In short

AS9100 certification in India at a glance

In India, AS9100 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

Aerospace work arrives with its own quality system rules. Indian machine shops, forging units and electronics assemblers that want contracts from aircraft and engine makers are asked for AS9100, the aerospace quality management standard that adds product safety, configuration management, counterfeit-part prevention and first-article inspection to ISO 9001. Certification is issued by certification bodies operating under the International Aerospace Quality Group's rules, and certified suppliers are recorded in the IAQG's OASIS database, which buyers consult. On the domestic side, NABCB lists the Directorate General of Quality Assurance and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation among the bodies that rely on its accreditation, although neither is recorded there as requiring AS9100. Sterling's Navi Mumbai office extends an existing ISO 9001 system or builds one from scratch, covering special processes, supplier control and customer-specific requirements, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included. The local route and questions follow.

The need

Who needs AS9100 in India, and what happens without it

In India the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Machine shops, forgings and electronics suppliers to aerospace primesPrimes and tier-one buyers select 9100-series certified suppliers.
  • Defence and aviation supply chainsDGQA and DGCA are listed by NABCB among bodies relying on its accreditation.
  • Export manufacturers supplying overseas aerospace programmesAerospace customers abroad require the 9100 series.

AS9100 requirements in India

Strip away the vocabulary and AS9100 asks a supplier to prove six things about delivering aerospace products safely and on time.

Product safety is managedRisks to product safety are identified and controlled throughout the product's life, from design to delivery.
Configuration is under controlThe approved configuration of each product is identified, changes are controlled and records match what was delivered.
Counterfeit parts are kept outPurchasing, inspection and supplier controls stop counterfeit or suspect parts from entering the product.
Operational risks are managedRisks to delivery and product conformity are assessed and controlled during planning and production.
Production is proven before it runsProduction process verification, such as first article inspection, confirms that processes can make conforming product.
Delivery and conformity are measuredOn-time delivery and product conformity are measured, and human factors are considered when nonconformities are investigated.

In India these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: AS9100 explained →

How Sterling gets an Indian company certified

How to get AS9100 certified in India

One team from the Mumbai office carries the work from scoping to certificate. Across India from the Navi Mumbai office: on-site in Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, on-site or remote for other states; remote delivery for distributed teams.

    1. Discovery call and scopeEntities, locations, regulators and target date, agreed before any proposal.
    2. Gap assessment against AS9100 and the Indian requirements that apply to youControls you already run for your regulators and customers are reused, not rebuilt.
    3. Your system built with your team in EffivityRisks, controls, evidence, incidents and reviews in one live system the auditor can see.
    4. Internal audit, management review and corrective actionsYour internal auditors trained by Sterling; the evidence proven before the certification body arrives.
    5. Certification body stage 1 and stage 2, then surveillanceAn accredited body audits and decides. Sterling supports the audits and the three-year cycle.

The Sterling Promise: 100% on-time completion, 100% success, 8,100+ client engagements.Sterling does not certify. Certification decisions stay with independent bodies.

      Time

How long does AS9100 certification take in India?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In India these are the factors that set the timeline.

      • Product safety, counterfeit-part and configuration controls to be built
      • Special processes and first-article inspection evidence
      • Customer-specific requirements from primes
      • Certification body scheduling around festival holidays

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

      Cost

How much does AS9100 certification cost in India?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In India these factors move both.

      • Number of sites and part families
      • Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
      • Special-process controls needed
      • Existing ISO 9001 system that can be extended

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

        Choosing a partner

AS9100 consultants and certification bodies in India

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

        • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers AS9100 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
        • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in India are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
        • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
        • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

          InstrumentHow it treats the standard
NABCB — regulators and government relying on NABCB accreditation (DGQA, DGCA listed)Market driver
NABCB lists DGQA and DGCA among bodies relying on its accreditation; AS9100 not stated.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in India

AS9100 certificates are issued by certification bodies operating under IAQG rules with the relevant accreditation; results appear in OASIS. No body is named here unless verified. Edition and transition details: AS9100 hub →

          Audit language

English audits are the norm; agree interviews in Hindi or the state language, any interpreter and the document language with the certification body at application.

          Remote and on-site

Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; operational sites are normally visited on-site.

AS9100 in India: questions clients ask

Is AS9100 the same as ISO 9001?

Not quite. AS9100 contains ISO 9001 and then adds aerospace requirements on top of it. A company with a working ISO 9001 system therefore has a base to build from, but an ISO 9001 certificate alone does not show that the aerospace additions have been met.

          Does DGQA require AS9100?

NABCB lists DGQA, along with DGCA, among government bodies that rely on its accreditation, but its page does not say which standard each relies on it for. Ask the buyer's quality assurance team, or DGQA itself, what your contract actually needs.
