AS9100 certification in Ireland at a glance
Two Irish instruments bear on AS9100. Not one of them names it. So why do buyers in Ireland keep asking for the certificate?
Aerospace quality is governed by the sector's own scheme, and suppliers meet it through the 9100 series. The IAQG's OASIS database records suppliers certified under the scheme rules, together with the certification bodies and accreditation bodies involved, so customers can check status. The Irish Aviation Authority publishes the directory of Part 145 approved maintenance organisations; that approval is regulatory and does not name AS9100. Engineering firms in regions such as the Mid-West, which IDA Ireland describes as having engineering companies, may meet AS9100 through customer requirements. Certification is issued by a certification body whose accreditation, by INAB or another recognised body, covers the scheme. Sterling's London office helps Irish organisations through gap analysis, configuration, risk and traceability controls and internal audit, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included in the engagement.
Who needs AS9100 in Ireland, and what happens without it
In Ireland the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Aircraft maintenance and component organisationsThe IAA publishes the directory of Part 145 approved maintenance organisations; customers in aerospace look for supplier quality evidence beyond that approval.
- Precision engineering suppliers to aerospace customersAerospace customers use the sector's OASIS database to check whether a supplier holds 9100-series certification.
- Contract manufacturers moving into aerospace workEntering the sector means meeting its quality management requirements as well as general ISO 9001.
- Software and electronics suppliers to avionics customersCustomers pass down configuration, risk and traceability expectations.

Strip away the vocabulary and AS9100 asks a supplier to prove six things about delivering aerospace products safely and on time.
In Ireland these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: AS9100 explained →

- Internal auditor training for your audit team, as applicable to your standard
- Vulnerability assessment on ISMS engagements
The Sterling Promise: 100% on-time completion, 100% success, 8,100+ client engagements.Sterling does not certify. Certification decisions stay with independent bodies.
How long does AS9100 certification take in Ireland?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Ireland these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Customer flow-down requirements
- Product safety, configuration management and counterfeit-part controls
- Number of sites and product lines
- Existing ISO 9001 maturity
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does AS9100 certification cost in Ireland?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Ireland these factors move both.
- Scope of design, production and maintenance activities
- Number of sites and special processes
- Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
- Documentation and traceability tooling
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
AS9100 consultants and certification bodies in Ireland
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers AS9100 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Ireland are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.
Laws and regulations that drive AS9100 in Ireland (3)
| Instrument | How it treats the standard |
|---|---|
| IAQG OASIS database and 9100-series scheme | Scheme rule OASIS lists suppliers certified or registered under the IAQG rules to the aerospace quality management system requirements (9100 series), with the certification bodies and national accreditation bodies involved. |
| Irish Aviation Authority Part 145 approvals | Does not name the standard The IAA directory lists approved maintenance organisations with their approval numbers and ratings and does not name AS9100. |
| IDA Ireland engineering sector | Does not name the standard IDA presents engineering as a sector, and the Mid-West article describes engineering companies in the region. |
Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Ireland
Use a certification body accredited for this standard by INAB, the Irish National Accreditation Board, or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. Aerospace certification also follows the IAQG scheme rules, so confirm that the certification body is able to record the certificate in OASIS. Edition and transition details: AS9100 hub →
Audit language
English is the working language of Irish business, so audits and controlled documents are normally in English; agree the language with the certification body at application and follow any requirement in a tender or contract.
Remote and on-site
Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; operational sites are normally visited on-site.
AS9100 in Ireland: questions clients ask
Is AS9100 required to hold an IAA Part 145 approval?
The IAA directory of Part 145 approved organisations does not name AS9100 or any other quality management standard. Part 145 approval and AS9100 certification are different things: one is a regulatory approval, the other a management system certificate. Ask the IAA about approval requirements and your customers about the certificates they expect.
What is OASIS and why does it matter for AS9100?
OASIS is the Online Aerospace Supplier Information System. It lists suppliers certified or registered under the IAQG rules to the 9100-series requirements and also holds the national accreditation bodies, certification bodies and auditors involved. Aerospace customers use it to check supplier certification, so confirm that your chosen certification body records certificates there.
Which certification body should an Irish company use for AS9100?
Choose one accredited by INAB or within the international recognition arrangements that can also certify under the IAQG scheme. INAB's published list of certifiable management systems does not name AS9100, so ask the body to show its scope and its OASIS standing before you commit.
Do I need ISO 9001 before AS9100?
AS9100 builds on the quality management system requirements of ISO 9001 and adds aerospace-specific ones, so a mature ISO 9001 system shortens the path. Ask the certification body whether it needs to see any earlier certificate. Sterling can assess where your documented information and processes already meet the aerospace additions and where gaps remain.
