In short

ISO 20000-1 certification in India at a glance

One Indian instrument bears on ISO/IEC 20000-1. It does not name the standard. So why do buyers in India keep asking for the certificate?

IT service desks, data centres and managed-service providers are measured by the services they run, and ISO/IEC 20000-1 certifies the management system behind them: service catalogue, service levels, incident, problem and change management, capacity, continuity and supplier control. NABCB's APAC recognition was extended to IT service management systems (ISO/IEC 20000-1) in 2023, so accredited certification is available from Indian accredited bodies as well as from others within the international arrangements. RBI's IT outsourcing direction does not cite the standard, but it expects banks to define service and performance standards for their IT providers, monitor them and keep continuity in place, which is the evidence an ITSMS produces. Software and IT services exporters, a sector STPI was set up in 1991 to promote, meet the same expectations from overseas customers. Sterling's Navi Mumbai office builds the ITSMS around the client's existing tooling, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included. The local route and questions follow.

The need

Who needs ISO 20000-1 in India, and what happens without it

In India the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Managed-service, data-centre and IT service providers to banksRBI's IT outsourcing direction expects defined service and performance standards and monitoring.
  • IT services exportersOverseas customers ask for service management evidence.
  • Internal IT functions of regulated entitiesRBI's IT governance direction covers IT service performance and continuity.

Requirements

ISO 20000-1 requirements in India

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 20000-1 requires a company to prove six things about how it plans and delivers IT services.

Services are defined and agreedA service catalogue and service-level agreements state what you deliver and to what standard.
Management owns the service systemTop management sets the service management policy and objectives and provides the people and tools to meet them.
Changes and releases are controlledChanges, releases and deployments are assessed, approved and tracked so live services stay stable.
Incidents and problems are resolvedIncidents and requests are handled to agreed targets, and recurring problems are traced back to their cause.
Capacity, continuity and security are plannedCapacity, availability, continuity and information security are planned so agreed service commitments can be met.
Suppliers and performance are reviewedSuppliers and internal teams are managed against agreements, performance is reported, and the system is audited and reviewed.

In India these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 20000-1 explained →

How Sterling gets an Indian company certified

How to get ISO 20000-1 certified in India

One team from the Mumbai office carries the work from scoping to certificate. Across India from the Navi Mumbai office: on-site in Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, on-site or remote for other states; remote delivery for distributed teams.

  1. Discovery call and scopeEntities, locations, regulators and target date, agreed before any proposal.
  2. Gap assessment against ISO/IEC 20000-1 and the Indian requirements that apply to youControls you already run for your regulators and customers are reused, not rebuilt.
  3. Your system built with your team in EffivityRisks, controls, evidence, incidents and reviews in one live system the auditor can see.
  4. Internal audit, management review and corrective actionsYour internal auditors trained by Sterling; the evidence proven before the certification body arrives.
  5. Certification body stage 1 and stage 2, then surveillanceAn accredited body audits and decides. Sterling supports the audits and the three-year cycle.
Included in every engagement
  • End to end, from one team
  • Effivity ISO & GRC software
  • Preferential Sterling Academy access, with complimentary awareness training for your people
  • Internal auditor training for your audit team, as applicable to your standard
  • Vulnerability assessment on ISMS engagements

The Sterling Promise: 100% on-time completion, 100% success, 8,100+ client engagements.Sterling does not certify. Certification decisions stay with independent bodies.

Time

How long does ISO 20000-1 certification take in India?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In India these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Number of services and customers in the service catalogue scope
  • Maturity of incident, change and problem records
  • Supplier and capacity management evidence
  • Certification body scheduling around festival holidays

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 20000-1 certification cost in India?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In India these factors move both.

  • Number of services, sites and support teams in scope
  • Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
  • ITSM tooling and reporting
  • Integration with ISO 27001 and ISO 22301

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 20000-1 consultants and certification bodies in India

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 20000-1 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in India are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 20000-1 in India (2)

    InstrumentHow it treats the standard
    NABCB APAC MRA certificate — ITSMS (ISO/IEC 20000-6 / 20000-1) sub-scopeAccreditation
NABCB APAC recognition for IT service management systems (sub-scope dated 4 September 2023).
RBI Master Direction on Outsourcing of Information Technology Services (RBI/2023-24/102)Expected in practice
Appropriate service and performance standards, monitoring and continuity for IT providers; ISO/IEC 20000-1 not cited.

"Expected in practice" means the instrument asks for the outcomes ISO/IEC 20000-1 covers without naming a standard, and ISO/IEC 20000-1 is what buyers and regulators commonly accept as evidence of them.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in India

Use a certification body accredited for this standard by NABCB or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here unless its accreditation scope has been verified. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 20000-1 hub →

    Audit language

English audits are the norm; agree interviews in Hindi or the state language, any interpreter and the document language with the certification body at application.

    Remote and on-site

Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; operational sites are normally visited on-site.

ISO 20000-1 in India: questions clients ask

Is ISO/IEC 20000-1 recognised by NABCB?

Yes. NABCB's APAC MRA certificate includes an IT service management systems sub-scope, dated 4 September 2023. That is the accreditation route a certification body would follow for ISO/IEC 20000-1. Check that your chosen certifier's own scope covers the standard and your type of service, and ask to see it in writing before you commit to an audit programme.

Do RBI rules require ISO/IEC 20000-1?

No. RBI's Master Direction on Outsourcing of IT Services expects appropriate service and performance standards, monitoring and continuity from providers, but it cites no standard. ISO/IEC 20000-1 is one way to show those controls to a bank client; confirm what the client needs.

Can it share a system with ISO 27001?

Yes. Both are management-system standards with a common structure and overlapping processes, so one system can serve both. Many IT providers hold the two together, running shared internal audits and management review while the certification body checks each standard's own requirements.
