JCI accreditation · Joint Commission International hospital standards

JCI accreditation consultants for hospitals that want the survey to confirm how they already work.

Joint Commission International accredits hospitals and other healthcare organisations against its own standards, after an on-site survey by its surveyors. Sterling's expert and experienced consultants prepare your hospital for that survey: the gaps against the current standards manual found and closed, policies that match practice, staff who know their part and mock surveys that leave no surprises, in 60+ countries. We ensure successful accreditation for our clients.

  • Fixed scope, one proposal: consulting, Effivity software, Sterling Academy access and internal auditor training, as applicable to your standard, in one proposal
  • A team of expert and experienced healthcare quality consultants, supporting hospitals and care providers across countries since 2003
  • The Sterling Promise: 100% on-time completion, 100% success, 8,100+ client engagements. Sterling does not accredit; JCI surveys the hospital and decides

What it is

What is JCI accreditation and what is it used for?

JCI accreditation is an international recognition granted by Joint Commission International, which sets its own healthcare standards and runs accreditation programmes against them. Its Hospital Accreditation Program covers general and specialist hospitals, and a separate Academic Medical Center Accreditation Program covers hospitals that also teach and carry out research. A hospital is accredited when JCI's surveyors have visited, seen how care is delivered and JCI has decided that the standards are met.

Hospitals pursue it to show patients, referring doctors, insurers and partners that their care and safety practice has been examined by an independent international body. For many it also gives the organisation one shared discipline: written expectations, trained staff, measured results and a habit of improving on what the data shows. JCI's standards include the International Patient Safety Goals, a named set that sits at the centre of most readiness work.

Current edition. The standards manual in use for hospitals is the Joint Commission International Standards for Hospitals, 8th Edition, which JCI published in 2024 for hospitals and academic medical centres, alongside the Survey Process Guide for Hospitals, 8th Edition. Your hospital obtains the manual from JCI, and every piece of readiness work is set against the edition JCI will apply at your survey. If your organisation serves patients mainly in India, compare this page with our NABH accreditation page before you decide.

Who it is for

Who needs JCI accreditation?

JCI accreditation is voluntary, and hospitals choose it for a reason in front of them. Most come to Sterling for readiness support from one of four directions:

  • Patients and partners from abroad expect it. Hospitals that receive international patients, or work with overseas insurers and facilitators, are often asked whether they hold JCI accreditation. Ask the partner which programme it recognises before you set the scope.
  • A tender, payer or partnership names it. Some contracts for clinical services, insurance panels or hospital partnerships list international accreditation as a condition or give it weight in scoring.
  • A health authority or regulator gives it weight. In some countries, authorities and national schemes take international accreditation into account. What your own authority accepts is something to confirm with it directly.
  • A group wants one standard across its hospitals. A hospital network or investor-owned group wants every facility working to the same expectations, with shared policies, shared measures and one approach to patient safety.

A survey looks at how the hospital runs on the days the surveyors are present, and the standards expect that practice to hold on every other day too. The lasting gain is safer, more consistent care, not the plaque in reception.

Requirements

What do JCI accreditation requirements cover?

The requirements are set out in the JCI standards manual that your hospital obtains from JCI, and the survey tests your hospital against the standards that apply to its services. The list below is Sterling's plain-language grouping of the readiness work, not JCI's chapter structure. The gap assessment itself follows the current manual, standard by standard.

  • Scope and programme: the hospital or academic medical centre programme, the services, buildings and sites the survey will cover.
  • International Patient Safety Goals: JCI's named set of safety goals, checked against how care is actually delivered on the wards and in theatres.
  • Policies, procedures and plans: written where the standards expect them, approved, current and followed by the people they describe.
  • Leadership and accountability: clear ownership of quality and patient safety from the board to each department.
  • Staff training and competence: orientation, ongoing training and competence records for clinical and support staff.
  • Measurement and improvement data: indicators collected, analysed and acted on, with improvement projects you can show.
  • Safe environment: evidence that facilities, equipment and emergency arrangements are managed and tested.
  • Survey readiness: staff who can explain their work, records that can be found and a hospital that has rehearsed the survey.

What does useful JCI survey evidence look like?

Policies your nurses and doctors can find and describe, training and competence records that match the staff roster, safety practices surveyors can watch being done at the bedside, indicator data with trends and decisions attached, and mock survey findings that were closed with proof. We help your team build exactly this evidence, and keep the documents, audits and actions in Effivity so they are current whenever surveyors ask.

Accreditation process

How do you get JCI accreditation?

Prepare a hospital that already works to the standards, then invite JCI to survey it. Sterling handles the readiness; the survey and the accreditation decision belong to Joint Commission International.

  1. 01
Confirm the programme and obtain the manual.Choose the hospital or academic medical centre programme, agree the services and sites in scope, and obtain the current standards manual and survey guide from JCI.
  2. 02
Gap assessment against the current standards.Review each department against the applicable standards, keep what already works and agree actions, owners and dates for the rest.
  3. 03
Close the gaps.Write or revise policies, train staff, put the patient safety practices into daily routine and start collecting the measures the hospital will be asked to show.
  4. 04
Run tracer-style mock surveys.Follow individual patients' care through the hospital, interview staff where they work, test the records and close every finding with evidence before the real visit.
  5. 05
Apply, host the survey and respond.Complete JCI's application steps, host its surveyors, address any findings in the way and time JCI requires and await its decision; then keep the hospital ready for renewal.

