PCI DSS compliance in Abu Dhabi at a glance

Where do card data and Abu Dhabi meet? In ADGM's fintech and financial firms, in the retail and logistics operators of KEZAD that fulfil online orders, and in service providers who process payments for clients elsewhere. Card brands and acquiring banks, not an Abu Dhabi authority, require PCI DSS: a merchant or service provider shows compliance by a Qualified Security Assessor's report or a self-assessment, depending on its level and the brands' rules. The first piece of work is reducing the cardholder data environment, since fewer systems in scope means a lighter assessment. Sterling does not validate compliance. Sterling's Dubai office maps card flows with you at your Abu Dhabi premises, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement.

What drives PCI DSS in Abu Dhabi

No Abu Dhabi authority sets PCI DSS; the requirement comes from card brands and acquiring banks, so demand is contract-led.

Requirements

What PCI DSS requires

Strip away the vocabulary and PCI DSS asks any business that stores, processes or transmits card data to comply in six areas.

You know where card data livesThe cardholder data environment is scoped, data flows are mapped and the environment is segmented where possible.
Networks are protectedNetwork security controls restrict traffic to and from systems that handle card data, and configurations are hardened.
Stored data is minimised and protectedOnly the card data you need is kept, sensitive authentication data is not retained after authorisation except under issuer rules, and the rest is protected.
Access is restricted and authenticatedAccess to card data is limited to people who need it, with unique IDs and multi-factor authentication where required.
Systems are logged and testedActivity is logged and reviewed, vulnerabilities are scanned and patched, and penetration testing is carried out.
Policies and people keep it runningSecurity policies, staff awareness, vendor management and incident response keep controls working between assessments.

PCI DSS in Abu Dhabi: questions clients ask

Who requires PCI DSS from an Abu Dhabi business?

The card brands and the acquiring bank do, if the business stores, processes or transmits card data. No Abu Dhabi authority sets the standard. Ask your acquirer for your merchant level and validation route, since they determine the evidence you must produce.

Can an ADGM fintech shrink its PCI DSS scope?

Often by routing card data away from its own systems, for example through a payment provider's hosted page, so fewer components fall in scope. The acquiring bank or a Qualified Security Assessor confirms what counts as reduced scope for your arrangement.
