What it is

What is ISO 22163 and what is it used for?

ISO 22163 is the international standard for railway quality management systems. It reproduces the full text of ISO 9001:2015 and adds the railway sector's own requirements, for organisations anywhere in the railway supply chain of industrial products and services, with the emphasis on preventing and reducing defects and on product quality, including its safety aspects. The requirements began as the industry's own IRIS standard; ISO/TS 22163 brought them into ISO in 2017, and the 2023 edition made them a full International Standard.

ISO 22163 is also the basis of IRIS Certification®, the certification scheme of UNIFE, the European rail supply industry association, operated by its IRIS Management Centre. Revision 04 of the scheme combines ISO 22163:2023 with UNIFE's IRIS Certification® Performance Assessment:2023, which contains the assessment method and the certification rules, and with the IRIS portal, database and audit tool. The assessment goes beyond conformity: it looks at how mature and how effective your processes are, and a full certificate receives a Bronze, Silver or Gold quality performance level each year.

The practical test for a railway supplier: does the business bid only what it can deliver, run each contract as a controlled project, trace every product's configuration through its changes, prove the first article and still support the product when its parts go out of production? The answer belongs in daily records, not in a manual written for the auditor.

Current edition. ISO 22163:2023, published on 25 July 2023 and amended by ISO 22163:2023/Amd 1:2024 (climate action changes, February 2024), replaced the Technical Specification ISO/TS 22163:2017. IRIS Certification® Rev. 04 came into force on 1 January 2024; since October 2024 every IRIS audit has had to use the new version, with any certificate not yet transitioned moved over at its next audit, so no certificate in force today is still on Rev. 03. Next: ISO registered the project for a second edition of ISO 22163 in September 2025, and ISO 9001:2026, replacing the ISO 9001:2015 text ISO 22163 reproduces, was published in September 2026. Until UNIFE announces otherwise, IRIS audits apply Rev. 04 with ISO 22163:2023; confirm the timing of any change with your certification body. ISO 22163 and IRIS Rev. 04: what the scheme requires today

Who it is for

Who needs ISO 22163 certification?

ISO 22163 applies wherever railway products are designed, made, maintained or supplied: rolling stock builders, suppliers of equipment, components and spare parts, and maintenance companies, and since Rev. 04 also distributors and turnkey suppliers. Under IRIS Certification® the certificate belongs to a single site that carries out at least three certifiable activities from the scheme's business categories and qualifies for at least one certification scope. Production or maintenance at a connected location can join as a site extension; remote support functions are audited but cannot hold an IRIS certificate of their own. Organisations come to Sterling for ISO 22163 from four starting points:

  • A system integrator, an operator or a tender names ISO 22163 or IRIS. Before planning, confirm whether the request means IRIS Certification® or any certificate citing ISO 22163, which site and activities it covers, and whether a performance level is expected.
  • You supply rail on ISO 9001 and want to qualify for more of the supply chain. The ISO 9001 base is in place; what is usually missing is the railway layer: tender and project management, configuration and change control, RAMS and life cycle costing, first article inspection, obsolescence management and the indicators the IRIS assessment reads.
  • You are entering rail from another sector. Automotive, aerospace and electrical suppliers arrive with strong production controls, then meet product lives measured in decades, safety-related configuration and contract-driven project reviews.
  • You hold an IRIS certificate and it is under strain. A readiness review failed on a KO item, corrective actions miss their 90 days, the performance level has stalled at Bronze, or the certificate is moving to another certification body. It is time to rebuild the system around how the business really works.

The benefit is control of railway products and projects, with evidence customers can review; it depends on ownership in engineering, production and maintenance, which a certificate records but cannot create.

Business benefits

How ISO 22163 supports railway delivery and customer confidence

Rail customers remember the delivery the fleet waited for, the first article rejected at goods inwards and the part nobody could trace to its configuration. We start where your business paid for those failures.

  • Bids you can deliverTender reviews that test technical, schedule and commercial risk before anything is signed, so contracts start with promises you can keep.
  • Projects that keep their datesPlans, milestones, reviews and project risks handled the same way on every contract, with the customer's gates visible to the team.
  • Configuration you can proveEvery delivered product traceable to its baseline and approved changes, so a question asked years after handover still has an answer.
  • First articles accepted first timeA first article inspection that confirms process, documents and tooling before series supply, instead of a rejection at the customer.
  • Products supported for decadesObsolescence watched and life cycle cost understood, so a component leaving production becomes a planned decision, not a fleet-wide emergency.
  • Fewer customer auditsUNIFE counts fewer audits among the aims of IRIS Certification®, and detailed results can be shared through the IRIS portal with the customers you choose.

