In short

ISO 37001 certification in Belgium at a glance

In Belgium, ISO 37001 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

No Belgian rule cited here makes ISO 37001 compulsory, so the certificate is a commercial choice, usually prompted by a customer's due-diligence questionnaire, a lender's covenant or a multinational's code of conduct that flows down to suppliers. Exporters, contractors and freight and port firms that deal with agents, customs and licensing contacts feel it most. The standard requires a bribery-risk assessment, due diligence on third parties, a reporting channel and investigation procedures, and the auditor samples the records. The certificate is issued by a certification body, ideally accredited by BELAC, never by Sterling. Sterling prepares the policy, risk assessment and procedures from its Enschede office, and teaches managers how the system is tested. Common Belgian questions about the audit, accreditation and logistics exposure are answered below.

The need

Who needs ISO 37001 in Belgium, and what happens without it

In Belgium the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Exporters and contractors working in higher-risk marketsCustomers and lenders ask for an anti-bribery management system in due diligence.
  • Logistics, port and freight-forwarding firmsCustoms and licensing contacts make third-party risk visible.
  • Suppliers to multinationals with global compliance programmesGroup policies flow down to suppliers through contract clauses.

Requirements

ISO 37001 requirements in Belgium

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 37001 requires a company to prove six things about how it prevents, detects and responds to bribery.

Leadership says no to briberyTop management and the governing body set an anti-bribery policy and show visible, consistent commitment to it.
Someone independent oversees complianceAn anti-bribery compliance function has the authority and independence to oversee the system.
You assessed your bribery risksBribery risks across activities, locations, business partners and transactions are assessed and kept up to date.
People and partners are checkedDue diligence covers relevant staff, business partners and projects, with controls on gifts, hospitality and donations.
Financial and other controls workFinancial and non-financial controls make it hard to pay or receive a bribe without it being noticed.
Concerns can be raised and investigatedStaff can report concerns in confidence without retaliation, and suspected bribery is investigated and acted on.

In Belgium these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 37001 explained →

Time

How long does ISO 37001 certification take in Belgium?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Belgium these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Risk assessment across countries and third parties
  • Existing code of conduct, gifts and due diligence procedures
  • Reporting channel and investigation process
  • Certification body scheduling around the summer holiday period

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 37001 certification cost in Belgium?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Belgium these factors move both.

  • Countries, entities and third parties in scope
  • Depth of due diligence on agents and intermediaries
  • Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
  • Integration with ISO 37301 and ISO 9001

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 37001 consultants and certification bodies in Belgium

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 37001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Belgium are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 37001 in Belgium (2)

    InstrumentHow it treats the standard
Royal Decree of 31 January 2006 creating the BELAC system for accreditation of conformity assessment bodiesThe system itself
It sets the national accreditation framework that certification bodies work within; the decree does not name any ISO management system standard.
European co-operation for Accreditation (EA) — BELAC as MLA signatoryRecognition
EA describes BELAC as Belgium's National Accreditation Body and an EA MLA signatory, with scopes that include certification of management systems (ISO/IEC 17021-1).

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Belgium

Use a certification body accredited for this standard by BELAC, the national accreditation body, or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that its accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here unless its accreditation scope has been verified. Edition and transition details: ISO 37001 hub →

    Audit language

Dutch, French and German are the official languages and English is common in business. Agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and follow any language requirement in a contract or a regulator's procedure.

    Remote and on-site

Audits combine document review, which can be remote, with interviews and site visits at the certification body's discretion.

ISO 37001 in Belgium: questions clients ask

Does Belgian law require ISO 37001?

No Belgian rule cited here requires the certificate. The standard is voluntary, and demand usually comes from customers, lenders and group compliance programmes. Anti-corruption law itself applies to every organisation whether or not it certifies, so take legal advice on your obligations separately from the question of certification.

What does an ISO 37001 audit actually look at?

Whether your bribery-risk assessment is real, whether due diligence on partners and agents is applied, whether a reporting channel exists and is trusted, and how investigations are run. The certification body samples evidence, such as gifts registers and approvals. Sterling prepares those processes before the independent audit begins.

Who accredits certification bodies for ISO 37001 in Belgium?

BELAC is the national accreditation system, and EA lists it as an EA MLA signatory for management-system certification. Accreditation is granted scope by scope, so ask the body for its current scope and confirm that anti-bribery management systems are covered before you appoint it.

Is ISO 37001 useful for port and logistics firms near Antwerp?

It can be, where customers or financiers ask about third-party risk. The Port of Antwerp-Bruges describes a large oil, chemical and gas cluster, and firms serving it deal with agents, authorities and subcontractors. The certificate shows a structured approach, but it is a customer-driven choice rather than a port requirement.
