In short

ISO 17025 accreditation in Ghana at a glance

In Ghana, ISO/IEC 17025 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

Accreditation, not certification, is the recognition a Ghanaian laboratory seeks, and the Ghana Accreditation Service is the national body. A Ministry of Trade and Industry document names ISO/IEC 17025 calibration of mass, pressure, volume and temperature, and general testing in food microbiology and chemistry, as its priority areas, while Global ACI lists the Service as an Associate Member rather than a signatory, so a laboratory should ask what recognition an accreditation carries abroad. The Ghana Standards Authority runs testing and calibration under its metrology mandate, and the Energy Commission lists third-party accredited laboratories among its regulation pages, so regulators and customers both create demand. Sterling cannot grant accreditation. Quality documentation, method validation, uncertainty estimates and assessment preparation for laboratories are supported from Sterling's Lagos office, and Effivity and Sterling Academy are part of the engagement.

The need

Who needs ISO 17025 in Ghana, and what happens without it

In Ghana the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Calibration laboratories serving industry and minesThe Ghana Accreditation Service names calibration of mass, pressure, volume and temperature among its priority areas.
  • Food, water and agricultural testing laboratoriesThe Service names food microbiology and chemistry as priority testing areas, and food exporters need results buyers trust.
  • Manufacturers with in-house quality control laboratoriesCustomers and regulators accept test results more readily when the laboratory is accredited for the method.
  • Laboratories testing appliances or energy equipmentThe Energy Commission regulates appliance efficiency and lists third-party accredited laboratories among its regulation pages.
  • Mining and environmental sampling laboratoriesAssay, effluent and environmental monitoring results feed permits and reports where accredited methods add weight.

Requirements

ISO 17025 requirements in Ghana

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 17025 requires a laboratory to prove six things about its competence and the results it reports.

You are impartialCommercial, financial or other pressures do not influence results, and risks to impartiality are identified and managed.
Staff are competent and authorisedEach person who performs, reviews or reports work is qualified, trained, monitored and authorised for those tasks.
Equipment is calibrated and traceableEquipment is fit for purpose and calibrated, with measurement results traceable to recognised references.
Methods are validated or verifiedMethods suit the work, are validated where needed or verified before use, and measurement uncertainty is evaluated.
Results are checked and reported properlyQuality control and proficiency testing confirm validity, and reports state results clearly, accurately and without ambiguity.
The management system worksComplaints, nonconforming work, risks, internal audits and management review run under a documented management system.

In Ghana these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 17025 explained →

Time

How long does ISO 17025 accreditation take in Ghana?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Ghana these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Scope of tests and calibrations to be accredited
  • Method validation, verification and measurement uncertainty evidence
  • Traceability of reference standards and equipment
  • Proficiency testing participation and the accreditation body's scheduling

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 17025 accreditation cost in Ghana?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the accreditation body’s fees, which are quoted separately. In Ghana these factors move both.

  • Number of methods, matrices and ranges in scope
  • Equipment calibration and reference materials
  • Accreditation body application and assessment fees, quoted by the body and separate from consulting
  • Environmental control and facility upgrades

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 17025 consultants and assessors in Ghana

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; the accreditation body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 17025 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Ghana are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Ghana Accreditation Service (GHAS) and Global ACI membershipAccreditation
A Ministry of Trade and Industry document names ISO/IEC 17025 calibration (mass, pressure, volume, temperature) and general testing (food microbiology and chemistry) as the Service's priority areas; Global ACI lists it as an Associate Member.
Ghana Standards Authority — testing, metrology and calibrationContext
The Authority states its mandated activities include testing, calibration and verification of weights and measures, and its homepage invites clients to have products tested in its accredited laboratories.
    Energy Commission — regulation pagesContext
The Commission's regulation pages include one for third-party accredited laboratories, alongside appliance efficiency and market surveillance reports.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Ghana

Laboratory competence is recognised by accreditation, not certification. The Ghana Accreditation Service is the national accreditation body and names ISO/IEC 17025 calibration and testing among its priority areas, while Global ACI lists it as an Associate Member rather than a signatory, so ask what recognition the accreditation carries for your customers. Some laboratories hold accreditation from bodies in other economies instead. Neither Sterling nor a certification body accredits laboratories. Read the accreditation body's published requirements and confirm your scope before applying. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 17025 hub →

    Audit language

English is the usual audit and document language; agree it with the certification body at application, and say early if interviews will run in a local language.

    Remote and on-site

Assessments examine the laboratory, equipment, methods and records on-site; document review, method validation files and preparation for witnessing can be handled remotely.

ISO 17025 in Ghana: questions clients ask

Which body accredits laboratories in Ghana?

The Ghana Accreditation Service is the national accreditation body, described in a Ministry of Trade and Industry document as set up under the Ghana Accreditation Service Act, 2023, with calibration and general testing among its priority areas. Global ACI lists it as an Associate Member. Check directly with the Service about current accredited scopes and what recognition customers abroad will give them.

    Is ISO 17025 a certificate?

No. A laboratory is accredited against ISO/IEC 17025 for a defined scope of methods, not certified, and the accreditation body issues the decision after assessing competence, impartiality and results. Neither Sterling nor a certification body can grant it. Put your tests and calibrations, with ranges and uncertainties, in the scope statement you send.

Which Ghanaian laboratory types does the national service prioritise?

A Ministry of Trade and Industry document lists calibration of mass, pressure, volume and temperature, and general testing in food microbiology and chemistry, plus clinical testing under ISO 15189, as priority areas for the Service. Laboratories in other fields should ask the Service whether and when it will accept their scope, and whether accreditation elsewhere is more practical.

Does accreditation help a laboratory serving Ghana's food or appliance sectors?

It can. The Food and Drugs Authority runs its own laboratory services and the Energy Commission lists third-party accredited laboratories among its regulation pages, so accredited results carry weight with inspectors and customers. Neither makes accreditation a blanket legal condition. Ask the relevant authority which results it accepts before investing in a scope extension.