Track a few measures, such as on-time delivery, first-article acceptance and open warranty claims. The IRIS assessment reads your indicators anyway; make them the ones that run the business.

Requirements

What are the main ISO 22163 requirements?

ISO 22163 prints the ISO 9001:2015 text in boxes and adds the railway requirements around it: supplements inside clauses 4 to 10, additional subclauses such as tender management and business continuity, three railway subclauses closing clause 8 and three informative annexes. The table maps them in plain language, with the 2023 subclause numbers. IRIS then assesses on three fronts: enabling factors, through an evaluation matrix built on the ISO 22163 requirements, customer perception and process performance.

ClauseWhat ISO 22163 addsWhat it looks like in practice
4 Context of the organisationBusiness planning within the context (4.1.1), a new subclause on social responsibility (4.1.2), supplements on the scope (4.3.1) and the system's processes (4.4.3), and the climate action changes of Amendment 1:2024A business plan feeding the quality objectives, a scope naming the railway activities and products, and a process list with owners and interactions
5 LeadershipSupplements to the quality policy (5.2.3) and to roles and responsibilities (5.3.1), and responsibilities and authorities of process owners (5.3.2)Process owners who own their indicators and reviews, and a policy management uses when it decides
6 PlanningSupplementary requirements on risks and opportunities (6.1.3) and a subclause on business continuity (6.1.4)One register for product, project and supply risks, and continuity arrangements for events that would stop deliveries
7 SupportSupplements on competence (7.2.1, revised in this edition) and communication (7.4.1)A competence matrix by role and process, calibrated gauges, controlled tools and documents under revision control
8 OperationOperational planning, now including innovation management (8.1.1); tender management (8.1.2); project management (8.1.3); configuration management and change control (8.1.4); supply chain management (8.4.4); supplements on requirements (8.2.5), release (8.6.1) and nonconforming outputs (8.7.3)Bid reviews before commitment, project plans with milestones and reviews, a configuration baseline with controlled changes, suppliers managed down the chain, and release records a customer can follow
8.8 Reliability, availability, maintainability, safety and life cycle costingReliability, availability and maintainability (8.8.2), safety (8.8.3) and life cycle costing (8.8.4), clarified in this edition, with product safety integrated into the quality requirementsRAMS analyses, safety-related characteristics and life cycle cost figures kept with the design and updated from field data
8.9 First article inspectionA first article inspection before series production and deliveryFirst article reports for new products and after significant changes to design, process, tooling or location
8.10 Obsolescence managementManaging the obsolescence of products and their parts over the product lifeA watch list of critical components, end-of-life notices acted on, and stock or redesign decisions agreed with customers
9 Performance evaluationA supplement on internal audit (9.2.3) and a subclause on process reviews (9.4)An audit programme by process, periodic reviews of each process against its indicators, and management reviews that end in decisions
10 ImprovementA supplement on nonconformity and corrective action (10.2.3)Problem-solving to root cause, corrective actions verified for effect, and improvement visible in the indicators
A–C AnnexesA list of processes (A), the subordinate concept of requirements for products and services (B) and performance indicators (C), all informativeA process map checked against the list, and indicators with formulas, targets, owners and a data source

What does useful ISO 22163 evidence look like?

Tender reviews, project gate records, configuration baselines and approved changes, first article reports, RAMS and life cycle cost records where products carry them, an obsolescence watch list, indicator trends, process reviews and management review decisions. We help you choose the records your processes and customers actually need, none created just to fill a folder, all kept in Effivity from the first workshop, so six months of history exist when the IRIS auditor asks.

Certification process

How do you get ISO 22163 certified?

Build the railway quality system and run it long enough to produce records; then a certification body under contract with UNIFE assesses it under IRIS Certification® Rev. 04. Sterling provides consulting and preparation; the certificate is the certification body's decision and the performance level the IRIS Management Centre's, and that independence gives an IRIS result its standing.

