In short

ISO 50001 certification in Austria at a glance

Bundes-Energieeffizienzgesetz (EEffG), BGBl. I Nr. 72/2014, section on Energieaudits und Managementsysteme bei Unternehmen is the instrument itself: it applies to the organisations within its scope, and buyers and partners in Austria ask for evidence that you meet it.

Energy management in Austria has a statutory hook in the EEffG. Firms based in Austria that are large, or cross the Act's thresholds, must either commission an energy audit or run a recognised management system, and an energy system certified by an accredited body is one such route; ownership groups are counted together. Public buyers add a procurement angle under the Bundesvergabegesetz 2018. Accreditation for ISO 50001 certification bodies comes from Akkreditierung Austria or a recognised equivalent, and Sterling never issues the certificate. Manufacturers with significant energy uses gain most, because the energy review, baseline and indicators show where savings sit. Sterling's Frankfurt office builds the review, metering plan, controls and internal audit, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement. Austrian-specific questions follow.

The need

Who needs ISO 50001 in Austria, and what happens without it

In Austria the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Large companies and those above the EEffG thresholdsThe Bundes-Energieeffizienzgesetz requires an energy audit or a recognised management system, and a certified energy management system is one recognised route.
  • Energy-intensive manufacturersProcess heat, compressed air and electrical loads give measurable savings that the management system tracks.
  • Companies in groups counted togetherThe Act adds up companies in an ownership group, so subsidiaries can be caught by the group's size.
  • Suppliers asked for energy performance evidenceCustomers and public buyers increasingly ask suppliers about energy and environmental management.

ISO 50001 requirements in Austria

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 50001 requires a company to prove six things about how it manages and improves energy performance.

You know where the energy goesAn energy review shows how energy is used and consumed and identifies the areas of significant energy use.
Baselines and indicators are setEnergy performance is measured against a baseline using indicators that suit your operations.
Leadership commits to improvementTop management sets an energy policy, objectives and targets, and appoints a team with authority to act.
Significant uses are controlledOperation, maintenance and design affecting significant energy uses follow defined criteria, and energy is considered in purchasing.
Data is collected and checkedEnergy data is planned, measured and analysed so that improvement can be demonstrated rather than assumed.
Performance actually improvesAction plans are delivered, results are evaluated, and the system is audited and reviewed so energy performance keeps improving.

In Austria these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 50001 explained →

How Sterling gets an Austrian company certified

One team from the Frankfurt office carries the work from scoping to certificate. Clients in Austria are served from Sterling's Frankfurt office, on-site where the work needs it and remotely otherwise.

  1. Discovery call and scopeEntities, locations, regulators and target date, agreed before any proposal.
  2. Gap assessment against ISO 50001 and the Austrian requirements that apply to youControls you already run for your regulators and customers are reused, not rebuilt.
  3. Your system built with your team in EffivityRisks, controls, evidence, incidents and reviews in one live system the auditor can see.
  4. Internal audit, management review and corrective actionsYour internal auditors trained by Sterling; the evidence proven before the certification body arrives.

Time

How long does ISO 50001 certification take in Austria?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Austria these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Number of sites and significant energy uses
  • Metering and baseline data quality
  • State of legal and EEffG reporting
  • Certification body scheduling

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 50001 certification cost in Austria?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Austria these factors move both.

  • Energy use profile and number of sites
  • Metering and monitoring investment
  • Certification body audit fees, quoted separately
  • Integration with ISO 14001

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 50001 consultants and certification bodies in Austria

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 50001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Austria are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 50001 in Austria (4)

    InstrumentHow it treats the standard
Bundes-Energieeffizienzgesetz (EEffG), BGBl. I Nr. 72/2014, section on Energieaudits und Managementsysteme bei UnternehmenThe instrument itself
For an obligated company, a certified energy management system built on recognised standards is one of the routes the Act accepts in place of a stand-alone energy audit; certified environmental systems and EMAS validation are the other system routes.
Bundesvergabegesetz 2018 (BVergG 2018), BGBl. I Nr. 65/2018, section on Normen für Qualitätssicherung und UmweltmanagementThe instrument itself
Where a public buyer demands third-party proof, the Act points to systems certified by accredited bodies against the relevant European standards; energy performance can feature in such award criteria, although ISO 50001 is not named.
Akkreditierung Austria as the Austrian national accreditation bodyRegulator page
Akkreditierung Austria, a department of the economy ministry, accredits conformity assessment bodies set up in Austria, including those certifying energy management systems.
EA directory entry for Akkreditierung AustriaRecognition
Akkreditierung Austria is an EA MLA signatory, and management system certification is among its listed scopes, so its accreditations are recognised across Europe.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Austria

For energy management, look for a certification body whose accreditation names ISO 50001, granted by Akkreditierung Austria or by another accreditation body in the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). Because the EEffG refers to a system certified by an accredited body, keep the accreditation certificate with your EEffG records. Edition and transition details: ISO 50001 hub →

    Audit language

Audits of Austrian sites usually run in German, while international groups often use English for energy data and reports. Settle the audit language, and the language of the energy review and controlled documents, with the certification body when you apply.

    Remote and on-site

Audits are normally on-site because they examine energy use, metering and operations; remote sampling is at the certification body's discretion.

ISO 50001 in Austria: questions clients ask

Is ISO 50001 mandatory for large Austrian companies?

Not strictly, because an audit is the alternative. The EEffG gives obligated firms a choice between an energy audit and a recognised management system. A system certified by an accredited body on recognised standards qualifies, and so do certified environmental systems and EMAS. E-Control or your counsel can say whether your firm is obligated.

How do group companies count under the EEffG?

Companies more than half owned by another, or holding more than half of others, are added together across the group, and the Act treats dominant influence in the same way. A subsidiary can therefore fall under the duty because of group size. Work out your position with counsel or E-Control.

Who certifies an energy management system in Austria?

An accredited certification body, never Sterling. The Act itself refers to a system certified by an accredited body, so check that your body is accredited for ISO 50001 by Akkreditierung Austria or an equivalent body. Sterling prepares the energy review, baseline, indicators and internal audit.

Does ISO 50001 help in public tenders?

Possibly, though the Bundesvergabegesetz 2018 mentions environmental management rather than energy management by name. It tells authorities asking for proof to refer to EMAS or to standards certified by accredited bodies. Each tender sets its own criteria, so read the documents and ask the authority.
