ISO 42001 certification in Denmark at a glance
Act No. 502 of 23 May 2018 supplementing the GDPR (databeskyttelsesloven, the Data Protection Act) is the instrument itself: it applies to the organisations within its scope, and buyers and partners in Denmark ask for evidence that you meet it.
Artificial intelligence governance in Denmark has a named public coordinator: Digitaliseringsstyrelsen describes itself as the national coordinating supervisory authority for the EU AI Regulation, while Datatilsynet continues to supervise personal data processing, including in AI systems, under the GDPR and Act No. 502 of 23 May 2018. Neither source names ISO/IEC 42001, so certification is a voluntary way to show structured governance to customers, authorities and partners, particularly for software providers, life sciences firms and public-sector suppliers. It is carried out by a certification body accredited by DANAK or an equivalent accreditation body, never by Sterling. Sterling's Enschede office inventories your AI systems, builds risk assessment, data governance and oversight controls and prepares the audit, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement.
Who needs ISO 42001 in Denmark, and what happens without it
In Denmark the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Danish providers of AI-enabled softwareThe EU AI Regulation has a national coordinating authority in Digitaliseringsstyrelsen, and customers ask for governance evidence.
- Organisations deploying AI in HR, credit and public servicesDeployers carry duties the Agency's guidance describes for higher-risk uses.
- Life sciences and health-technology firms using AIRegulated products and personal data raise governance expectations.
- Processors using AI on personal dataThe GDPR and Datatilsynet's supervision still apply to AI processing.
- Public authorities and their suppliersDigitaliseringsstyrelsen publishes guides on the use of AI.

Take the ISO/IEC 42001 readiness checkISO 42001 requirements in Denmark
Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 42001 requires a company to prove six things about how it governs the AI it builds or uses.
In Denmark these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 42001 explained →

How long does ISO 42001 certification take in Denmark?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Denmark these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Inventory of AI systems and their risk uses
- Existing ISO/IEC 27001 or quality system
- Data governance and model lifecycle controls
- Certification body scheduling
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 42001 certification cost in Denmark?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Denmark these factors move both.
- Number of AI systems and use cases in scope
- Impact assessment and control remediation
- Certification body audit fees, quoted separately
- Tooling for monitoring and records
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 42001 consultants and certification bodies in Denmark
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 42001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Denmark are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Denmark
Choose a certification body accredited for this standard by DANAK, Denmark's national accreditation body, or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). Check that the body's accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 42001 hub →
Audit language
Danish is the official language and English is widely used in business. Agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and follow any language requirement in a contract or a regulator's procedure.
Remote and on-site
Audits are normally on-site with some remote review of AI system documentation and tooling.
ISO 42001 in Denmark: questions clients ask
Who supervises the EU AI Regulation in Denmark?
Digitaliseringsstyrelsen describes itself as the national coordinating supervisory authority for the AI Regulation and says it coordinates supervision of the EU rules on artificial intelligence. The agency says its pages will be updated as more guidance is produced. Check them for the current position, and take advice from counsel for your own system.
Does ISO/IEC 42001 make us compliant with the AI Regulation?
No. The agency's page does not name the standard, and a management-system certificate is not a conformity assessment under the Regulation. ISO/IEC 42001 gives a governance structure for inventory, risk assessment, data management and oversight, which supports compliance work. Ask Digitaliseringsstyrelsen or your counsel which obligations apply.
Does the GDPR still apply to AI systems in Denmark?
Yes. The Data Protection Act supplements the GDPR for processing by establishments in Denmark and for non-EU controllers serving people there, and Datatilsynet supervises it. Training or running AI on personal data therefore needs the usual lawful basis, notices and security. Counsel can advise on your use case.
Who issues ISO/IEC 42001 certificates in Denmark?
Independent certification bodies, with accreditation from DANAK or an equivalent body whose scope names this standard. Because it is a newer standard, verify the scope rather than assume it. EA records DANAK's general management system certification scope. Sterling prepares the AI management system and does not certify.