  1. 01
Confirm eligibility and register.Check the site, its certifiable activities and the certification scope against the scheme's categories, choose the full or simplified route, and register on the IRIS portal, keeping company data current.
  2. 02
Gap analysis: review the current system against ISO 22163:2023 and the IRIS Performance Assessment. The gap analysis shows what is missing, from tender and project management to the performance indicators, keeps what already works and sets actions with owners and dates.
  3. 03
Implement and build the record.Railway processes in use and people trained; the scheme expects at least six months of data and records from the activities in scope before the certification audit starts.
  4. 04
Audit, review and prepare the upload pack.Internal audits, process reviews and the management review test the system; we raise findings ahead of the certification body and close each with evidence. The upload pack, from the process list and key-process diagrams to the mandatory indicators and the management review report, reaches the portal at least 60 days before the audit.
  5. 05
Complete the IRIS assessment. The readiness review (stage 1), remote or on site in the 60 days before the audit, where every KO item, the scheme's knock-out requirements, must pass; the on-site certification audit (stage 2); corrective actions closed within 90 days; then the decision, once the audit documents pass the veto check.
  6. 06
Maintain the certificate and the level.On-site surveillance audits every year, with every process assessed at least once across the two, recertification in the third year, and for a full certificate a quality performance level from the IRIS Management Centre each year.

Verify the route before comparing prices. IRIS Certification® is delivered by certification bodies under contract with UNIFE, and every audit result goes to the IRIS portal, where each certificate's status, validity and scope are published. Ask the body to show both before signing. How to choose a credible ISO 22163 provider · The certification buyer's checklist

Cost

How much does ISO 22163 certification cost?

An ISO 22163 price quoted before anyone has seen your site is a guess: a component maker whose ISO 9001 system already works needs a different scope from a maintenance depot building its first railway QMS. What we commit to is an all-inclusive proposal that itemises everything.

Cost componentWhat affects it
Consulting and implementationWhere you start against ISO 9001 and the railway requirements, the certifiable activities and any design responsibility, the number of processes, the deliverables, and the share of the work your team takes on (Design™ or Drive™)
Independent certificationThe certification body's days for the readiness review, the certification audit, surveillance and recertification, travel, your copy of ISO 22163:2023 and the Performance Assessment:2023, which is purchased through the IRIS portal
Internal resourcesProcess-owner and engineering time for project, configuration, RAMS, life cycle cost and first-article work, training, corrective actions and six months of record-keeping
Software and learningIncluded in a Sterling engagement: Effivity for the system and Sterling Academy access for your people, with users, courses and access period confirmed in the proposal
Continued supportInternal audits, process reviews, indicator upkeep, work towards the next performance level, refresher learning and the next edition of ISO 22163 under Sustain™

What moves the price

  • The site, any site extensions and the remote support functions in scope
  • The certifiable activities, from design and production to maintenance, distribution or turnkey supply
  • Whether ISO 9001 already works, and how much railway practice exists
  • RAMS, life cycle cost and obsolescence obligations in your contracts
  • The deadline, the full or simplified route, and the time your team can commit

What a Sterling proposal always shows

  • Deliverables, responsibilities, assumptions and exclusions, in writing
  • Certification-body fees identified separately, so the full programme cost is comparable
  • Effivity, training and Academy access itemised at no additional cost
  • Payment milestones tied to deliverables, not to the calendar
  • One all-inclusive proposal. No surprises, ever

Timeline

How long does ISO 22163 certification take?

How long it takes depends on where you start, how much time your people can give, what the gap analysis exposes and when the certification body can come. It is typically six to twelve months, and the scheme sets a floor: at least six months of data and records from the activities in scope must exist before the certification audit starts. A working ISO 9001 system with established project and configuration practice sits near the six-month end.

PhaseWhat determines the pace
Scope, eligibility and gap analysisAccess to people, the site, contracts, engineering data and existing records
Build and implementationHow far tender, project, configuration and first-article practice must change, training, approvals and the capacity you can release
Evidence and reviewSix months of records, internal audits, process reviews, management review and the upload pack 60 days before the audit
IRIS assessmentWhen the certification body can come, the readiness review in the 60 days before the audit, the on-site certification audit and 90 days to close corrective actions

Bring the tender date or the customer's qualification deadline to the first conversation. We will say plainly whether six months of records can exist by that date, and what has to be decided this month to make it possible. Any certificate date offered before someone has read your contracts is marketing, not planning.

Challenges

Common ISO 22163 implementation challenges

Railway programmes tend to stall at the same five points, and each one has a practical way through.

Tenders, projects and configuration live outside the quality system.

Bids are reviewed in sales, projects run in engineering tools and configuration sits in a product data system, none of it connected to the QMS. We map how each really works, add the reviews, gates and change records the standard requires, and link rather than copy them.

