ISO 3834 · Quality requirements for fusion welding of metallic materials
ISO 3834 certification and requirements for welding quality your customers can trust.
Fabricators of pressure equipment, structures, machinery and vessels are asked to prove that welding is controlled before a single joint is inspected. Sterling's expert and experienced consultants set up welding coordination, procedures and records with your workshop, then support you through the certification body's audit. We ensure successful certification for our clients.
- Fixed scope, one proposal: consulting, Effivity software, Sterling Academy access and internal auditor training, as applicable to your standard, in one proposal
- A team of expert and experienced welding quality consultants, with management system consulting across sectors and countries since 2003
- The Sterling Promise: 100% on-time completion, 100% success, 8,100+ client engagements. Sterling does not certify; an independent certification body audits and decides
8,100+ client engagements in 60+ countries.
Why fabricators choose SterlingWhat it is
What is ISO 3834 and what is it used for?
ISO 3834 is the ISO series "Quality requirements for fusion welding of metallic materials". Welding is a special process: the quality of a joint cannot be fully confirmed by inspection afterwards, so it has to be controlled while it is made. ISO 3834 sets out what a manufacturer needs in place to do that, and offers levels of requirements so the controls match the work.
ISO describes Part 2 as comprehensive quality requirements for fusion welding, both in workshops and at field installation sites. Customers and product standards use the series to state the level of welding control they expect from a supplier. Railway work has its own sector series, EN 15085, which we cover on a separate page.
Current edition. ISO lists ISO 3834-2:2021 as the third edition, published in April 2021, alongside ISO 3834-1:2021, ISO 3834-3:2021 and ISO 3834-5:2021. Confirm which part and edition your customer or product standard calls for before you start.
Who it is for
Who needs ISO 3834 certification?
Any business whose welded products carry load, pressure or safety risk is likely to be asked. Typical starting points:
- A customer specifies a requirement level. The order or supplier questionnaire names ISO 3834-2 or ISO 3834-3, and your certificate must match.
- A product standard points to it. Structural, pressure or machinery work references ISO 3834 for welding quality.
- You are bidding for international projects. Main contractors screen fabricators on welding control before technical evaluation.
- Your workshop has grown. More welders, processes and materials have outgrown informal control.
The benefit is fewer repairs and rejections and evidence that welding is under control, not the certificate alone.
Requirements
What are the main ISO 3834 requirements?
ISO publishes the series in parts; the list below follows the part titles ISO shows. Within the chosen part, Sterling's work covers welding coordination, personnel, procedures, inspection and records; the detailed requirements are checked against the applicable edition during the programme.
- Part 1: criteria for selecting the appropriate level of quality requirements.
- Part 2: comprehensive quality requirements.
- Part 3: standard quality requirements.
- Part 4: a further level of requirements, referenced by ISO alongside Parts 2 and 3.
- Part 5: the documents a manufacturer must conform to in order to claim conformity with Part 2, 3 or 4.
What does useful ISO 3834 evidence look like?
Contract and design reviews that capture welding requirements, qualified procedures and welder qualifications, a named welding coordination structure, material traceability, calibration of welding equipment, inspection and test records and nonconformity handling. We keep these in Effivity so each weld's evidence can be found in minutes.

Effivity · ISO and GRC software, included in every engagement
How Effivity helps you fulfil, automate and simplify the requirements of ISO 3834.
Every Sterling ISO 3834 engagement includes Effivity, the ISO and GRC automation platform built by the Sterling group and used in 50+ countries. Your consultant configures the workspace within the agreed scope, so documents, procedure and welder qualifications, audits, nonconformities, equipment calibration, inspection records, training and management review live in one place, the system runs in daily work and the certification auditor reviews a live system rather than a binder. Sterling consulting clients get their Effivity subscription included with the engagement, at no additional cost.

Context, scope and interested parties
The scope statement, the internal and external issues and the interested parties are kept in one register and reviewed on a schedule, so the context stays current as the business changes instead of being rewritten before each audit.
Policy, roles and objectives
The policy, the responsibilities and the objectives with their measures, owners and dates live where the people who own them work; progress is reported from the system, not from a separate spreadsheet.
Risks and opportunities
A risk and opportunity register with owners, actions and review dates; treatments tracked to closure and brought to management review automatically.
Competence, awareness and documented information
Training and competence records for every person, linked to Sterling Academy; documents with versions, approvals and distribution, so the current version is the only one in use.
Welding procedures, qualifications and inspection
Procedure and welder qualification registers with expiry alerts, material traceability, equipment calibration and inspection results, each record created as the work is done.
Monitoring, internal audit and management review
Audit programmes, findings and follow-up; KPIs on live dashboards; a management review that records its inputs, decisions and actions.
Nonconformity, complaints and corrective action
Raised, investigated and closed with root cause and the evidence that the action worked; recurring issues visible to management before they become a finding.
Your own processes, forms and reports
Forms, fields, workflows and reports adapted to how you work, without code; legal and customer requirements tracked to the processes they affect.
What this means at the audit
The certification auditor asks for the coordination structure, qualified procedures, welder qualifications, calibration status and inspection records. In Effivity each is a screen with dates, owners and evidence attached, not a folder assembled the week before. After certification, Sustain™ runs in the same workspace, so surveillance audits find a system that never stopped.

FAQs
Frequently asked questions about ISO 3834
Which part of ISO 3834 do we need?
The part your customer or product standard specifies, most often Part 2 or Part 3; ISO 3834-1 gives the criteria for choosing. If no one has specified it, we help you select the level that matches your products and risks.
How is ISO 3834 different from EN 15085?
ISO 3834 applies to fusion welding of metallic materials in any sector, while EN 15085 is the European series for welding of railway vehicles and components. A rail customer asking for EN 15085 needs that certificate; if you weld for several sectors, one welding system can serve both.
Does Sterling issue the ISO 3834 certificate?
No. Sterling provides consulting and hands-on support. A certification body audits your workshop and decides; under the IIW scheme that is an Authorised National Body for Company Certification, listed by IIW.
