SOC 2 attestation in Berlin at a glance

Berlin Partner reports that StartupBlink ranks Berlin first among German startup ecosystems, and the AI and fintech companies in that scene sell to customers on both sides of the Atlantic. American buyers in particular tend to ask for a SOC 2 report before they sign. Unlike a certificate, a SOC 2 report is an attestation: an independent CPA firm tests the controls of a service organisation against the AICPA trust services criteria and writes an opinion, with Type 1 covering design at a point in time and Type 2 covering operation over a period. Security is always included; availability, confidentiality, processing integrity and privacy are optional. Sterling prepares the controls and evidence from its Frankfurt office, with Effivity collecting evidence, and the auditing firm issues the report.

Requirements

What SOC 2 requires

Strip away the vocabulary and SOC 2 asks a service organisation to report on six things about the controls behind its service.

You describe your system accuratelyA system description sets out your services, infrastructure, people, data and the boundaries of what the report covers.
Security is designed inControls protect the system against unauthorised access and use; security is the one category every SOC 2 report includes.
Access is granted on need and reviewedLogical and physical access is approved on need, removed when no longer required and reviewed regularly.
Changes and operations are controlledSystem changes are authorised and tested, and operations are monitored so incidents are detected and handled.
Risks and vendors are assessedRisks to your commitments, including those coming from vendors and business partners, are assessed and acted on.
Controls work over timeFor a Type 2 report, a licensed CPA firm tests that the controls operated effectively across the review period.

SOC 2 in Berlin: questions clients ask

What do US customers expect from a Berlin SaaS company on SOC 2?

Usually a recent SOC 2 report, often Type 2, covering at least the security criteria. Some customers accept a Type 1 report for a young product while a Type 2 period is running. Ask the customer what they will accept, and expect to share the report under confidentiality.

Does SOC 2 replace ISO 27001 for a Berlin provider?

No. SOC 2 is an attestation report mainly requested by American buyers, while ISO 27001 is a certificate that European customers recognise. Many Berlin providers hold both and reuse controls and evidence between them. Customer demand tells you which to start with.
