In short

SOC 2 attestation in Tokyo at a glance

A foreign software company opening in Tokyo through the Asian-headquarters zone often brings its US or European customer base with it, and those customers already ask for a SOC 2 report. SOC 2 is an attestation, not a certificate: an independent licensed audit firm reports on whether controls meet the trust services criteria for security, and optionally availability, confidentiality, processing integrity or privacy. The Tokyo team supplies the evidence, and the earlier it is organised, the shorter the examination feels. Sterling's Tokyo office prepares your controls, policies and evidence in Effivity so the audit firm's examination runs smoothly, and the report stays entirely the audit firm's to issue.

Security is designed inControls protect the system against unauthorised access and use; security is the one category every SOC 2 report includes.
Access is granted on need and reviewedLogical and physical access is approved on need, removed when no longer required and reviewed regularly.
Changes and operations are controlledSystem changes are authorised and tested, and operations are monitored so incidents are detected and handled.
Risks and vendors are assessedRisks to your commitments, including those coming from vendors and business partners, are assessed and acted on.
Controls work over timeFor a Type 2 report, a licensed CPA firm tests that the controls operated effectively across the review period.

SOC 2 in Tokyo: questions clients ask

When should a Tokyo software company move from ISO 27001 to SOC 2?

When customers outside Japan ask for a SOC 2 report in their security reviews. ISO 27001 gives a certified system; SOC 2 gives an independent auditor's report on controls over a stated period. The two share many controls, so firms holding one can reuse a good deal of the evidence for the other.

Who produces the SOC 2 report for a Tokyo company?

An independent licensed audit firm examines the controls and issues the report to your management. Sterling prepares the organisation beforehand through scoping, control design, evidence collection and readiness checks. It does not attest or issue the report, and that separation is what keeps the audit independent.