The indicators are not ready for an IRIS assessment.

The scheme requires mandatory performance indicators with definitions and values for the audit period, plus indicators for your key processes. We define them with the process owners, fix the data sources and start collecting early: six months of history cannot be produced in the final month.

RAMS, life cycle cost and obsolescence are treated as customer paperwork.

Analyses produced for a bid and never touched again do not survive an assessment. We tie them to design reviews, field data and supplier notices, so the figures move when the product, the fleet data or the component market moves.

Your people cannot carry the whole implementation.

Split the work in writing between Sterling and your team. Design™ keeps implementation with your people, backed by Sterling's templates and coaching; Drive™ hands the agreed work to Sterling consultants, working next to your process owners.

A readiness review failed, or the performance level will not move.

Work back from the KO items and the lowest-rated criteria, close corrective actions inside their 90 days, then plan the indicators, customer perception and process maturity the next level depends on.

Certification decisions remain with the independent certification body.

How we deliver

How Sterling supports your ISO 22163 implementation

Sterling OS™, the delivery operating system behind every ISO 22163 engagement, runs in five phases that each close with agreed deliverables, a decision owner and evidence. How much support you take depends on your capacity; the method, the software and who is accountable stay constant.

  1. 01
Design™Guided implementation: your people build the railway QMS, supported by Sterling's templates, workshops and coaching sessions.
  2. 02
Drive™Fully managed consulting: Sterling consultants deliver the agreed work alongside your engineers, planners and process owners.
  3. 03
Sustain™After certification: internal audits, indicator reviews, surveillance preparation, work on the performance level, refreshers and new-hire training.
  4. 04
Automate™The railway QMS in Effivity: documents, risks, project and change records, first articles, obsolescence cases, audits, actions, indicators and management review, together in one workspace.
  5. 05
Revise™Moving to the next ISO 22163 edition and the IRIS rules that follow it, ISO 9001:2026, and changes in site, activities or scope.

In the first week we fix the engagement team, the day of the weekly session, the deliverables and the sign-off owners; a slipping action then surfaces in that session, long before the readiness review comes round.

How Sterling OS™ works

ISO 22163 (IRIS) implementation

ISO 22163 (IRIS) requirements

Effivity · railway QMS software, included in every engagement

How Effivity helps you fulfil, automate and simplify the requirements of ISO 22163:2023.

Every Sterling ISO 22163 engagement includes Effivity, the ISO and GRC automation platform built by the Sterling group and used in 50+ countries. Its QMS software follows the ISO 9001 structure ISO 22163 carries, and your consultant configures the railway additions within the agreed scope, from tenders, projects and configuration changes to first articles, obsolescence and indicators. The six months of records accumulate as the work is done, and the IRIS auditor reviews live records instead of a file assembled for the day. Sterling consulting clients get their Effivity subscription included with the engagement, at no additional cost.

Effivity: Context of the Organisation dashboard with issues, interested parties and scope
Effivity · Context of the Organisation dashboard
Context

Scope, business plan and interested parties

The certification scope by site and activity, the business plan behind the quality objectives, social responsibility commitments and interested parties, in registers with review dates.

Leadership

Policy, process owners and responsibilities

The quality policy, process owners with their authorities and indicators, and responsibilities assigned by role, with progress reported straight from the system.

Planning

Risks, opportunities and business continuity

One register for product, project and supply risks, with owners, actions and review dates, and continuity arrangements for disruptions that would stop deliveries, fed into management review.

Support

Competence, measuring equipment and documents

A competence matrix by role and process linked to Sterling Academy, gauge and tool records with calibration status, and documents under version, approval and distribution control.

Operation

Tenders, projects, configuration and suppliers

Tender reviews, project plans and gate reviews, configuration baselines and change requests, first article inspections, obsolescence cases, RAMS and life cycle cost records and supplier monitoring, each recorded while the work happens.

Performance evaluation

Audits, process reviews and management review

Internal audit programmes and findings, periodic reviews of every process against its indicators, customer satisfaction, and management review minutes that show inputs, decisions and actions.

Improvement

Nonconformities, complaints and corrective action

Nonconformities, customer complaints and warranty returns raised, analysed to root cause and closed with proof the fix worked, with corrective action requests from the IRIS audit tracked against their 90 days.

