HACCP certification in Nigeria at a glance
In Nigeria, HACCP is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
HACCP in Nigeria is a customer and market expectation more than a stand-alone legal certificate. NAFDAC registers food products and inspects facilities under the Food, Drug and Related Products (Registration) Act and the NAFDAC Act, and its food pages list guidelines on food hygienic practices that any hazard analysis should be read against. Retailers, institutional buyers and export markets are the usual source of a request for a certificate, and the accepted route depends on the standard they name. Global ACI does not show HACCP as a separate scope for the Nigeria National Accreditation System, though it lists ISO 22000 as recognised from October 2025, so ask what accreditation stands behind any certificate. Sterling's Lagos office helps processors build prerequisite programmes, hazard analysis, critical control point monitoring and verification records, with Effivity software and Sterling Academy training included with the engagement.
Who needs HACCP in Nigeria, and what happens without it
In Nigeria the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Food and beverage processors selling to retailers and institutionsBuyers ask suppliers to show a documented hazard analysis and critical control points system, however the supplier is licensed.
- Producers registering products with NAFDACNAFDAC registers food products and inspects facilities, and hazard controls underpin a registration file.
- Meat, fish and dairy processorsHigh-risk products draw close scrutiny from customers and inspectors.
- Catering, hospitality and food-service operatorsInstitutional customers ask caterers for documented hygiene and hazard controls.
- Exporters in NEPZA-licensed free zonesExport markets expect documented food safety controls, whatever the national rules.

Take the HACCP readiness checkHACCP requirements in Nigeria
Strip away the vocabulary and HACCP asks a food business to prove six things about how it controls food safety hazards.
In Nigeria these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: HACCP explained →

How long does HACCP certification take in Nigeria?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Nigeria these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Number of product lines and process steps needing hazard analysis
- State of prerequisite programmes such as hygiene, pest control and cleaning
- Maturity of monitoring and verification records
- Certification body scheduling
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does HACCP certification cost in Nigeria?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Nigeria these factors move both.
- Number of sites, lines and products in scope
- Upgrades to premises, equipment or monitoring devices
- Certification body audit fees, quoted separately from consulting
- Laboratory testing for verification
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
HACCP consultants and certification bodies in Nigeria
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers HACCP and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Nigeria are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

| Instrument | How it treats the standard |
|---|---|
| NAFDAC Act and the Food, Drug and Related Products (Registration) Act | Context NAFDAC registers food products and inspects facilities under these laws; a HACCP certificate does not replace registration. |
| NAFDAC guidelines for food hygienic practices | Context NAFDAC's food pages list guidelines on food hygienic practices; the current text states what the Agency expects for a food business. |
| Nigeria National Accreditation System (NiNAS) recognition entries | Accreditation HACCP is not shown as a separate scope among NiNAS's recognition entries on Global ACI, which lists ISO 22000 as recognised from 15 October 2025. |
Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Nigeria
HACCP certification routes vary, because the principles are built into several schemes and some customers accept a certificate from a certification body against a recognised HACCP standard. Confirm with your customer which standard and which accreditation it accepts. Global ACI does not show HACCP as a separate scope for the Nigeria National Accreditation System but lists ISO 22000 as recognised from October 2025. Ask each body for its accreditation certificate and scope. The certification body decides, not Sterling. Edition and transition details: HACCP hub →
Audit language
English is the usual audit and document language; agree it with the certification body at application, and say early if interviews will run in another language.
Remote and on-site
Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion; production areas, storage and hygiene facilities are normally visited on-site to verify controls in operation.
HACCP in Nigeria: questions clients ask
Is HACCP certification mandatory in Nigeria?
The pages that NAFDAC publishes on its laws and food guidance describe registration of food products, facility inspection and hygienic practice guidelines rather than a HACCP certificate requirement. A buyer or an export market may still demand one. Check what applies to your product with NAFDAC, and ask your customers what evidence they will accept.
What do the NAFDAC hygienic practice guidelines have to do with HACCP?
NAFDAC's food pages list guidelines on food hygienic practices, which cover the kind of prerequisite controls that any hazard analysis relies on. They are regulatory guidance and differ from a certification audit. Read the current guideline text, and use it as a baseline when you design your prerequisite programmes.
Who certifies a HACCP system in Nigeria?
A certification body, not Sterling, and the accepted route depends on the standard your customer names. Global ACI does not show HACCP as a separate scope for the Nigeria National Accreditation System, though ISO 22000 is listed as recognised from October 2025. Ask your customer first, then check each body's accreditation certificate.
What comes before the hazard analysis?
Prerequisite programmes: hygiene and cleaning, pest control, supplier approval, maintenance and training. If those are weak, the hazard analysis will have to compensate with too many critical control points. Walk the site against your own flow diagram, fix the basics, then write the plan so that monitoring is practical for the shift teams.
