In short

ISO 37301 certification in South Africa at a glance

Two South African instruments bear on ISO 37301. Not one of them names it. So why do buyers in South Africa keep asking for the certificate?

Compliance officers here track a growing list of obligations from different authorities. The Financial Intelligence Centre issued Directive 12 on submissions of risk management and compliance programmes in September 2026, section 34A of the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act now examines whether a company had adequate procedures to prevent corruption, and financial institutions add the FSCA and Prudential Authority Joint Standards and POPIA. None of these names ISO 37301. What the standard offers is one management system for all of them: an obligations register, compliance risk assessment, controls, monitoring, reporting, and a culture the board can evidence. Organisations already working towards ISO 37001 often combine the two. Certification is issued by an accredited certification body; the IAF legacy listing shows no SANAS sub-scope for ISO 37301, so confirm the body's accreditation for it. Sterling's consultants, drawing on 8,100+ client engagements in 60+ countries, build the system from the Johannesburg office. The local route and questions follow.

The need

Who needs ISO 37301 in South Africa, and what happens without it

In South Africa the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Accountable institutions under the FIC ActThe FIC issued Directive 12 on submissions of risk management and compliance programmes.
  • Private-sector companies and incorporated state-owned entitiesSection 34A of PRECCA rewards adequate procedures to prevent corruption.
  • Financial institutions subject to the Joint StandardsSeveral regulatory instruments need one compliance management framework.
  • Responsible parties under POPIAPrivacy obligations add to the compliance obligations register.

ISO 37301 requirements in South Africa

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 37301 requires a company to prove six things about how it meets its legal and other obligations.

You know your obligationsObligations from laws, regulators, contracts and voluntary commitments are identified and kept current.
The governing body and management leadThe governing body and top management set the compliance policy and support a culture in which compliance is expected.
A compliance function has authorityA compliance function is resourced, independent enough to act and has direct access to the governing body.
Compliance risks are assessedRisks of failing to meet obligations are assessed, and controls are designed in proportion to them.
Concerns are raised and handledPeople can raise concerns without fear of retaliation, and suspected breaches are investigated and corrected.
You monitor and reportCompliance performance is monitored, reported to leadership, audited and reviewed so the system improves.

In South Africa these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 37301 explained →

How Sterling gets a South African company certified

How to get ISO 37301 certified in South Africa

One team from the Johannesburg office carries the work from scoping to certificate. On-site from the Johannesburg (Sandown) office across Gauteng and, by arrangement, other provinces; remote delivery for distributed teams.

    1. Discovery call and scopeEntities, locations, regulators and target date, agreed before any proposal.
    2. Gap assessment against ISO 37301 and the South African requirements that apply to youControls you already run for your regulators and customers are reused, not rebuilt.
    3. Your system built with your team in EffivityRisks, controls, evidence, incidents and reviews in one live system the auditor can see.
    4. Internal audit, management review and corrective actionsYour internal auditors trained by Sterling; the evidence proven before the certification body arrives.
    5. Certification body stage 1 and stage 2, then surveillanceAn accredited body audits and decides. Sterling supports the audits and the three-year cycle.

      Time

How long does ISO 37301 certification take in South Africa?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In South Africa these are the factors that set the timeline.

      • Number of compliance obligations and regulators in scope
      • Maturity of the compliance obligations register and risk assessment
      • Evidence of monitoring and reporting before stage 2

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

      Cost

How much does ISO 37301 certification cost in South Africa?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In South Africa these factors move both.

      • Number of entities and regulated activities
      • Integration with ISO 37001 anti-bribery controls
      • Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
      • Tooling for the obligations register

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

        Choosing a partner

ISO 37301 consultants and certification bodies in South Africa

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

        • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 37301 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
        • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in South Africa are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
        • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
        • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 37301 in South Africa (2)

          InstrumentHow it treats the standard
FIC Directive 12 on submissions of risk management and compliance programmesExpected in practice
Risk management and compliance programmes for accountable institutions; ISO 37301 not cited on the notice page.
Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act 12 of 2004, section 34AExpected in practice
Adequate procedures defence; ISO 37301 not named.

"Expected in practice" means the instrument asks for the outcomes ISO 37301 covers without naming a standard, and ISO 37301 is what buyers and regulators commonly accept as evidence of them.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in South Africa

Use a certification body accredited for this standard by SANAS or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here unless its South African accreditation scope has been verified. The IAF legacy listing shows no SANAS sub-scope date for ISO 37301; confirm the body's accreditation for ISO 37301 specifically. Edition and transition details: ISO 37301 hub →

          Audit language

English is the usual audit language; agree the audit and document language with the certification body at application.

          Remote and on-site

Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; operational sites are normally visited on-site.

ISO 37301 in South Africa: questions clients ask

Does ISO 37301 meet the FIC's risk management and compliance programme requirement?

No. The FIC requires the risk management and compliance programme, through Directive 12. ISO 37301 is a framework for running a compliance programme, not a substitute for the programme the FIC asks you to submit. The notice page does not cite the standard, and the Directive text was not retrieved. Confirm what to submit with the FIC or your counsel.

Should we combine ISO 37301 and ISO 37001?

They can work together, because related management system standards share a structure. Whether the certification body will audit them in one visit is at its discretion, so ask at application. A combined approach suits organisations that also face the PRECCA section 34A adequate procedures question. Agree the scope with your body early.

Who certifies ISO 37301 in South Africa?

A body accredited for compliance management systems. The IAF legacy listing gives no SANAS sub-scope date for ISO 37301, so SANAS accreditation is unproven. Candidates accredited abroad under the mutual recognition arrangements are an option. Before appointing anyone, get its ISO 37301 accreditation scope confirmed and check it suits your sector.
