SOC 1 attestation in India at a glance
One Indian instrument bears on SOC 1. It does not name the standard. So why do buyers in India keep asking for the report?
Finance and accounting outsourcing is where SOC 1 matters. When an Indian provider runs payroll, accounts payable, transaction processing or fund administration for a foreign client, that client's auditor needs comfort over the provider's controls, and a SOC 1 report gives it. The AICPA describes SOC 1 as an examination of controls at a service organisation that are likely to be relevant to user entities' internal control over financial reporting, intended for the user entities and the CPAs who audit their financial statements. It is an attestation, not a certification, issued by a licensed CPA firm; a Type 1 report covers control design at a point in time and a Type 2 report adds operating effectiveness over a period. Domestically, RBI's IT outsourcing direction already accepts independent third-party audits of common providers. Sterling's Navi Mumbai office defines control objectives with the client's finance and operations teams, closes gaps and supports the service auditor, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included. Questions follow.
Who needs SOC 1 in India, and what happens without it
In India the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Finance and accounting outsourcing providersTheir controls affect clients' internal control over financial reporting.
- Payroll, transaction-processing and fund-administration service firmsClients' auditors rely on SOC 1 reports.
- Providers to Indian regulated entitiesRBI's IT outsourcing direction allows pooled audits by an independent third-party auditor.

Strip away the vocabulary and SOC 1 asks a service organisation to report on six things about controls affecting its clients' financial reporting.
In India these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: SOC 1 explained →

How long does SOC 1 attestation take in India?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In India these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Type 1 versus Type 2 and the length of the period covered
- Number of processes and control objectives in scope
- Maturity of control evidence
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does SOC 1 attestation cost in India?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the CPA firm’s fees, which are quoted separately. In India these factors move both.
- Number of processes, clients and systems in scope
- Service auditor fees quoted separately from consulting
- Control remediation needed
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
SOC 1 consultants and auditors in India
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; a licensed CPA firm then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers SOC 1 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in India are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.
Laws and regulations that drive SOC 1 in India (2)
| Instrument | How it treats the standard |
|---|---|
| AICPA SOC 1 — SOC for Service Organizations: ICFR | Attestation framework Examination of controls at a service organisation likely relevant to user entities' internal control over financial reporting. |
| RBI Master Direction on Outsourcing of Information Technology Services (RBI/2023-24/102) | Expected in practice Independent third-party audits of providers, including pooled audits; SOC 1 not cited. |
"Expected in practice" means the instrument asks for the outcomes SOC 1 covers without naming a standard, and SOC 1 is what buyers and regulators commonly accept as evidence of them.
Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in India
Attestation, not certification: a SOC 1 report is issued by a licensed CPA firm under AICPA standards (or an ISAE 3402 / equivalent report by a qualified auditor). No firm is named here unless verified. Edition and transition details: SOC 1 hub →
Audit language
Reports are issued in English.
Remote and on-site
Fieldwork is commonly remote with system access; on-site visits are at the service auditor's discretion.
SOC 1 in India: questions clients ask
SOC 1 or SOC 2?
They answer different needs. SOC 1 covers controls relevant to clients' financial reporting, while SOC 2 covers security, availability, processing integrity, confidentiality or privacy. Pick SOC 1 when clients' auditors need assurance over reporting; pick SOC 2 for questions about your service controls.
Who issues a SOC 1 report?
A licensed CPA firm issues it under AICPA standards. Reports in the ISAE 3402 style are issued by qualified auditors. Ask which form your client or its own auditor will accept before choosing a firm. The service auditor forms the opinion, and the report is issued in English.
