integrity or privacy. A BPO doing finance work may need both. Ask clients and their auditors which they require, because the two reports answer different questions and are not interchangeable.