Annex C · Performance indicators

The indicators IRIS reads

Mandatory indicators with their definitions, targets and values for the audit period, and process indicators for your key processes, on live dashboards that feed the process reviews and the upload pack.

What this means at the audit

Sixty days before the audit the scheme expects the process list, key-process diagrams, mandatory indicators, complaint and warranty statistics and management review report on the IRIS portal. In Effivity these come from records kept as the work is done, not from a file assembled in the last week. Sustain™ continues in the same workspace after certification, so each surveillance audit and each annual performance level draws on records that never stopped.

Railway equipment supplier: IRIS, environment and safety in one system

ISO 22163 is often implemented alongside ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 at railway manufacturing and maintenance sites, and the standard is written to be aligned or integrated with other management system standards. In such a programme one process list carries all three sets of requirements, one method assesses every kind of risk, and the same internal audits, management review and Effivity workspace serve every certificate.

Why Sterling

Want successful ISO 22163 certification? Come to Sterling.

Rail suppliers rarely serve one customer in one country. Sterling builds a railway quality approach that holds across your sites, each IRIS certificate owned locally, and works through differences in customer requirements, product families, maintenance regimes and national rules.

60+ countries, one accountable lead, since 2003

Management systems implemented for manufacturers, maintenance providers, contractors and service firms, with one engagement team answerable for the programme wherever your sites are.

All-inclusive proposal

One proposal for consulting, Effivity, training and Academy access; certification-body fees and scheme documents shown separately. No surprises, ever.

Railway controls people actually use

Less documentation and maximum effectiveness: project, configuration and first-article controls, training and software connected to the work itself, so the system is used, not worked around.

Expert and experienced consultants

Seasoned consultants, advising on quality management systems in many sectors and countries since 2003, build your railway QMS correctly from the start, so the IRIS assessment finds a system already doing its job.

The Sterling Promise

What our ISO 22163 certification success guarantee means

100%on-time completion · success · 8,100+ client engagements

We stay with you until your agreed ISO 22163 certification outcome is achieved: implementation, preparation, and corrective action requests closed within the scheme's 90 days. Plain explanations, hands-on delivery, included software and training build a system that holds its level, not just a certificate for the tender file.

The engagement identifies the standard, scope, outcome and responsibilities. Your organisation supplies accurate information and puts the agreed controls into use. The certification body under contract with UNIFE assesses conformity and retains its certification decision, and the IRIS Management Centre sets the quality performance level. Sterling commits to the agreed certification support; that does not extend to a particular performance level, every future contract award or a fault-free fleet.

After certification

What happens after ISO 22163 certification?

Your railway QMS has to keep working as contracts, products and suppliers change. The certification body returns on site each year for a surveillance audit, held between 150 and 30 days before the anniversary of the certification audit, assesses every process at least once across the two surveillance audits, and recertifies before the certificate's three years run out. After each successful audit the IRIS Management Centre issues the performance level again, so the indicators you keep between audits decide the next rating.

Under Sterling OS™ Sustain™ we review indicators, complaints, warranty returns and process performance with you, run the internal audits and reviews, and prepare each surveillance audit and upload pack, so the system stays alive between audits.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about ISO 22163

Is ISO 22163 certification the same as IRIS Certification®?

Not quite. ISO 22163 is the ISO standard: ISO 9001:2015 plus the railway requirements. IRIS Certification® is UNIFE's scheme built on it, adding the Performance Assessment:2023, with its assessment method and certification rules, and the IRIS portal and database, so an IRIS certificate reflects conformity plus an assessment of process maturity and performance. If a customer or tender names ISO 22163, confirm whether it expects IRIS: a certificate citing ISO 22163 but issued outside the scheme has no IRIS assessment and no entry in the IRIS database.

Do we need ISO 9001 certification first?

No separate ISO 9001 certificate is needed, but the whole ISO 9001 system is. ISO 22163 reproduces the ISO 9001:2015 text and adds the railway requirements, and IRIS expects an autonomous railway business management system meeting both, plus the scheme's rules. Your existing ISO 9001 processes are the starting point of the gap analysis.

Is there a simplified route for small companies?

Yes. Small organisations that meet the scheme's criteria can choose a simplified IRIS Certification® with reduced documentation. The certificate is marked as simplified and receives no quality performance level; the route is closed to a small unit belonging to a larger organisation, and a move to full certification happens at a recertification audit after a complete cycle.

Does Sterling issue the ISO 22163 certificate?

