AS9100 certification in Portugal at a glance
In Portugal, AS9100 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
Aerospace work in Portugal is export-oriented, and Portugal Global describes manufacturers who design and produce aircraft, satellite and system components and carry out maintenance, a mix it says raises demand for quality and productivity. AS9100 is how many of those suppliers show customers that their processes are controlled, though it is a customer-driven standard, not a Portuguese legal requirement. Certification is granted by a body that is authorised under the aerospace scheme rules and accredited by IPAC, never by Sterling. Sterling's Enschede office assesses the gap to the standard, extends an existing ISO 9001 system, builds the configuration, risk and traceability controls and rehearses the audit, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement. Confirm customer flow-down terms with each customer.
Who needs AS9100 in Portugal, and what happens without it
In Portugal the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Aerospace component manufacturersPortugal Global describes manufacturers designing and producing aircraft, satellite and system components, which it says raises demand for quality and productivity.
- Maintenance and repair providersThe same description covers maintenance activities in the value chain, where customers and authorities expect controlled processes.
- Tier suppliers of machined, plastic and electronic parts moving into aerospaceA supplier entering the sector meets customer flow-down requirements built on ISO 9001.
- Existing ISO 9001 holders in automotive or advanced manufacturingPortuguese manufacturers with an ISO 9001 system extend it, because the aerospace standard adds requirements to the same base.

Strip away the vocabulary and AS9100 asks a supplier to prove six things about delivering aerospace products safely and on time.
In Portugal these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: AS9100 explained →

The Sterling Promise: 100% on-time completion, 100% success, 8,100+ client engagements.Sterling does not certify. Certification decisions stay with independent bodies.
How long does AS9100 certification take in Portugal?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Portugal these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Customer flow-down requirements and the product range in scope
- Maturity of ISO 9001 and of configuration, risk and counterfeit-part controls
- Number of sites and special processes
- Certification body availability within the aerospace scheme
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does AS9100 certification cost in Portugal?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Portugal these factors move both.
- Size of scope and number of sites
- Depth of process, risk and traceability remediation
- Certification body audit fees, quoted separately from consulting
- Customer or special-process approvals pursued in parallel
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
AS9100 consultants and certification bodies in Portugal
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers AS9100 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Portugal are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.
Laws and regulations that drive AS9100 in Portugal (3)
| Instrument | How it treats the standard |
|---|---|
| Portugal Global (AICEP) description of the aerospace industry | Market driver An export-oriented base in which manufacturers design and produce aircraft, satellites, components and systems and carry out maintenance, which Portugal Global says raises demand for quality and productivity. |
| IPAC (Instituto Português de Acreditação, I.P.) as Portugal's national accreditation body | Recognition IPAC's general regulation describes it as the national accreditation body under Regulation (EC) No 765/2008, covering testing and calibration laboratories, clinical laboratories, inspection, certification, validation and verification bodies. |
| EA directory entry for IPAC | Recognition The European co-operation for Accreditation lists IPAC as an MLA signatory with scopes that include management system certification, product certification, certification of persons, inspection, calibration, testing and validation and verification. |
Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Portugal
Choose a certification body that is authorised under the aerospace scheme owner's rules for AS9100 and accredited by IPAC or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). Confirm both the scheme authorisation and the accreditation scope before you apply. Aerospace customers often add their own approval and flow-down requirements. No body is named here. Audit language
Portuguese is the official language and English is widely used in international business. Agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and follow any language requirement in a contract or a regulator's procedure.
Remote and on-site
Audits are on site because production, inspection and configuration-control areas must be seen; document review can be partly remote.
AS9100 in Portugal: questions clients ask
Is AS9100 a legal requirement for aerospace suppliers in Portugal?
No. It is a customer-driven quality management standard for the sector, not a Portuguese law. Portugal Global describes an export-oriented aerospace base that is involved in design, production and maintenance, and says this raises demand for quality. Check each customer's supplier requirements, and the aviation authorities' rules if you hold an approval.
What does Portugal Global say about the aerospace industry?
It describes a dynamic, export-oriented industry with manufacturers involved in designing and producing space systems, aircraft, satellites, components and systems and in maintenance work, and notes participation in European space and aviation safety research programmes. It links the sector to higher demand for quality and productivity, which is where AS9100 enters.
Which body accredits AS9100 certification bodies in Portugal?
IPAC is the national accreditation body, and the EA directory lists it as an MLA signatory with a management system certification scope. AS9100 adds scheme rules on top, so a certification body must also be authorised for aerospace certification. Ask for both its IPAC scope and its scheme authorisation.
Can an ISO 9001 certified Portuguese manufacturer extend to AS9100?
Yes, in practice. AS9100 builds on the ISO 9001 requirements, so an established system gives a head start, but it adds aerospace requirements such as configuration management, risk and product safety controls that need their own work. Plan the gap assessment around your customers' flow-down requirements and expect an additional audit scope.
