ISO 20000-1 certification in Mauritius at a glance
One Mauritian instrument bears on ISO/IEC 20000-1. It does not name the standard. So why do buyers in Mauritius keep asking for the certificate?
Service management certification in Mauritius is a customer-driven choice rather than a legal duty. ICT and BPO providers are asked for it by overseas buyers, and managed service and cloud providers meet it in due diligence from banks that must follow the Bank of Mauritius Guideline on Cyber and Technology Risk Management and its Guideline on Use of Cloud Services. Owners of designated critical information infrastructure in ICT and broadcasting add a further reason to run services in a controlled way. None of these instruments names ISO/IEC 20000-1, so customers decide what they accept. The certificate comes from a certification body accredited by the Mauritius Accreditation Service or a body within the international arrangements. Sterling's Johannesburg office builds the service management system, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement and 20+ years of practice behind the method.
Who needs ISO 20000-1 in Mauritius, and what happens without it
In Mauritius the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- ICT and BPO service providersOverseas and local customers ask managed service providers to show controlled service management processes, not only technical skills.
- Banks and payment service providers that outsource ITThe Bank of Mauritius expects institutions to govern technology risk, third-party arrangements and incident management, which depends on well-run service processes.
- Data centre and cloud operators serving financial institutionsThe Bank's cloud guideline puts governance and risk expectations on institutions using cloud services, and providers are asked how service management supports them.
- Owners of critical information infrastructure in ICT and broadcastingDesignated owners must follow the regulatory body's directions, so reliable service operations are part of the evidence.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 20000-1 requires a company to prove six things about how it plans and delivers IT services.
In Mauritius these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 20000-1 explained →

How long does ISO 20000-1 certification take in Mauritius?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Mauritius these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Scope of services, sites and supporting suppliers
- Maturity of incident, change, problem and capacity processes
- Service level agreements and customer reporting
- Certification body scheduling and any customer-specific conditions
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 20000-1 certification cost in Mauritius?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Mauritius these factors move both.
- Number of services, customers and sites in scope
- Service management tooling
- Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
- Process documentation and remediation work
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 20000-1 consultants and certification bodies in Mauritius
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 20000-1 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Mauritius are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Mauritius
Choose a certification body accredited for this standard by the Mauritius Accreditation Service (MAURITAS) or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. Ask each body to show an accreditation scope that covers IT service management, because regulators and customers decide which certificates they accept. Audit language
English is the usual language of business records, standards and tenders in Mauritius, with French widely used alongside it, and interviews with staff or suppliers can run in French or another local language. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
Stage audits review the service management system, service catalogue, incident, change and supplier processes; document review can be remote at the certification body's discretion, while operations centres and data centres are visited.
ISO 20000-1 in Mauritius: questions clients ask
Does the Bank of Mauritius require ISO 20000-1?
No standard is named as mandatory. The Bank's Guideline on Cyber and Technology Risk Management sets minimum requirements on governance, incidents, change and third-party risk for banks and payment service providers and encourages relevant ISO standards. Service providers should ask each institution customer which evidence it wants, and confirm the Bank's expectations with the Bank.
Why would a Mauritian BPO or software firm pursue ISO 20000-1?
ICT, BPO and outsourced services are among Mauritius's main sources of certification demand, and financial institution customers must govern cloud and third-party arrangements under Bank of Mauritius guidelines. A certified service management system shows controlled incident, change and service level processes. No rule requires it, so the trigger is a customer request; ask what they will accept.
Do critical information infrastructure owners need ISO 20000-1?
The 2026 regulations name no standard. They let the National Cybersecurity Committee, with the sector's regulatory body, designate systems in sectors including ICT and broadcasting, and they oblige designated owners to follow the regulatory body's directions. Service management evidence can help, but ask the regulatory body what it will direct before investing.
Is ISO 20000-1 the same as ISO 27001?
No. ISO 20000-1 certifies a service management system, covering how services are planned, delivered and improved, while ISO 27001 certifies an information security management system. Many providers hold both, and each needs a certification body whose accreditation scope covers it. Ask each body for its scope and confirm what your customers accept.
