In short

ISO 37301 certification in Belgium at a glance

In Belgium, ISO 37301 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

Belgian companies in regulated sectors answer to several supervisors at once: the National Bank of Belgium for DORA, the Centre for Cybersecurity Belgium for NIS2 and the Gegevensbeschermingsautoriteit for personal data, with environmental and sector rules shared between the Federal State and the Regions. ISO 37301 is the international standard for a compliance management system, and it gives boards one register of obligations, owners, controls and breach handling instead of separate silos. No regulator cited here requires it, so the certificate is a voluntary signal to customers and group functions. A certification body, ideally accredited by BELAC, issues it after an independent audit. Sterling's Enschede office builds the system and trains the owners. Questions about regulators, integration with anti-bribery work and certification are answered below.

The need

Who needs ISO 37301 in Belgium, and what happens without it

In Belgium the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Regulated businesses with several overlapping obligationsOne compliance management system can organise duties under DORA, NIS2 and data protection law.
  • Groups operating across the three RegionsDifferent authorities and rules call for one register of obligations.
  • Suppliers to multinationalsGroup compliance programmes expect suppliers to show a working system.

Requirements

ISO 37301 requirements in Belgium

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 37301 requires a company to prove six things about how it meets its legal and other obligations.

You know your obligationsObligations from laws, regulators, contracts and voluntary commitments are identified and kept current.
The governing body and management leadThe governing body and top management set the compliance policy and support a culture in which compliance is expected.
A compliance function has authorityA compliance function is resourced, independent enough to act and has direct access to the governing body.
Compliance risks are assessedRisks of failing to meet obligations are assessed, and controls are designed in proportion to them.
Concerns are raised and handledPeople can raise concerns without fear of retaliation, and suspected breaches are investigated and corrected.
You monitor and reportCompliance performance is monitored, reported to leadership, audited and reviewed so the system improves.

In Belgium these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 37301 explained →

How Sterling gets a Belgian company certified

How to get ISO 37301 certified in Belgium

One team from the Enschede office carries the work from scoping to certificate. Clients in Belgium are served from Sterling's Enschede office, on-site where the work needs it and remotely otherwise.

    1. Discovery call and scopeEntities, locations, regulators and target date, agreed before any proposal.
    2. Gap assessment against ISO 37301 and the Belgian requirements that apply to youControls you already run for your regulators and customers are reused, not rebuilt.
    3. Your system built with your team in EffivityRisks, controls, evidence, incidents and reviews in one live system the auditor can see.
    4. Internal audit, management review and corrective actionsYour internal auditors trained by Sterling; the evidence proven before the certification body arrives.
    5. Certification body stage 1 and stage 2, then surveillanceAn accredited body audits and decides. Sterling supports the audits and the three-year cycle.

    • Effivity ISO & GRC software
    • Preferential Sterling Academy access, with complimentary awareness training for your people

    • Vulnerability assessment on ISMS engagements

The Sterling Promise: 100% on-time completion, 100% success, 8,100+ client engagements.Sterling does not certify. Certification decisions stay with independent bodies.

      Time

How long does ISO 37301 certification take in Belgium?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Belgium these are the factors that set the timeline.

      • Number of regulatory regimes in scope
      • Maturity of the register of obligations and controls
      • Existing audit and complaints processes
      • Certification body scheduling around the summer holiday period

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

      Cost

How much does ISO 37301 certification cost in Belgium?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Belgium these factors move both.

      • Entities, Regions and regimes in scope
      • Depth of obligations register
      • Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
      • Integration with other ISO systems

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

        Choosing a partner

ISO 37301 consultants and certification bodies in Belgium

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

        • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 37301 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
        • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Belgium are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
        • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
        • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 37301 in Belgium (2)

          InstrumentHow it treats the standard
Royal Decree of 31 January 2006 creating the BELAC system for accreditation of conformity assessment bodiesThe system itself
It sets the national accreditation framework that certification bodies work within; the decree does not name any ISO management system standard.
European co-operation for Accreditation (EA) — BELAC as MLA signatoryRecognition
EA describes BELAC as Belgium's National Accreditation Body and an EA MLA signatory, with scopes that include certification of management systems (ISO/IEC 17021-1).

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Belgium

Use a certification body accredited for this standard by BELAC, the national accreditation body, or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that its accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here unless its accreditation scope has been verified. Edition and transition details: ISO 37301 hub →

          Audit language

Dutch, French and German are the official languages and English is common in business. Agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and follow any language requirement in a contract or a regulator's procedure.

          Remote and on-site

Audits combine remote document review with on-site interviews and sampling, at the certification body's discretion.

ISO 37301 in Belgium: questions clients ask

What does ISO 37301 add for a Belgian company?

A structure for knowing which obligations apply, who owns each, how controls are tested and how breaches are handled. A Belgian firm answering to the National Bank of Belgium, the Centre for Cybersecurity Belgium and the data protection authority can use it to join those threads in one system. It does not replace legal advice on any single law.

Is ISO 37301 required by any Belgian regulator?

No regulator cited here requires it. The National Bank of Belgium's DORA report and the CCB's NIS2 guidance describe duties without naming this standard. The certificate is voluntary and is usually requested by customers, boards or group compliance functions. Ask your regulator or counsel what binds you.

Can ISO 37301 be audited with ISO 37001?

Yes. The two share a management-system structure, so organisations commonly run one system covering compliance and anti-bribery, with common internal audits and management reviews. Some certification bodies combine the visits. Each standard still needs its own scope statement and evidence, so plan the combined audit with the body early.

Who certifies ISO 37301 in Belgium?

An accredited certification body, never Sterling. BELAC is the national accreditation body, and EA lists it as an EA MLA signatory for management-system certification. Accreditation depends on scope, so ask for the written scope and confirm that compliance management systems are included before you sign.
