ISO 27701 certification in Bangladesh at a glance
In Bangladesh, ISO/IEC 27701 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
Bangladesh now has a personal data law. The Personal Data Protection Act, 2026 treats personal data as the individual's own, requires lawful processing with consent, gives data subjects rights, sets duties on data-fiduciaries and processors and names the National Data Management Authority as its regulator; most sections are deemed in effect from November 2025 and a few await a notified date. It creates no certificate, so ISO 27701 is a voluntary way to run and evidence a privacy management system, built on ISO 27001 and audited by an accredited certification body. BPO and IT firms serving overseas clients, banks and mobile financial services, and healthcare and e-commerce operators are the natural candidates. Sterling's Mumbai office helps with data inventories, records of processing, processor contracts, rights handling and breach routines, with Effivity software and Sterling Academy training included with the engagement. Confirm legal duties with counsel.
Who needs ISO 27701 in Bangladesh, and what happens without it
In Bangladesh the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Controllers and processors holding customer or employee dataThe Personal Data Protection Act, 2026 sets duties on lawful processing, rights and security for data-fiduciaries and processors.
- BPO and IT firms processing personal data for overseas clientsClients ask suppliers to show a privacy management system alongside information security.
- Banks, lenders and mobile financial servicesFinancial data is a defined category in the Act, and institutions already work under Bangladesh Bank's ICT guideline.
- Healthcare, education and e-commerce operatorsThey collect large volumes of personal data and need records of processing, consent and retention.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 27701 requires a company to prove six things about how it handles personal data.
In Bangladesh these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 27701 explained →

How long does ISO 27701 certification take in Bangladesh?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Bangladesh these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Data inventory and records of processing
- Roles of controller and processor and the contracts that define them
- Handling of data subject requests, consent and breaches
- Certification body scheduling alongside ISO 27001
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 27701 certification cost in Bangladesh?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Bangladesh these factors move both.
- Volume and sensitivity of personal data
- Number of systems and processors in scope
- Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
- Privacy tooling and training
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 27701 consultants and certification bodies in Bangladesh
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 27701 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Bangladesh are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Bangladesh
Choose a certification body whose accreditation covers this standard and your sector: accreditation by the Bangladesh Accreditation Board (BAB) or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). Ask for the accreditation certificate and read its scope. ISO 27701 builds on an information security management system, so most certification bodies audit it with ISO 27001. Audit language
Buyer standards, export documents and most management system records are in English, and Bangla is the state language under the Constitution; interviews with workers and supervisors are normally in Bangla. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
Audits combine remote document and system reviews with on-site visits; interviews cover privacy, legal and operations staff.
ISO 27701 in Bangladesh: questions clients ask
Does the Personal Data Protection Act, 2026 require ISO 27701?
No. The Act sets duties and creates no certificate, and ISO 27701 does not equal legal compliance. It gives you a privacy management system that can evidence many of those duties. Most sections are deemed in effect from 6 November 2025, so confirm timing and obligations with counsel.
Who regulates personal data in Bangladesh?
The Personal Data Protection Act, 2026 names the National Data Management Authority, established under section 8 of the National Data Management Act, 2026, as its authority. Check the Authority's published regulations as they appear, and ask counsel how its powers affect your processing and any transfers.
Can ISO 27701 be certified without ISO 27001?
It is an extension of an information security management system, so certification bodies usually expect ISO 27001 or an equivalent base to be in place and audit the two together. Plan both in one project if you hold neither, and ask your certification body how it treats the combined scope.
Does the Act apply to a Bangladeshi firm serving overseas clients?
It applies to anyone processing personal data inside Bangladesh, and it reaches processing abroad linked to goods or services offered to, or monitoring of, people in Bangladesh. A BPO processing foreign clients' data from Dhaka is therefore within its territorial reach. Take advice on how it interacts with client contracts and foreign laws.
