AS9100 certification in New Zealand at a glance
In New Zealand, AS9100 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
Aerospace work in New Zealand spans maintenance organisations certificated under Civil Aviation Rules Part 145 and a manufacturing base that NZTE places under space and advanced transportation and manufacturing. Part 145 gives the Civil Aviation Authority's Director the power to certify aircraft maintenance organisations, but it does not name AS9100, which comes from the aerospace supply chain: prime contractors and tier-one suppliers pass quality requirements down to the firms that make and repair parts. Certification is voluntary, tied to the customer's terms, and issued by a certification body that is both accredited, for example by JASANZ, and recognised under the aerospace scheme. Sterling, serving New Zealand organisations from its Sydney office, helps teams close the gaps between an ISO 9001 system and the aerospace requirements, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement.
Who needs AS9100 in New Zealand, and what happens without it
In New Zealand the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Aircraft maintenance organisationsCivil Aviation Rules Part 145 governs the certification and operation of aircraft maintenance organisations, which are certified by the CAA's Director.
- Space and advanced-transportation manufacturersNZTE names space and advanced transportation among the sectors New Zealand sells to the world.
- Precision manufacturers supplying aerospace primes overseasPrime contractors set their own supplier quality requirements, and NZTE names manufacturing as an export sector.

Strip away the vocabulary and AS9100 asks a supplier to prove six things about delivering aerospace products safely and on time.
In New Zealand these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: AS9100 explained →

How long does AS9100 certification take in New Zealand?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In New Zealand these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Scope across design, manufacture and maintenance activities
- Configuration management, risk and product safety processes to formalise
- Customer-specific requirements and flow-down to suppliers
- Certification body scheduling around public holidays
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does AS9100 certification cost in New Zealand?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In New Zealand these factors move both.
- Number of sites and product lines in scope
- Special process and counterfeit-parts controls
- Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
- Integration with ISO 9001 and CAA documentation
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
AS9100 consultants and certification bodies in New Zealand
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers AS9100 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in New Zealand are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in New Zealand
AS9100 certificates are issued by certification bodies that are accredited and recognised under the aerospace scheme's rules; agree the choice with the customer who asked for the certificate. Accreditation within New Zealand is by JASANZ, or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). No body is named here unless its scope has been verified. Edition and transition details: AS9100 hub →
Audit language
English is the usual working language of audits; Māori and New Zealand Sign Language are official languages. Agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and follow any language requirement in a tender or customer contract.
Remote and on-site
Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; sites and operations in scope are normally visited on-site.
AS9100 in New Zealand: questions clients ask
Does a Part 145 maintenance certificate replace AS9100?
No, they serve different purposes. Civil Aviation Rules Part 145 governs the certification and operation of aircraft maintenance organisations and the Director grants the certificate, while AS9100 is a voluntary quality management standard for the aerospace supply chain. Neither document names the other, so ask the CAA and your customer how each applies.
Who asks New Zealand suppliers for AS9100?
Typically aerospace prime contractors and tier-one suppliers, not the CAA. NZTE names space and advanced transportation among the sectors New Zealand sells to the world, and manufacturers in these chains receive supplier quality requirements from their customers. The purchase order or quality manual states whether AS9100 is mandatory for your supply.
Can an ISO 9001 certified firm move up to AS9100?
Yes, usually, because AS9100 builds on a quality system. The additional work is in areas such as configuration management, product safety, risk and customer-specific flow-downs, and the scope of design, manufacture and maintenance activities sets the effort. Sterling can scope the gaps, and a certification body decides on the audit programme.
How should I check an aerospace certification body for New Zealand work?
Check two things: that the body is accredited, for example by JASANZ or another body within the Global ACI arrangements, and that the aerospace scheme recognises it for AS9100. Your customer may also name acceptable bodies in its supplier terms. Request scope documents from the body before agreeing an audit date.
