In short

IATF 16949 certification in Germany at a glance

In Germany, IATF 16949 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

Three of the IATF's OEM members — BMW Group, Mercedes-Benz AG and Volkswagen Group — are German, and VDA QMC runs an IATF oversight office, so IATF 16949 sits close to home for German automotive suppliers. The standard is published by the International Automotive Task Force and certified only by certification bodies the IATF has approved under its Rules; it does not run through DAkkS accreditation. VDA QMC's oversight office witnesses IATF 16949 audits to check that approved bodies and their auditors meet the scheme. For a supplier, the hard work lies in the core tools — APQP, PPAP, FMEA, MSA and SPC — and in each OEM's customer-specific requirements, which auditors test alongside the standard. Many German suppliers also face VDA 6.3 process audits and TISAX assessments from the same customers. Sterling's Frankfurt office implements the quality system and core tools, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included in the engagement. German questions follow.

The need

Who needs IATF 16949 in Germany, and what happens without it

In Germany the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Suppliers of production and service parts to automotive OEMsIATF OEM members, including BMW Group, Mercedes-Benz AG and Volkswagen Group, work with the IATF 16949 scheme.
  • Tier-2 and tier-3 suppliers flowing down customer requirementsTier-1 suppliers pass IATF requirements down the chain.
  • Automotive suppliers that also need TISAXQuality and information security assessments often run side by side.

IATF 16949 requirements in Germany

Strip away the vocabulary and IATF 16949 asks a supplier to prove six things about supplying vehicle makers without defects.

Customer-specific requirements are built inEach vehicle maker's own requirements are identified and applied alongside the standard.
New products are planned for qualityNew products follow advanced quality planning, and parts are approved by the customer before supply begins.
Failure risks are analysed and controlledFailure modes are analysed for product and process, and control plans set out how each risk is managed.
Measurement and capability are provenMeasurement systems are analysed, and process capability is monitored with statistical methods.
Product safety and contingencies are coveredSafety-related parts and processes are managed specifically, and contingency plans protect supply when disruption hits.
Problems are solved and suppliers developedDefects are solved with disciplined problem-solving, error-proofing is used, and your own suppliers are developed and monitored.

In Germany these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: IATF 16949 explained →

Time

How long does IATF 16949 certification take in Germany?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Germany these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Eligibility (production of automotive parts for an IATF customer)
  • Customer-specific requirements of each OEM
  • Core-tool maturity (APQP, PPAP, FMEA, MSA, SPC)
  • Number of sites and remote support functions

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does IATF 16949 certification cost in Germany?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Germany these factors move both.

  • Number of sites and remote support locations
  • Headcount and product complexity
  • Certification body fees quoted separately from consulting

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

IATF 16949 consultants and certification bodies in Germany

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers IATF 16949 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Germany are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Germany

Certification is by a certification body approved by the IATF (an IATF-recognised certification body) under the IATF Rules; oversight for Germany runs through the VDA QMC IATF Oversight Office. This is an industry scheme, not DAkkS accreditation. No body is named here. Edition and transition details: IATF 16949 hub →

    Audit language

Audits are held in German or English; agree the language with the IATF-recognised certification body. Customer-specific requirements may set the language of records.

    Remote and on-site

Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; operational sites are normally visited on-site.

IATF 16949 in Germany: questions clients ask

Who oversees IATF 16949 certification in Germany?

The VDA QMC IATF Oversight Office. It witnesses IATF 16949 audits so that it can monitor the approved certification bodies, and oversight for Germany runs through it. The standard itself is published by the International Automotive Task Force, so the scheme rules come from the IATF, with the Oversight Office watching how bodies apply them.

Is IATF 16949 accredited by DAkkS?

No. IATF 16949 is an industry scheme, so certification bodies are approved under the IATF Rules as IATF-recognised bodies rather than accredited by DAkkS. When you choose a body, confirm its IATF recognition instead of looking for DAkkS accreditation, and ask for evidence of that recognition at the quotation stage.

Which German OEMs are IATF members?

BMW Group, Mercedes-Benz AG and Volkswagen Group, which VDA QMC lists among the OEM members of the IATF. Their membership is a market driver for any supplier working with them, since these customers work with the IATF 16949 scheme. Check each customer's own supplier requirements for the details that apply to you.

Do we need VDA 6.3 as well?

Possibly. Some customers request VDA 6.3 process audits in addition to IATF 16949, so the answer sits in the customer-specific requirements of each OEM or tier-1 buyer you supply. Read those requirements before you plan the audit programme, and ask the customer's supplier quality contact whether VDA 6.3 is expected alongside certification.