Check the route before you sign anything. Only Joint Commission International grants JCI accreditation; no consultant or certification body can issue it on JCI's behalf. JCI publishes its own pathway to accreditation and its accreditation policies on jointcommissioninternational.org, and a hospital's status can be confirmed with JCI.

Cost

How much does JCI accreditation readiness cost?

What a readiness programme costs depends mostly on how much of the evidence already exists. A single-site hospital with an established quality department needs a lighter programme than a multi-site group writing its policies for the first time. Every Sterling proposal lists each component, and nothing is added later.

Cost componentWhat affects it
Consulting and readinessServices, beds and sites in scope, the gaps the assessment finds, the number of mock surveys, and whether you choose Design™ or Drive™
JCI feesSet by Joint Commission International for its programme and your survey; paid to JCI, not to Sterling
Facility and equipment workAny building, safety or equipment improvements the gap assessment shows are needed
Internal resourcesTime from hospital leadership, the quality team, department heads and clinical staff for policies, training and mock surveys
Software and learningIncluded in a Sterling engagement: Effivity for documents, audits and actions, and Sterling Academy access for your people

What moves the price

  • The number of services, departments and sites in scope
  • How many policies need writing rather than revising
  • Whether indicator data is already collected and reviewed
  • The target survey date and your staff's available time

What a Sterling proposal always shows

  • Deliverables, assumptions and exclusions in writing
  • JCI fees kept apart from our fee
  • Milestones tied to deliverables
  • One all-inclusive proposal for our work

Timeline

How long does JCI accreditation take?

The pace is set by three things: how deep the gaps are, how much time clinical and support staff can give alongside patient care, and the survey date agreed with JCI. As an estimate, a first JCI accreditation typically takes twelve to twenty-four months from gap assessment to decision; a hospital with a mature quality programme moves faster.

PhaseWhat sets the pace
Scope and gap assessmentAccess to department heads, existing policies and quality data
Closing the gapsPolicy writing and approval, staff training and any facility work
Operating historyMeasures and safety practices running long enough to show results

Your engagement

What your JCI readiness engagement includes

Sterling OS™ runs every engagement, and each phase takes a hospital shape. Sterling does not accredit or survey hospitals: Joint Commission International surveys your hospital and makes the accreditation decision.

  • Design™: guided support

Your quality team and department heads close the gaps themselves; a Sterling consultant sets the method, reviews each policy and record, and leads the mock surveys.

  • Drive™: managed support

The alternative to Design™ for stretched hospitals: Sterling drafts policies, plans and records with your departments and runs the readiness programme to the survey.

  • Sustain™: after accreditation

Periodic mock surveys, internal audits, review of standards updates and preparation for renewal.

  • Automate™: Effivity

Your policies, audits and actions run in Effivity, included with the engagement at no additional cost.

  • Training for your people

Internal auditor training, as applicable to your standard, and preferential Sterling Academy access, including complimentary awareness training for your people as part of the engagement.

Accreditation decisions remain with Joint Commission International.

How Sterling implements ISO and GRC standards

Effivity · ISO and GRC software, included in every engagement

How Effivity helps you fulfil, automate and simplify JCI accreditation requirements.

Every Sterling JCI readiness engagement includes Effivity, the ISO and GRC automation platform built by the Sterling group and used in 50+ countries. Your consultant sets up the workspace within the agreed scope, so policies, audits, mock survey findings, incidents raised as nonconformities, complaints, training and equipment records sit in one place and stay current between surveys. Sterling consulting clients get their Effivity subscription included with the engagement, at no additional cost.

What this means on survey day

When a surveyor asks for a policy, a training record or the latest indicator review, your team opens it on screen with its date, owner and evidence attached. After accreditation, Sustain™ runs in the same workspace, so the renewal survey finds records that have been kept up all along.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about JCI accreditation

Is JCI accreditation the same as ISO 9001 certification?

No. JCI accreditation is granted by Joint Commission International against its own healthcare standards, after its own survey. ISO 9001 certification is issued by an independent certification body against the international quality management standard. Some hospitals hold both, and the quality system behind one supports the other.

Should a hospital in India choose JCI or NABH accreditation?

It depends on who is asking for it. NABH is India's national accreditation board for hospitals and healthcare providers, while JCI is an international accreditor; hospitals serving mainly domestic patients and schemes often start with NABH, and those attracting international patients and partners often add JCI. Our NABH page covers that route.

Which JCI standards manual should we prepare against?

The edition JCI will apply at your survey, which for hospitals is currently the 8th edition. Obtain the standards manual and the Survey Process Guide from JCI directly, and confirm with JCI which edition applies to your survey date before the gap assessment starts.

Can clinics, laboratories or other care providers get JCI accreditation?

Yes. Besides hospitals and academic medical centres, JCI runs accreditation programmes for laboratories, ambulatory care, primary care centres, long-term care, medical transport and home care. Each programme has its own standards, so the readiness work follows the manual for your type of organisation.

Does Sterling accredit hospitals or carry out JCI surveys?

No. Sterling prepares hospitals for the survey. Only Joint Commission International grants JCI accreditation, and its own surveyors carry out the survey.
