The ADGM Data Protection Regulations 2021 apply to processing in the context of the activities of an establishment in the free zone, whether or not the processing takes place there, and an Office of Data Protection oversees them. Firms in ADGM, healthcare providers handling patient records and technology suppliers to both are asked how personal data is controlled. ISO/IEC 27701 extends an ISO/IEC 27001 system with privacy controls for controllers and processors: records of processing, data subject requests, third-party disclosures and privacy impact assessment. An accredited certification body issues the certificate, which supports but does not prove legal compliance. ISO 27701 in Abu Dhabi: questions clients ask

Does ISO/IEC 27701 satisfy the ADGM Data Protection Regulations?

No. The certificate shows that a privacy information management system was independently assessed, not that the regulations are met. The ADGM regulations apply by reference to an establishment in the free zone and are overseen by its Office of Data Protection. Ask that office or your counsel what evidence it needs.

Which Abu Dhabi organisations ask for ISO/IEC 27701?

Mostly suppliers whose clients hold regulated personal data: financial firms in ADGM and healthcare facilities. Those clients write privacy expectations into contracts. Companies already certified to ISO/IEC 27001 often find the extension shorter to build than a new system, because the management framework is shared.