No. Sterling's work ends at consulting and preparation. A certification body under contract with UNIFE audits you under IRIS Certification® and makes the certification decision, the IRIS Management Centre sets the performance level, and the result is recorded on the IRIS portal. Anyone offering consulting and certification in a single package is selling paper.

What do Bronze, Silver and Gold mean?

They are the three quality performance levels of IRIS Certification®. After a successful audit the IRIS Management Centre issues the level each year, no later than 30 days after the anniversary of the certification audit, based on your performance results; Gold also requires direct feedback from your customers. Simplified certificates receive no level. Sterling plans the route to the next level with you under Sustain™.

What happens at the readiness review and the certification audit?

The readiness review, the scheme's stage 1, runs remotely or on site within the 60 days before the audit and checks the IRIS prerequisites; every KO item must pass, or the review is repeated. The certification audit, stage 2, is on site and needs at least six months of data and records. If it fails, a new audit follows within 90 calendar days or the nonconformities are closed by documentary means; each corrective action request must close within 90 days.

Who can see our results on the IRIS portal?

The IRIS Management Centre publishes the basic data, such as approval status, the last day of the audit, validity and scope, in the IRIS database. The detailed data, including the audit report, the score and the corrective actions, is shared only with those your organisation grants access through the portal, for example the customers who ask for it.

What do ISO 9001:2026 and the ISO 22163 revision mean for us?

ISO published ISO 9001:2026 in September 2026 and registered a project for the second edition of ISO 22163 in September 2025. Until UNIFE announces otherwise, IRIS audits continue under Rev. 04 with ISO 22163:2023, so implement to that now. A separate ISO 9001 certificate, if you hold one, follows the ISO 9001:2026 transition your certification body confirms. When the new texts appear, our Revise™ service plans the changes.

What do you need to prepare an ISO 22163 proposal?

The site and any connected locations, approximate headcount, the activities and products in scope, whether ISO 9001 or IRIS is certified today, the customer or tender asking, and your deadline. That is all we need to quote an all-inclusive proposal, and nobody has to write a quality manual first.

Before the first call

Prepare a useful ISO 22163 readiness brief

You can start without a quality manual: a short account of your railway business and of what the certificate must achieve, guided by seven questions:

  1. Which customer or tender has asked for ISO 22163 or IRIS, for which site and activities, and by when? Is a quality performance level expected?
  2. Which of your activities would be in scope: design, production, maintenance, distribution, testing and tools, or turnkey supply?
  3. Which products do you supply, into which railway applications, and are you design responsible for any of them?
  4. How are tenders reviewed, projects planned and product configurations and changes controlled today?
  5. What do on-time delivery, first-article results, complaints and warranty returns say about where you are starting from?
  6. Who decides, and whose time is available for implementation, internal audits and training?
  7. Is there an ISO 9001 or IRIS certificate, a booked audit or a customer deadline the plan must respect?

These answers are enough to scope and price the work accurately; nobody scores them, and they are not an audit or a certification decision.

Don’t be fooled by certification scams

If it takes ten days, it is not ISO 22163 certification.

An IRIS certificate is worth having because a customer can check it: a certification body under contract with UNIFE issues it, and its status, validity and scope sit in the IRIS database. The market still offers paper: "ISO 22163 compliant" certificates from bodies with no UNIFE contract, certificates citing the withdrawn ISO/TS 22163:2017, and promises of a certificate with no records behind it. They cost less, until a customer looks for them on the portal.

How to choose a credible ISO 22163 provider

  1. Ask which certification body will audit you, and ask it to confirm its contract with UNIFE for IRIS Certification®; a body that certifies other standards is not automatically able to deliver IRIS.
  2. Ask where the result will be recorded. A genuine IRIS certificate is published in the IRIS database, and its detailed report can be shared through the portal; a PDF with a train on it is not a record.
  3. Ask how the programme will treat your tenders, projects, configuration, first articles and indicators. Documents should describe your products and contracts, not a template still carrying another supplier's names.
  4. Identify who carries each task, which costs sit outside the fee, such as the certification body and the Performance Assessment document, and what support exists when a KO item fails.
  5. Find out what training your people receive and which software will run the system. If nobody is trained and nothing runs in software, the system leaves with the consultant, and the first surveillance audit exposes the gap.
  6. Walk away from "no records needed", "certified in 7 to 10 days" or one invoice that bundles consulting with the certificate. The scheme expects six months of data and records before the certification audit; ten days cannot produce that history.
