In short

ISO 37301 certification in India at a glance

In India, ISO 37301 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

Compliance functions in Indian listed and regulated companies answer to several rulebooks at once: SEBI's disclosure and cyber circulars, RBI directions that demand board-approved policies and oversight, sector rules and the responsible-business principles reported in the BRSR. None of these cites ISO 37301, and no Indian regulator found requires certification to it. What the standard offers is one compliance management system across all of them — an obligations register, compliance risk assessment, controls, reporting lines, a speak-up channel, monitoring and management review — and, if wanted, independent certification. NABCB's published recognition does not list ISO 37301, so confirm that the certification body's accreditation scope covers it before engaging. Groups that already run ISO 37001 can extend the same structure. Sterling's Navi Mumbai office builds the obligations register with legal and company secretarial teams and sets up the monitoring, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included. The local route and questions follow.

The need

Who needs ISO 37301 in India, and what happens without it

In India the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Listed companiesBRSR requires disclosures against responsible-business principles, including ethics and governance.
  • SEBI-regulated entitiesCSCRF and other SEBI circulars add compliance obligations.
  • RBI-regulated entitiesDirections require board-approved policies and oversight.

Requirements

ISO 37301 requirements in India

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 37301 requires a company to prove six things about how it meets its legal and other obligations.

You know your obligationsObligations from laws, regulators, contracts and voluntary commitments are identified and kept current.
The governing body and management leadThe governing body and top management set the compliance policy and support a culture in which compliance is expected.
A compliance function has authorityA compliance function is resourced, independent enough to act and has direct access to the governing body.
Compliance risks are assessedRisks of failing to meet obligations are assessed, and controls are designed in proportion to them.
Concerns are raised and handledPeople can raise concerns without fear of retaliation, and suspected breaches are investigated and corrected.
You monitor and reportCompliance performance is monitored, reported to leadership, audited and reviewed so the system improves.

In India these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 37301 explained →

How Sterling gets an Indian company certified

How to get ISO 37301 certified in India

One team from the Mumbai office carries the work from scoping to certificate. Across India from the Navi Mumbai office: on-site in Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, on-site or remote for other states; remote delivery for distributed teams.

    1. Discovery call and scopeEntities, locations, regulators and target date, agreed before any proposal.
    2. Gap assessment against ISO 37301 and the Indian requirements that apply to youControls you already run for your regulators and customers are reused, not rebuilt.
    3. Your system built with your team in EffivityRisks, controls, evidence, incidents and reviews in one live system the auditor can see.
    4. Internal audit, management review and corrective actionsYour internal auditors trained by Sterling; the evidence proven before the certification body arrives.
    5. Certification body stage 1 and stage 2, then surveillanceAn accredited body audits and decides. Sterling supports the audits and the three-year cycle.

      Time

How long does ISO 37301 certification take in India?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In India these are the factors that set the timeline.

      • Number of regulators and obligation registers to consolidate
      • Compliance risk assessment across entities
      • Reporting lines and escalation tested
      • Certification body scheduling around festival holidays

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

      Cost

How much does ISO 37301 certification cost in India?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In India these factors move both.

      • Number of entities and regulated businesses in scope
      • Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
      • Obligation-register tooling
      • Integration with ISO 37001

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

        Choosing a partner

ISO 37301 consultants and certification bodies in India

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

        • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 37301 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
        • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in India are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
        • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
        • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in India

Use a certification body accredited for this standard by NABCB or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here unless its accreditation scope has been verified. Confirm the body's accreditation explicitly covers ISO 37301. Edition and transition details: ISO 37301 hub →

          Audit language

English audits are the norm; agree interviews in Hindi or the state language, any interpreter and the document language with the certification body at application.

          Remote and on-site

Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; operational sites are normally visited on-site.

ISO 37301 in India: questions clients ask

          Is ISO 37301 certifiable?

Yes, because it contains requirements against which an accredited body can certify. NABCB's pages do not list ISO 37301 among recognised scopes, so ask the certification body to show that its accreditation explicitly covers it before you rely on the certificate.

Does any Indian regulator require ISO 37301?

SEBI's BRSR and RBI's IT governance direction deal with responsible business disclosures and oversight of compliance, but neither cites ISO 37301. Confirm with your own regulator before treating it as a requirement, and ask customers whether they expect it in tenders.

          ISO 37301 or ISO 37001?

ISO 37001 targets bribery, while ISO 37301 covers all of an organisation's compliance obligations. The two can share one system. Start with 37001 if bribery is your main exposure, or 37301 if you want one framework across every obligation, and ask your certification body how it would audit the two together.
