SOC 2 attestation in Beijing at a glance

A SOC 2 report is something a Beijing software company hands to a customer's procurement team. The Haidian Cluster concentrates software, cloud and artificial intelligence providers, and the CBD houses regional headquarters and financial firms that purchase from them and ask hard questions about security and availability. SOC 2 is an attestation, not a certification: an independent licensed CPA firm examines controls against the Trust Services Criteria of security, availability, processing integrity, confidentiality and privacy, in a Type 1 report at a point in time or a Type 2 report over an observation period. Sterling does not issue the report. It prepares Beijing teams from its Shanghai office by building controls and evidence ahead of the examiner, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included.

Requirements

What SOC 2 requires

Strip away the vocabulary and SOC 2 asks a service organisation to report on six things about the controls behind its service.

You describe your system accuratelyA system description sets out your services, infrastructure, people, data and the boundaries of what the report covers.
Security is designed inControls protect the system against unauthorised access and use; security is the one category every SOC 2 report includes.
Access is granted on need and reviewedLogical and physical access is approved on need, removed when no longer required and reviewed regularly.
Changes and operations are controlledSystem changes are authorised and tested, and operations are monitored so incidents are detected and handled.
Risks and vendors are assessedRisks to your commitments, including those coming from vendors and business partners, are assessed and acted on.
Controls work over timeFor a Type 2 report, a licensed CPA firm tests that the controls operated effectively across the review period.

SOC 2 in Beijing: questions clients ask

Who issues a SOC 2 report for a Beijing company?

An independent licensed CPA firm examines your controls and issues the report. Sterling does not attest; it prepares the control environment and evidence beforehand. The examiner is chosen by you, and the report goes to customers under confidentiality. Type 2 covers an observation period and usually carries more weight.

Does a Beijing software firm need SOC 2 if it already has ISO 27001?

Sometimes. ISO/IEC 27001 is a certified management system, while SOC 2 is a detailed report on control design and operation that US-style procurement teams often prefer. The control work overlaps heavily, so firms with ISO/IEC 27001 can reach SOC 2 faster. Ask your largest prospects which they require before investing.
