In short

AS9100 certification in Austria at a glance

In Austria, AS9100 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

Aerospace work reaches Austrian suppliers through contracts, not statutes. Austria's investment agency lists aviation alongside automotive and rail in its mobility focus, and precision manufacturers, electronics firms and engineering suppliers that join those chains are asked for an aerospace quality system on top of ISO 9001. AS9100 certificates are issued by certification bodies working under the scheme's own rules, with accreditation from Akkreditierung Austria or an equivalent body underneath, never by Sterling. Customers add flow-down requirements, so the gap analysis has to read their supplier manuals as well as the standard. Sterling's Frankfurt office builds on your ISO 9001 system, adds configuration, risk and product-safety controls, and rehearses the internal audit, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement.

The need

Who needs AS9100 in Austria, and what happens without it

In Austria the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Aerospace and aviation suppliersAustria's investment agency lists aviation inside its mobility focus, and aerospace primes set quality-system requirements in supplier contracts.
  • Precision manufacturers and electronics firmsFirms in advanced manufacturing, sensors and microelectronics enter aerospace chains and are asked for an aerospace quality system on top of ISO 9001.
  • Engineering, testing and software suppliersDesign, test and embedded-software work for aerospace customers falls under the same contractual quality expectations.
  • Existing ISO 9001 holdersAn existing quality management system is the base on which the aerospace requirements are layered, shortening the gap analysis.

AS9100 requirements in Austria

Strip away the vocabulary and AS9100 asks a supplier to prove six things about delivering aerospace products safely and on time.

Product safety is managedRisks to product safety are identified and controlled throughout the product's life, from design to delivery.
Configuration is under controlThe approved configuration of each product is identified, changes are controlled and records match what was delivered.
Counterfeit parts are kept outPurchasing, inspection and supplier controls stop counterfeit or suspect parts from entering the product.
Operational risks are managedRisks to delivery and product conformity are assessed and controlled during planning and production.
Production is proven before it runsProduction process verification, such as first article inspection, confirms that processes can make conforming product.
Delivery and conformity are measuredOn-time delivery and product conformity are measured, and human factors are considered when nonconformities are investigated.

In Austria these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: AS9100 explained →

How Sterling gets an Austrian company certified

How to get AS9100 certified in Austria

One team from the Frankfurt office carries the work from scoping to certificate. Clients in Austria are served from Sterling's Frankfurt office, on-site where the work needs it and remotely otherwise.

    1. Discovery call and scopeEntities, locations, regulators and target date, agreed before any proposal.
    2. Gap assessment against AS9100 and the Austrian requirements that apply to youControls you already run for your regulators and customers are reused, not rebuilt.
    3. Your system built with your team in EffivityRisks, controls, evidence, incidents and reviews in one live system the auditor can see.
    4. Internal audit, management review and corrective actionsYour internal auditors trained by Sterling; the evidence proven before the certification body arrives.
    5. Certification body stage 1 and stage 2, then surveillanceAn accredited body audits and decides. Sterling supports the audits and the three-year cycle.
    Included in every engagement
    • End to end, from one team
    • Effivity ISO & GRC software
    • Preferential Sterling Academy access, with complimentary awareness training for your people
    • Internal auditor training for your audit team, as applicable to your standard
    • Vulnerability assessment on ISMS engagements

The Sterling Promise: 100% on-time completion, 100% success, 8,100+ client engagements.Sterling does not certify. Certification decisions stay with independent bodies.

      Time

How long does AS9100 certification take in Austria?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Austria these are the factors that set the timeline.

      • Customer flow-down requirements and approvals
      • Configuration management, first article inspection and counterfeit-part controls
      • Number of sites and special processes
      • Certification body scheduling under the scheme rules

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

      Cost

How much does AS9100 certification cost in Austria?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Austria these factors move both.

      • Scope and number of sites
      • Remediation of traceability, risk and product-safety controls
      • Certification body audit fees, quoted separately from consulting
      • Internal auditor training on aerospace requirements

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

        Choosing a partner

AS9100 consultants and certification bodies in Austria

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

        • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers AS9100 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
        • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Austria are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
        • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
        • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive AS9100 in Austria (4)

          InstrumentHow it treats the standard
Invest in Austria industry focusMarket driver
The Austrian Business Agency's investment site lists life sciences, mobility (automotive, rail and aviation), microelectronics, green tech, deep tech including cybersecurity and artificial intelligence, and advanced manufacturing as its industry focus.
Akkreditierung Austria as the Austrian national accreditation bodyRegulator page
The Federal Minister for Economy set up Akkreditierung Austria as a department of the ministry; it accredits conformity assessment bodies established in Austria.
EA directory entry for Akkreditierung AustriaRecognition
EA lists Akkreditierung Austria as an MLA signatory with scopes that include management system certification, product certification, certification of persons, inspection, calibration, testing and validation and verification.
Austrian Standards as the national standards organisationScheme rule
Austrian Standards describes itself as the Austrian organisation for standardization and innovation, so it is named here only in its standards role.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Austria

Certificates are issued by certification bodies, not by Sterling. Aerospace customers set the requirement in their contracts and the scheme's own rules decide which certification bodies may issue AS9100 certificates, so confirm those rules with your customer and the body. Check the body's accreditation, from Akkreditierung Austria or another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA), and its scope. No body is named here. Edition and transition details: AS9100 hub →

          Audit language

German is the official language of Austria and English is common in international groups and technology firms. Agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and follow any language requirement in a contract or a regulator's procedure.

          Remote and on-site

Audits are on-site because they examine production, configuration control and product safety; any remote element follows the scheme rules and the certification body's practice.

AS9100 in Austria: questions clients ask

Is AS9100 a legal requirement for Austrian aerospace suppliers?

No statute demands it. Aerospace customers write the requirement into purchase terms and supplier approval, and Austria's investment agency lists aviation among the mobility industries it promotes. Because each customer decides which version and which extra requirements apply, ask for its supplier quality manual before you plan the project.

How does AS9100 relate to ISO 9001 for an Austrian plant?

AS9100 starts from ISO 9001 and adds aerospace-specific controls such as configuration management, risk handling, product safety and counterfeit-part prevention. An existing ISO 9001 system therefore shortens the gap analysis, but it does not satisfy the extra requirements. Sterling's Frankfurt office finds the gaps and builds the missing controls.

Which accreditation should an AS9100 certification body hold?

That is set by the scheme and your customers, so ask both. In general, look for accreditation from Akkreditierung Austria or an equivalent body for the management system scope, and check the body's authorisation under the aerospace scheme rules. EA lists Akkreditierung Austria as an MLA signatory for management system certification, which covers the accreditation side only.

Who certifies AS9100 and what does Sterling do?

An authorised, accredited certification body issues the certificate; Sterling does not. Sterling prepares the management system from its Frankfurt office, on-site where the work needs it and remotely otherwise, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included. The preparation covers gap analysis, procedures, internal audits and readiness for the certification body's stage audits.
