SOC 2 attestation in Shenzhen at a glance

Shenzhen's start-ups and technology groups sell abroad early, and overseas procurement teams ask for SOC 2 reports. Qianhai's authority says its overseas-expansion service platform has gathered more than 200 professional bodies to guide companies into international markets, and Nanshan reported more than 5,500 national high-tech enterprises in 2024. SOC 2 works differently from a certificate. A licensed CPA firm, independent of the company, tests the design of its controls, and in a longer engagement their operation over time, against criteria for security, availability, processing integrity, confidentiality and privacy. The first kind of report is called Type 1 and the second Type 2. Sterling does not issue the report; it prepares Shenzhen teams from its Shanghai office by building controls and evidence ahead of the examiner.

Requirements

What SOC 2 requires

Strip away the vocabulary and SOC 2 asks a service organisation to report on six things about the controls behind its service.

Security is designed inControls protect the system against unauthorised access and use; security is the one category every SOC 2 report includes.
Access is granted on need and reviewedLogical and physical access is approved on need, removed when no longer required and reviewed regularly.
Changes and operations are controlledSystem changes are authorised and tested, and operations are monitored so incidents are detected and handled.
Risks and vendors are assessedRisks to your commitments, including those coming from vendors and business partners, are assessed and acted on.
Controls work over timeFor a Type 2 report, a licensed CPA firm tests that the controls operated effectively across the review period.

SOC 2 in Shenzhen: questions clients ask

Who issues a SOC 2 report for a Shenzhen company?

The company appoints a CPA firm that must be independent, and that firm performs the examination and signs the report. Sterling stays on the preparation side, building controls and evidence, and never attests. Reports reach customers under non-disclosure terms, and a Type 2 report, covering a period of operation, generally persuades buyers more.

Should a Shenzhen start-up pick SOC 2 or ISO 27001 first?

Let the target customers decide. North American procurement teams often ask for SOC 2, while many other buyers recognise ISO/IEC 27001 certificates. The control work overlaps heavily, so starting with either shortens the other. Ask your three largest prospects what their security reviewers accept before you spend on an examination.
