In short

PCI DSS compliance in Denmark at a glance

In Denmark, PCI DSS is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

Card security reaches Danish merchants and payment firms through contracts rather than statute: acquirers and card brands require PCI DSS validation, either through a Report on Compliance by a Qualified Security Assessor or through a self-assessment, depending on volume and role. For regulated payment institutions, Finanstilsynet adds DORA, in direct application from 17 January 2025, with its own ICT risk, incident and third-party requirements. The PCI Security Standards Council runs the assessor programmes; no Danish body issues a PCI certificate and Sterling does not validate. Sterling's Enschede office scopes cardholder data flows, reduces scope where design allows, builds the controls and evidence and prepares you for the assessor, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included in the engagement and 20+ years of delivery experience behind the work.

The need

Who needs PCI DSS in Denmark, and what happens without it

These are the organisations in Denmark that most often need to show PCI DSS.

  • Danish e-commerce merchants and marketplacesCard acceptance brings validation duties set by the payment brands.
  • Payment institutions and fintech firmsFinanstilsynet applies DORA to payment and e-money institutions on top of card scheme rules.
  • Service providers that store, process or transmit card dataCustomers ask them for evidence from a Qualified Security Assessor or a self-assessment.
  • SaaS firms embedding payment flowsScope reduction through hosted payment pages is a common design question.

Requirements

PCI DSS requirements in Denmark

Strip away the vocabulary and PCI DSS asks any business that stores, processes or transmits card data to comply in six areas.

You know where card data livesThe cardholder data environment is scoped, data flows are mapped and the environment is segmented where possible.
Networks are protectedNetwork security controls restrict traffic to and from systems that handle card data, and configurations are hardened.
Stored data is minimised and protectedOnly the card data you need is kept, sensitive authentication data is not retained after authorisation except under issuer rules, and the rest is protected.
Access is restricted and authenticatedAccess to card data is limited to people who need it, with unique IDs and multi-factor authentication where required.
Systems are logged and testedActivity is logged and reviewed, vulnerabilities are scanned and patched, and penetration testing is carried out.
Policies and people keep it runningSecurity policies, staff awareness, vendor management and incident response keep controls working between assessments.

In Denmark these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: PCI DSS explained →

How Sterling gets a Danish company compliant with PCI DSS

Time

How long does PCI DSS compliance take in Denmark?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Denmark these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Cardholder data flows and system scope
  • Segmentation and existing controls
  • Validation level and assessor availability
  • Remediation lead times

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does PCI DSS compliance cost in Denmark?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and any external assessor’s fees, which are quoted separately. In Denmark these factors move both.

  • Systems, networks and locations in scope
  • Remediation tooling and segmentation
  • Assessor fees, quoted separately
  • Vulnerability scanning and penetration testing

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

PCI DSS consultants and assessors in Denmark

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; your regulators, customers and auditors then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers PCI DSS and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Denmark are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Denmark

Compliance, not certification: PCI DSS is validated through a Report on Compliance by a Qualified Security Assessor or through a self-assessment questionnaire, as the payment brands and acquirers require. Sterling prepares the scope, controls and evidence; it does not validate. Edition and transition details: PCI DSS hub →

    Audit language

Reports are usually written in English for acquirers and payment brands. Internal records can be in Danish or English; confirm any language requirement with your acquirer.

    Remote and on-site

Scoping and gap work can be remote or on-site; the assessor decides how much fieldwork is on-site.

PCI DSS in Denmark: questions clients ask

Does Danish law require PCI DSS?

No Danish instrument cited here requires it. PCI DSS is a payment industry standard, and the duty to validate comes from acquirers and card brands through contracts. Finanstilsynet's DORA page adds separate ICT risk duties for financial entities. Ask your acquirer which validation level and form it expects of you.

    Who validates PCI DSS compliance?

A Qualified Security Assessor, where the brands or your acquirer require a Report on Compliance, or yourselves through a self-assessment questionnaire at lower levels. The PCI Security Standards Council runs the assessor qualification programmes. No Danish accreditation body issues it, and Sterling prepares the evidence but cannot validate.

How does DORA relate to PCI DSS for Danish payment firms?

They are separate. Finanstilsynet says DORA applies directly to covered financial entities from 17 January 2025, covering ICT risk management, incident reporting, resilience testing and third-party risk. PCI DSS is a card industry control set. Many firms map one to the other; neither replaces the other.

Can PCI DSS evidence support GDPR security duties?

Partly. Datatilsynet's catalogue of measures shows the safeguards it expects for personal data, and many PCI controls on access, logging and encryption overlap with them. Card data is only part of the personal data a business holds, so PCI evidence does not close the GDPR assessment. Counsel can advise.
