In short

ISO 45001 certification in London at a glance

Warehouses, docksides, food plants and building sites share one concern in London: keeping people safe in busy, crowded places. ISO 45001 turns that concern into a managed system, and main contractors and large occupiers increasingly ask suppliers to show it. ISO 45001 is the occupational health and safety management standard: identify hazards, involve workers, meet legal obligations and reduce injury and ill health. Sterling prepares the system from its London office, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included; the certificate comes from an accredited certification body, and national rules sit on the UK page. National law, regulators and accreditation detail sit on the United Kingdom page rather than here.

What ISO 45001 requires

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 45001 requires a company to prove six things about keeping its people safe and healthy at work.

Leadership takes responsibility for safetyTop management is accountable for preventing work-related injury and ill health, and sets a policy and objectives to do so.
Workers have a real sayWorkers and their representatives are consulted and take part in decisions on hazards, controls, incidents and the system itself.
You know the hazards and the risksHazards are identified on an ongoing basis, risks are assessed, and health and safety legal requirements are known and met.
Controls follow the right orderRisks are reduced using the hierarchy of controls, from eliminating the hazard down to protective equipment, including for contractors.
You are prepared for emergenciesEmergency situations are identified, response plans are in place, people are trained and drills are carried out.
Incidents lead to learningIncidents and nonconformities are investigated, causes are corrected, and performance is monitored, audited and reviewed.

ISO 45001 in London: questions clients ask

Why do London contractors ask suppliers for ISO 45001?

Large developments such as the Royal Docks bring many sub-contractors onto shared sites, so main contractors want proof that each firm manages safety systematically. A certificate from an accredited certification body is quicker to assess than a bespoke questionnaire. The exact requirement is set in the tender or contract.

Is ISO 45001 compulsory for Park Royal firms?

No. Health and safety duties come from national law, which the UK page covers, and ISO 45001 is a voluntary standard. Park Royal food and distribution firms adopt it when customers or insurers ask, or to bring accident control under one system. Confirm legal duties with the Health and Safety Executive or counsel.
