In short

ISO 50001 certification in Dubai at a glance

Dubai Municipality reports ISO 50001 certification for its own energy management framework, aimed at reducing consumption, which shows the standard in use on the buyer's side. Energy is a material cost for Jafza's petrochemical and manufacturing tenants and for the base-metals plants of Dubai Industrial City, where furnaces, compressors and cooling drive the bill. ISO 50001 sets out an energy review, baselines, performance indicators and an action plan, assessed by an accredited certification body. The UAE page explains how a licensed certificate for ISO 50001 can also earn an additional In-Country Value credit under the federal programme. Sterling's Dubai office carries out the energy review with your engineers, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included.

Requirements

What ISO 50001 requires

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 50001 requires a company to prove six things about how it manages and improves energy performance.

You know where the energy goesAn energy review shows how energy is used and consumed and identifies the areas of significant energy use.
Baselines and indicators are setEnergy performance is measured against a baseline using indicators that suit your operations.
Leadership commits to improvementTop management sets an energy policy, objectives and targets, and appoints a team with authority to act.
Significant uses are controlledOperation, maintenance and design affecting significant energy uses follow defined criteria, and energy is considered in purchasing.
Data is collected and checkedEnergy data is planned, measured and analysed so that improvement can be demonstrated rather than assumed.
Performance actually improvesAction plans are delivered, results are evaluated, and the system is audited and reviewed so energy performance keeps improving.

ISO 50001 in Dubai: questions clients ask

Does Dubai Municipality use ISO 50001?

Yes. Dubai Municipality announced ISO 50001 certification for an energy management framework intended to reduce consumption, alongside ISO 14001 and other international certificates issued by accredited auditing firms. This shows the buyer is familiar with the standard, but it creates no requirement for suppliers to hold it.

Which Dubai plants benefit most from an energy management system?

Those with large process loads: base-metals and manufacturing plants in Dubai Industrial City, and petrochemical or manufacturing tenants in Jafza. A metered energy baseline shows where savings are available and which uses are significant. The scope of any certificate is then agreed with the accredited certification body.
