ISO 37001 certification in Ireland at a glance
Two Irish instruments bear on ISO 37001. Not one of them names it. So why do buyers in Ireland keep asking for the certificate?
Irish law deals with bribery through criminal liability rather than certificates. Section 18 of the Criminal Justice (Corruption Offences) Act 2018 makes a body corporate guilty where a director, employee, agent or subsidiary commits an offence to obtain or retain business, and gives it a defence if it took all reasonable steps and exercised all due diligence. Regulation 57 of S.I. No. 284 of 2016 separately requires contracting authorities to exclude operators convicted of corruption. Neither names ISO 37001, whose certification is voluntary and issued by an accredited certification body; a documented anti-bribery system is one way to evidence the steps the company took. Sterling's London office supports Irish organisations with bribery risk assessment, due diligence on associates, gifts and hospitality controls and internal audit, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included in the engagement. Courts and contracting authorities, not Sterling, judge the outcome.
Who needs ISO 37001 in Ireland, and what happens without it
In Ireland the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Companies bidding for Irish public contractsRegulation 57 of S.I. No. 284 of 2016 excludes operators convicted of corruption offences, so an anti-bribery system supports a clean record.
- Boards and compliance officers of Irish bodies corporateSection 18 of the Criminal Justice (Corruption Offences) Act 2018 gives a defence to a body corporate that took all reasonable steps and exercised all due diligence.
- Companies operating in higher-risk markets abroadOffences under the Act can occur partly or wholly outside the State.
- Firms that use agents, distributors and intermediariesThird parties acting for the company can trigger body-corporate liability under section 18.
- Financial and professional services firmsClients and regulated counterparties ask how bribery risk is managed.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 37001 requires a company to prove six things about how it prevents, detects and responds to bribery.
In Ireland these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 37001 explained →

How long does ISO 37001 certification take in Ireland?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Ireland these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Risk assessment of operations, countries and intermediaries
- Due diligence processes for business associates
- Gifts, hospitality and conflict-of-interest controls
- Top management commitment and training
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 37001 certification cost in Ireland?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Ireland these factors move both.
- Number of entities, markets and intermediaries
- Scale of due diligence and monitoring
- Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
- Integration with ISO 37301 or ISO 9001
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 37001 consultants and certification bodies in Ireland
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 37001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Ireland are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Ireland
Use a certification body accredited for this standard by INAB, the Irish National Accreditation Board, or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. INAB's published list of certifiable management systems does not name ISO 37001, so ask the body to show its scope for the standard. Edition and transition details: ISO 37001 hub →
Audit language
English is the working language of Irish business, so audits and controlled documents are normally in English; agree the language with the certification body at application and follow any requirement in a tender or contract.
Remote and on-site
Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; operational sites are normally visited on-site.
ISO 37001 in Ireland: questions clients ask
Does Irish law require an ISO 37001 certificate?
No. The Criminal Justice (Corruption Offences) Act 2018 does not name ISO 37001. Section 18 gives a body corporate a defence where it took all reasonable steps and exercised all due diligence to avoid the offence, and a court decides whether that standard was met. A certified system is one way to evidence your steps. Take advice from your counsel.
How does ISO 37001 relate to the section 18 defence?
It can support it as evidence, without guaranteeing it. The defence depends on proving that the company took all reasonable steps and exercised all due diligence, and a documented anti-bribery system with risk assessment, controls and monitoring is the kind of material a company would point to. Whether it succeeds is for a court, so seek legal advice.
Do public tenders in Ireland require ISO 37001?
Not by the regulation. Regulation 57 of S.I. No. 284 of 2016 requires a contracting authority to exclude an operator it knows has been convicted of listed offences, including corruption, and it does not mention ISO 37001. A particular tender may still ask for evidence of anti-bribery controls, so read the competition documents.
Which bodies certify ISO 37001 in Ireland?
Anti-bribery certificates are issued by certification bodies accredited by INAB or within the international recognition arrangements, with ISO 37001 inside the scope. INAB's published list does not name it, so confirm scope with the body and the accreditation directory. Sterling prepares the system; the certification body issues the certificate.
