In short

PCI DSS compliance in Dresden at a glance

Dresden shops, hotels, ticketing services, university and hospital cashiers, and software houses embedding payment features all take or enable card payments. Whoever stores, processes or transmits card data, or can affect its security, falls under the payment card industry's data security standard, whatever the size of the business. Requirements include segmented networks, strong encryption, access restriction, vulnerability management, logging and regular testing. How compliance is proven, by assessment or by self-assessment, depends on volume level and the acquirer's rules. Clients may pass the same demands down to software providers. Sterling scopes the cardholder data environment and prepares evidence from its Frankfurt office; qualified assessors complete validation.

What drives PCI DSS in Dresden

Demand is buyer-led: PCI DSS is requested through customer, tender or supplier terms rather than by a Dresden authority or zone rule.

Requirements

What PCI DSS requires

Strip away the vocabulary and PCI DSS asks any business that stores, processes or transmits card data to comply in six areas.

You know where card data livesThe cardholder data environment is scoped, data flows are mapped and the environment is segmented where possible.
Networks are protectedNetwork security controls restrict traffic to and from systems that handle card data, and configurations are hardened.
Stored data is minimised and protectedOnly the card data you need is kept, sensitive authentication data is not retained after authorisation except under issuer rules, and the rest is protected.
Access is restricted and authenticatedAccess to card data is limited to people who need it, with unique IDs and multi-factor authentication where required.
Systems are logged and testedActivity is logged and reviewed, vulnerabilities are scanned and patched, and penetration testing is carried out.
Policies and people keep it runningSecurity policies, staff awareness, vendor management and incident response keep controls working between assessments.

PCI DSS in Dresden: questions clients ask

Does a Dresden online shop need PCI DSS?

If it accepts card payments, yes in some form, though a validated hosted checkout can reduce the scope a good deal. The acquirer or payment provider decides which validation route applies, such as a self-assessment questionnaire. Ask them early so the work is sized correctly.

Can a Dresden software firm avoid PCI DSS by using a payment provider?

It can shrink the work substantially, for example by routing customers through a validated provider's hosted page so card data never touches the firm's systems. The obligation does not vanish, though: remaining controls still need validating, and the provider's own status should be confirmed.
