ISO 14001 certification in Tokyo at a glance
Tokyo runs Japan's first mandatory emissions trading scheme. The Metropolitan Government's cap-and-trade scheme has required facility-level reductions since April 2010, and the fourth compliance period runs from April 2025 to March 2029. For a facility inside the scheme, environmental management is a daily operating task, with measurement, targets, records and review. ISO 14001 is the management-system standard that ties these together: environmental aspects and impacts, compliance obligations, objectives, operational control and internal audit. Sterling's Tokyo office builds the system around the obligations you actually have, with the register and actions held in Effivity and Sterling Academy sessions for the people who run the facility.

ISO 14001 in Tokyo: questions clients ask
Does the Tokyo cap-and-trade scheme require ISO 14001?
The Metropolitan Government's description covers reporting and reduction obligations for large facilities and does not make ISO 14001 a condition. The standard helps because it organises obligations, records and improvement. Customers and group parents may also ask for it. Confirm the scheme's coverage for your site with the Bureau of Environment.
How should a Tokyo office tenant scope ISO 14001?
Scope the activities you control, such as energy use in your floors, waste, procurement and travel, and record how you influence the landlord's services. A narrow, accurate scope is better than a broad one you cannot evidence. Sterling helps set boundaries that match your lease and your data.
