ISO 14040 / ISO 14044 · Life cycle assessment

ISO 14040 and 14044 life cycle assessment support for product claims that survive scrutiny.

A life cycle assessment measures the environmental burden of a product from raw material to end of life, and ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 set the rules that make its results defensible. No certificate exists for either standard. Sterling's expert and experienced consultants help your team frame the study, organise the data, document every assumption and prepare the report for independent critical review where it is needed. We help our clients put it into practice and prove it.

  • One proposal with one all-inclusive proposal for an agreed scope: consulting support, Effivity software and Sterling Academy access, with training as applicable to your standard
  • Expert and experienced environmental consultants, working with organisations across sectors and countries since 2003
  • The Sterling Promise: 100% on-time completion, 100% success, 8,100+ client engagements. There is no certificate for these standards, and Sterling does not carry out critical reviews

What it is

What are ISO 14040 and ISO 14044, and what are they used for?

ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 are the two ISO standards behind life cycle assessment, usually shortened to LCA. They come from ISO technical committee TC 207, subcommittee SC 5, which is dedicated to LCA. ISO 14040 sets out the principles and the framework; ISO 14044 specifies the requirements and gives guidelines for carrying a study out. Both apply to full LCA studies and to narrower life cycle inventory studies. ISO 14040 itself says it does not describe the technique in detail or prescribe methods for each phase, which is why the two are always read together.

Organisations use LCA to find where a product's environmental burden really sits, to compare design options, to support environmental product declarations and to answer customers who ask for product-level data. The standards do not tell you what the answer should be. They tell you how to reach an answer that another expert can follow, check and trust.

Current editions. ISO 14040:2006, amended in 2020, and ISO 14044:2006, amended in 2017 and again in 2020, are the editions in force. ISO confirmed both in 2022 after systematic review. SC 5 has a task group working on a revision of the pair; no revised edition has been published, so studies started today follow the current editions with their amendments.

Who it is for

Who needs an ISO 14040 and 14044 life cycle assessment?

Nobody holds a certificate for these standards, so the question is who needs a study done to them. The organisations that come to Sterling for LCA support usually arrive with one of four prompts:

  • A customer wants product-level environmental data. Large buyers increasingly ask suppliers for footprint and impact figures, and a study built to ISO 14044 gives them numbers with a documented method behind them.
  • A tender or specification scores environmental performance. Bid teams need results that an evaluator can trace back to a stated scope, data sources and assumptions, not a single headline figure.
  • A regulator, programme operator or market expects life cycle evidence. Declaration programmes and some product rules build on LCA, and a study that already follows the standards shortens the route.
  • A parent company or group sets a common method. Group sustainability teams want every subsidiary to model products the same way, so results can be compared and rolled up.

If you plan to claim publicly that your product performs better than a competitor's, the study is a comparative assertion, and the standards call for critical review before disclosure.

Requirements

What are the main ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 requirements?

An LCA moves through four linked phases, with reporting and review wrapped around them. The list below gives the requirement areas both standards cover, in plain language and at title level; the detailed requirements sit in ISO 14044 and are checked during the study against the current edition and its amendments.

  • Goal and scope definition: state why the study is done, for whom, the product system, its function, the functional unit and the system boundary.
  • Life cycle inventory analysis (LCI): compile and quantify the inputs and outputs of the product system across its life cycle.
  • Life cycle impact assessment (LCIA): translate the inventory into potential environmental impacts using selected categories and indicators.
  • Life cycle interpretation: draw conclusions, test them for completeness, sensitivity and consistency, and state the limitations.
  • Reporting: present results, data, methods, assumptions and limitations transparently for the intended audience.
  • Critical review: have the study examined independently, which is required where comparative assertions are intended to be disclosed to the public.
  • Limitations of LCA: recognise what the method cannot show and avoid claims it does not support.
  • Relationship between the phases: keep the phases connected, so a decision or finding in one is reflected in the others.
  • Value choices and optional elements: apply weighting and similar choices only under the conditions the standards set, and disclose them.

