ISO 37001 certification in Sri Lanka at a glance
In Sri Lanka, ISO 37001 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
A Sri Lankan contractor bidding abroad, or a supplier to a multinational, is asked how bribery is prevented before it is asked anything else. The Anti-Corruption Act, No. 9 of 2023 gives effect to provisions of the United Nations Convention against Corruption, creates bribery offences including bribery of a foreign public official, and empowers the Commission to introduce codes of conduct that private sector entities shall adhere to. The Act does not name ISO 37001, so the certificate is an evidence tool and not a legal safe harbour. Certification is by an accredited certification body, and SLAB's recognition page does not name anti-bribery systems among its management systems scopes. Sterling's Mumbai office helps organisations assess bribery risk, design due diligence and whistleblowing controls, and prepare for audit, with Effivity software and Sterling Academy training included with the engagement.
Who needs ISO 37001 in Sri Lanka, and what happens without it
In Sri Lanka the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Companies with public-sector customers or licencesThe Anti-Corruption Act, No. 9 of 2023 covers bribery of public officials, and the Commission is empowered to take measures against corruption in contractual relations between the Government and private sector entities.
- Exporters and contractors dealing with foreign public officialsThe Act includes an offence of offering an advantage to a foreign public official, which raises the stakes for overseas business.
- Banks and finance companiesRegulated institutions face integrity expectations from both the Central Bank and the Commission.
- Suppliers to multinational customersOverseas buyers ask suppliers to show anti-bribery controls as part of due diligence.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 37001 requires a company to prove six things about how it prevents, detects and responds to bribery.
In Sri Lanka these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 37001 explained →

How long does ISO 37001 certification take in Sri Lanka?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Sri Lanka these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Scope: entities, locations and business associates
- Maturity of risk assessment, due diligence and gifts controls
- Whistleblowing and investigation arrangements
- Certification body scheduling and sector-qualified auditor availability
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 37001 certification cost in Sri Lanka?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Sri Lanka these factors move both.
- Headcount and number of sites in scope
- Number of high-risk business associates and jurisdictions
- Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
- Due diligence tooling and investigation capacity
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 37001 consultants and certification bodies in Sri Lanka
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 37001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Sri Lanka are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Sri Lanka
Choose a certification body accredited for this standard by the Sri Lanka Accreditation Board (SLAB) or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. SLAB's recognition page does not name anti-bribery management systems among its management systems scopes, so ask the certification body which accreditation covers ISO 37001 and confirm that your customer accepts it. A certificate does not give legal protection under the Anti-Corruption Act. Edition and transition details: ISO 37001 hub →
Audit language
Business records, standards and tenders are mostly in English, and the Constitution names English as the link language alongside Sinhala and Tamil; interviews with operators and workers may run in Sinhala or Tamil. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
Audits combine on-site interviews and records review; some document review can be remote at the certification body's discretion.
ISO 37001 in Sri Lanka: questions clients ask
Does Sri Lanka's Anti-Corruption Act require ISO 37001?
No. The Anti-Corruption Act, No. 9 of 2023 does not name ISO 37001. It creates bribery offences, protects whistleblowers in private sector entities and empowers the Commission to introduce codes of conduct for private sector entities. A certificate shows controls but gives no legal immunity, so take legal advice on your exposure.
Does the Act cover bribery of foreign officials?
It includes an offence for a person who offers an advantage to a foreign public official in connection with official duties. That matters to exporters and contractors working abroad. The exact elements and penalties are in the Act's text, so read it with your counsel rather than relying on a summary.
What can the Commission require of private companies?
The Act empowers the Commission to introduce codes of conduct for the prevention and eradication of bribery and corruption that private sector entities shall adhere to, and to take measures against corruption in contractual relations between the Government and private sector entities. Check the Commission's published codes and directions for current requirements.
Which accreditation backs an ISO 37001 certificate?
Anti-bribery management systems are not named in the scope list on SLAB's recognition page, so the accreditation behind an ISO 37001 certificate needs checking. Ask the body what it holds, and ask the customer or authority requesting the certificate whether that accreditation satisfies them.
