In short

AS9100 certification in Spain at a glance

In Spain, AS9100 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

Production approval and quality certification are two different things in Spanish aerospace. AESA's page on the Production Organisation Approval rests on Part 21 Subpart G of Regulation (EU) 748/2012, and it does not name AS9100. The quality certificate belongs to the IAQG 9100-series scheme, where certification bodies must be accredited by a body approved by the IAQG and certificate status is held in the OASIS database that primes and higher-tier suppliers consult. That is why component makers and service suppliers pursue AS9100, AS9110 or AS9120 even where no regulator asks for them. The certificate comes from an authorised certification body, not from Sterling. Sterling's Enschede office helps Spanish aerospace suppliers close the gap between ISO 9001 and the aerospace requirements and prepare for the audit, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement and 8,100+ client engagements in 60+ countries behind it.

The need

Who needs AS9100 in Spain, and what happens without it

In Spain the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Organisations that manufacture products or components whose design is certified under Part 21AESA handles Production Organisation Approvals under Part 21 Subpart G of Regulation (EU) 748/2012; that approval is separate from a quality certificate.
  • Machining, composites and electronics suppliers in aerospace supply chainsPrime contractors and higher-tier suppliers ask for evidence of an aerospace quality management system and check certificate status in the IAQG's OASIS database.
  • Maintenance, distribution and stockist businessesThe IAQG's 9100 series also includes 9110 and 9120, so the right standard depends on the activity.

Requirements

AS9100 requirements in Spain

Strip away the vocabulary and AS9100 asks a supplier to prove six things about delivering aerospace products safely and on time.

Product safety is managedRisks to product safety are identified and controlled throughout the product's life, from design to delivery.
Configuration is under controlThe approved configuration of each product is identified, changes are controlled and records match what was delivered.
Counterfeit parts are kept outPurchasing, inspection and supplier controls stop counterfeit or suspect parts from entering the product.
Operational risks are managedRisks to delivery and product conformity are assessed and controlled during planning and production.
Production is proven before it runsProduction process verification, such as first article inspection, confirms that processes can make conforming product.
Delivery and conformity are measuredOn-time delivery and product conformity are measured, and human factors are considered when nonconformities are investigated.

In Spain these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: AS9100 explained →

How Sterling gets a Spanish company certified

How to get AS9100 certified in Spain

One team from the Enschede office carries the work from scoping to certificate. Clients in Spain are served from Sterling's Enschede office, on-site where the work needs it and remotely otherwise.

    1. Discovery call and scopeEntities, locations, regulators and target date, agreed before any proposal.
    2. Gap assessment against AS9100 and the Spanish requirements that apply to youControls you already run for your regulators and customers are reused, not rebuilt.
    3. Your system built with your team in EffivityRisks, controls, evidence, incidents and reviews in one live system the auditor can see.
    4. Internal audit, management review and corrective actionsYour internal auditors trained by Sterling; the evidence proven before the certification body arrives.
    5. Certification body stage 1 and stage 2, then surveillanceAn accredited body audits and decides. Sterling supports the audits and the three-year cycle.

      Time

How long does AS9100 certification take in Spain?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Spain these are the factors that set the timeline.

      • Number of sites and product families
      • State of configuration management, first-article and counterfeit-part controls
      • Customer-specific flow-downs
      • Time to show internal audit and management review evidence

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

      Cost

How much does AS9100 certification cost in Spain?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Spain these factors move both.

      • Scope of sites and processes
      • Aerospace-specific controls beyond ISO 9001
      • Remediation after the gap analysis
      • Certification body fees quoted separately from consulting

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

        Choosing a partner

AS9100 consultants and certification bodies in Spain

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

        • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers AS9100 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
        • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Spain are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
        • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
        • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive AS9100 in Spain (2)

          InstrumentHow it treats the standard
AESA — Production Organisation Approval procedureRelated
Approval of a production organisation as described in Part 21 Subpart G of Annex I to Regulation (EU) 748/2012, for production activities within EASA's scope; AS9100 is not named on the page.
IAQG 9100-series certification scheme and OASIS databaseScheme rule
The 9100 series consists of 9100, 9110 and 9120; certification bodies must be accredited by an accreditation body that is a member of Global Accreditation Cooperation and approved by the IAQG, and certificate status is held in the OASIS database.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Spain

Use a certification body that operates within the IAQG 9100-series scheme, accredited by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA) and approved by the IAQG; certificate status is recorded in the IAQG's OASIS database, so ask the body to confirm its authorisation for the 9100 series before you commit to an audit. Audit language

Audits run in Spanish or English by agreement with the certification body; confirm the language of the audit, the certificate and controlled documents at application, and follow any tender or contract clause.

          Remote and on-site

Remote elements are at the certification body's discretion under the scheme rules; production and inspection areas are normally visited on-site.

AS9100 in Spain: questions clients ask

Does AESA require AS9100 for a production organisation approval?

AESA's page on the Production Organisation Approval does not name AS9100. It describes approval of a production organisation under Part 21 Subpart G of Annex I to Regulation (EU) 748/2012, for activities within EASA's scope. Treat the two as separate requirements, and ask AESA or your prime contractor which evidence each one expects.

Does AS9100 certification replace an AESA or EASA approval?

No. AESA's page describes the Production Organisation Approval under Part 21 Subpart G for production activities within EASA's scope. A quality certificate is a different thing, issued under the IAQG scheme by a certification body. You may need both, depending on what you make and for whom, so confirm with the authority.

How is AS9100 certification checked in the aerospace supply chain?

Through the IAQG's OASIS database, which shows the certification status of suppliers and the results of certification audits. Customers can look suppliers up there. The IAQG says certification bodies must be accredited by an accreditation body that belongs to Global Accreditation Cooperation and is approved by the IAQG, so confirm your body's standing early.

What is the difference between 9100, 9110 and 9120?

They are the three standards in the IAQG's 9100 series of aerospace quality management system standards. The numbers distinguish the activity covered, so a manufacturer, a maintenance organisation and a distributor may each need a different one. Check the IAQG documents and your customers' requirements before you settle on the certificate to pursue.