What does a defensible LCA file contain?

A signed-off goal and scope, a data collection plan, primary data with its source and period, the secondary datasets chosen and why, allocation and cut-off decisions, the impact method, sensitivity checks and a report that a reviewer can follow line by line. We help your team keep each of those in order from the first data request, so the review tests the study, not the paperwork.

How it works

How is an ISO 14044 life cycle assessment carried out?

There is no audit and no certificate at the end. The route is a well-documented study, followed by an independent critical review where the intended use requires one. Sterling supports your team through the study; the reviewer's conclusions belong to the reviewer.

  1. 01
Fix the goal and scope.Agree the intended application, the audience, the functional unit, the system boundary and whether any public comparison is planned.
  2. 02
Gap assessment of data and practice.Map the data you hold against what the scope needs, identify gaps and assign owners for each data request.
  3. 03
Build the inventory.Collect primary data from sites and suppliers, select secondary datasets and record every allocation and cut-off decision.
  4. 04
Assess impacts and interpret.Apply the chosen impact method, run sensitivity and consistency checks and write conclusions that the data can carry.
  5. 05
Report and, where needed, commission critical review.Complete the report, then brief an independent reviewer you appoint and close the review comments with evidence.

Check the review route before you sign. ISO 14071:2024 sets out critical review processes and the competencies reviewers need, and it replaced the 2014 technical specification. Ask any proposed reviewer how their independence from the study team is assured and how their competence matches your product sector, and confirm what a declaration programme or customer will accept before the study begins.

Cost

What does an ISO 14040 and 14044 study cost?

An LCA has no standard price because the effort follows the product system. A single component made at one site differs sharply from a finished product with a long, international supply chain. Our proposals keep each component visible and hold the fee fixed for the agreed scope.

Cost componentWhat affects it
Consulting supportNumber of products, depth of the supply chain, the scope and how much of the work your team takes on (Design™ or Drive™)
Independent critical reviewWhether a review is required or chosen, the reviewer's scope and the number of review rounds; always quoted by the reviewer separately
Data and modelling toolsLCA software and background database licences, if you do not already hold them
Internal resourcesTime from engineering, procurement and site teams to supply data, and supplier cooperation
Software and learningEffivity for documents, records and actions, and Sterling Academy access, included in the engagement with users and access period stated in the proposal

What moves the effort

  • Cradle-to-gate or cradle-to-grave boundary
  • How much primary data your sites and suppliers can provide
  • Number of product variants and impact categories
  • Whether results support a public comparison
  • Deadlines set by a customer, tender or programme

What every Sterling proposal states

  • Deliverables, assumptions, exclusions and responsibilities in writing
  • Reviewer and database costs shown as separate lines
  • Effivity and Academy access itemised at no additional cost
  • Payment milestones linked to deliverables
  • An all-inclusive proposal for the agreed scope. No surprises, ever

Timeline

How long does an ISO 14044 life cycle assessment take?

Data collection sets the pace far more than modelling does. Supplier responses, site metering and the availability of engineering staff decide how quickly the inventory fills. As an estimate, a first study for one product commonly takes three to six months; later studies move faster because the data routes already exist. A critical review adds its own rounds of comments and responses.

PhaseWhat determines the pace
Goal, scope and gap assessmentClarity about the intended use and quick decisions on boundary and functional unit
InventorySupplier cooperation, site data quality and the choice of background datasets
Impact assessment and interpretationNumber of scenarios and sensitivity checks the conclusions need
Reporting and critical reviewThe reviewer's availability and how many comment rounds are needed to close the review

If a customer or programme has set a date, tell us at the outset. We will say plainly what the data allows and which decisions have to be made early to hold that date.

How Sterling implements ISO and GRC standards

Effivity · ISO and GRC software, included in every engagement

How Effivity keeps an ISO 14044 study organised, traceable and current.

