ISO 42001 certification in Bangladesh at a glance
In Bangladesh, ISO/IEC 42001 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
AI governance in Bangladeshi business is still a matter of customer expectation and good practice, because the 2026 Acts on data and cyber security do not regulate AI as such. The Personal Data Protection Act, 2026 does define profiling, which brings automated assessment of customers or staff within its duties, and Bangladesh Bank's guideline shapes how financial institutions run technology. ISO 42001 offers a certifiable management system for AI: an inventory of systems, impact assessment, data governance, testing, monitoring and incident handling. It is new, so check that any certification body holds accreditation for it. Software firms, banks and lenders, BPO and analytics operators are the first to ask. Sterling's Mumbai office helps clients build the inventory, assessments and governance roles, with Effivity software and Sterling Academy training included with the engagement.
Who needs ISO 42001 in Bangladesh, and what happens without it
In Bangladesh the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Software and IT-enabled services firms building or using AI featuresCustomers ask how AI systems are governed, tested and monitored.
- Banks, lenders and mobile financial services using scoring or fraud modelsAutomated decisions about people carry data protection duties and reputational risk.
- Operators that profile customers or staffThe data law defines profiling, so automated assessment of people has to respect its rules.
- BPO and analytics firms processing client data with AI toolsClients set conditions on how their data is used in models.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 42001 requires a company to prove six things about how it governs the AI it builds or uses.
In Bangladesh these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 42001 explained →

How long does ISO 42001 certification take in Bangladesh?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Bangladesh these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Inventory of AI systems and their intended uses
- Impact assessment, data governance and testing records
- Roles for oversight, transparency and incident handling
- Certification body readiness for this standard
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 42001 certification cost in Bangladesh?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Bangladesh these factors move both.
- Number of AI systems and use cases in scope
- Data governance, testing and monitoring tooling
- Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
- Training for developers and business owners
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 42001 consultants and certification bodies in Bangladesh
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 42001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Bangladesh are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.
Laws and regulations that drive ISO 42001 in Bangladesh (3)
| Instrument | How it treats the standard |
|---|---|
| Personal Data Protection Act, 2026 (Act No. 63 of 2026) | Context Defines profiling as automated processing of personal data that evaluates aspects such as performance at work, economic situation, health, preferences, behaviour or location; the Act is not an AI law and names no AI standard. |
| Cyber Security Act, 2026 (Act No. 81 of 2026) | Context Security of digital systems and critical information infrastructure; the Act does not address AI governance. |
| Bangladesh Accreditation Board | Accreditation The national accreditation body; confirm the certification body's scope covers AI management systems. |
Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Bangladesh
Choose a certification body whose accreditation covers this standard and your sector: accreditation by the Bangladesh Accreditation Board (BAB) or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). Ask for the accreditation certificate and read its scope. AI management system certification is new, so ask the certification body about its accreditation for this standard and how many audits it has completed. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 42001 hub →
Audit language
Buyer standards, export documents and most management system records are in English, and Bangla is the state language under the Constitution; interviews with workers and supervisors are normally in Bangla. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
Audits combine remote reviews of design, data and testing records with on-site interviews of the teams that build and oversee the systems.
ISO 42001 in Bangladesh: questions clients ask
Does Bangladesh have an AI law that ISO 42001 supports?
The Laws of Bangladesh portal does not list a dedicated AI statute among the 2026 Acts reviewed here. The Personal Data Protection Act, 2026 does define profiling, so automated assessment of people must respect it. ISO 42001 is voluntary and a way to show governance to customers. Ask counsel what applies to you.
How does the data law touch automated decisions about people?
It defines profiling as automated processing of personal data that evaluates matters like work performance, economic situation, health, preferences, reliability, behaviour, location or movements. Where a model does that, the Act's duties on lawful processing and rights apply. Take legal advice on how the provisions apply to your models.
Is ISO 42001 certification widely available yet?
It is a recent standard, so fewer certification bodies hold accreditation for it than for older schemes. Ask each candidate for its accreditation certificate and scope, and how many audits it has completed. Check whether your customers accept certification or only want evidence of AI governance practices.
Who should own an AI management system?
A cross-functional group: product or engineering leaders, data protection, security and the business owners of each use case. The standard expects clear roles for oversight, impact assessment and incident handling. Name an accountable executive early, and start with an inventory of the AI systems in use.
