ISO 45001 certification in Canada at a glance
One Canadian instrument bears on ISO 45001. It does not name the standard. So why do buyers in Canada keep asking for the certificate?
Workplace safety law in Canada is split by jurisdiction. Federally regulated employers follow the Canada Labour Code and the occupational health and safety regulations made under it; most other workplaces answer to their province's occupational health and safety act. ISO 45001 sits across that split: it does not replace any legal duty, but gives employers one system for identifying hazards, consulting workers, investigating incidents and checking that the legal requirements of each site are met. Demand usually comes from clients and principal contractors, who want certified evidence of safety management before awarding work, and from multinational buyers whose supplier codes ask for it. Sterling's Toronto office implements the standard for contractors, manufacturers and service businesses, frequently integrated with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, with 8,100+ client engagements in 60+ countries behind its method. An accredited certification body conducts the audit and issues the certificate. Questions follow.
Who needs ISO 45001 in Canada, and what happens without it
In Canada the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Federally regulated employersCanada Labour Code occupational health and safety regulations apply.
- Construction, manufacturing and resources contractorsProvincial OHS law applies and clients ask for a certified safety system.
- Suppliers to multinational buyersSupplier codes ask for certified occupational health and safety management.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 45001 requires a company to prove six things about keeping its people safe and healthy at work.
In Canada these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 45001 explained →

How long does ISO 45001 certification take in Canada?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Canada these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Number of sites and the hazards they carry
- Whether the workplace is federally or provincially regulated
- Time needed to evidence worker consultation, incident investigation and management review
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 45001 certification cost in Canada?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Canada these factors move both.
- Number of sites and headcount
- Maturity of hazard identification and incident records
- Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
- Integration with ISO 9001 or ISO 14001
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 45001 consultants and certification bodies in Canada
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 45001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Canada are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Canada
Use a certification body accredited for this standard by the Standards Council of Canada or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here unless its accreditation scope has been verified. Edition and transition details: ISO 45001 hub →
Audit language
Audits are commonly conducted in English, or in French where the certification body offers it; agree the audit and document language at application.
Remote and on-site
Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; operational sites are normally visited on-site.
ISO 45001 in Canada: questions clients ask
Does ISO 45001 replace provincial OHS compliance?
No. Legal requirements stay in force whether or not you certify. Federally regulated workplaces follow the Canada Labour Code and its regulations, provincially regulated workplaces follow their province's law, and the Act's page does not cite ISO 45001. Confirm your duties with the regulator or your counsel.
Is my workplace federally or provincially regulated?
That depends on your sector and operation. Federally regulated workplaces follow the Canada Labour Code and its occupational health and safety regulations; others follow the occupational health and safety law of their province. Confirm which regime applies to each site with the regulator or counsel before you design the system.