Every Sterling LCA engagement includes Effivity, the ISO and GRC automation platform built by the Sterling group and used in 50+ countries. Effivity does not replace your LCA modelling software. It holds everything around the model: the approved scope, data requests and their owners, supplier responses, decisions and their reasons, reviewer comments and the actions that close them, so the study can be repeated and defended. Sterling consulting clients get their Effivity subscription included with the engagement, at no additional cost.

Goal and scope

Approved scope and study decisions

The goal, functional unit, boundary and later changes to them kept as controlled records with approvers and dates.

Inventory

Data requests and supplier responses

Forms for site and supplier data, with owners, due dates and reminders, so gaps are visible while there is still time to close them.

Documented information

Datasets, sources and versions

The source and period of each data item and the version of every document, so the report always matches the data behind it.

Interpretation

Assumptions and sensitivity log

Allocation, cut-off and scenario choices recorded with their reasons, ready for the report and the reviewer.

Critical review

Review comments and responses

Each reviewer comment logged, assigned, answered and closed with evidence, with the full trail kept for the next study.

Competence

Training records

Who has been trained on the method and the data routes, linked to Sterling Academy.

Improvement

Actions and data quality issues

Weak data, late suppliers and review findings tracked as actions until they are fixed.

Across the system

Your own forms and reports

Fields, workflows and reports adapted to your products and sites, without code, and linked to your EMS if you run one.

What this means at critical review

A reviewer asks where a figure came from, why a dataset was chosen and how a previous comment was answered. In Effivity each answer is a record with an owner, a date and the evidence attached. When the product changes or the customer asks for an update, Sustain™ runs in the same workspace, so the next study starts from a known baseline rather than from scratch.

In your engagement

  • Subscription included with the engagement, at no additional cost
  • Configured by your Sterling consultant within the agreed scope
  • Existing records and data sheets migrated, not retyped
  • Admin and user training for your team
  • Modules for EMS, OHSMS, ISMS, FSMS and more when you integrate other standards

The Sterling Promise

What our ISO 14040 and 14044 success guarantee means

100%on-time completion · success · 8,100+ client engagements

We stay with you until your agreed ISO 14040 and 14044 outcome is achieved, supporting the study, its preparation and the resolution of critical review comments. Clear explanations, practical delivery, included software and employee learning turn the investment into lasting capability rather than a report on a shelf.

The engagement identifies the standards, scope, outcome and responsibilities. Your organisation supplies accurate data and makes the agreed decisions. No certificate exists for these standards; where a critical review takes place, the independent reviewer forms and retains its own conclusions. Our commitment concerns the agreed support, not a promise of any particular result or tender award.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about ISO 14040 and ISO 14044

Can a company be ISO 14040 or ISO 14044 certified?

No. Neither standard has a certification scheme, and any offer of an ISO 14044 certificate for a company should be treated with caution. What can be demonstrated is that a specific study was carried out to the standards, supported by an independent critical review where one is required or chosen.

What is the difference between ISO 14040 and ISO 14044?

ISO 14040 explains the principles and framework of LCA, while ISO 14044 contains the requirements and guidelines a study must follow. A practitioner needs both: the first for the concepts and vocabulary, the second for what has to be done and reported.

When does an LCA need a critical review?

A critical review is required when a study supports comparative assertions intended to be disclosed to the public. For internal use it is optional, although many organisations commission one for customer-facing results. ISO 14071:2024 describes how reviews are run and what reviewers need to know.

Does ISO 14044 cover water footprint or organisational LCA?

Related standards from the same committee do. ISO 14046:2014 covers water footprint, ISO 14072:2024 applies life cycle thinking to a whole organisation and ISO 14075:2024 addresses social LCA. Each draws on the LCA method set out in ISO 14040 and ISO 14044.

Do we need ISO 14001 before doing an LCA?

No. An LCA can be carried out without any certified system. Organisations that already run ISO 14001 often find the study easier, because document control, data ownership and corrective action are already in place, and the results can feed back into how the system addresses the product's life cycle.
