AS9100 certification in Belgium at a glance
In Belgium, AS9100 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
For Belgian suppliers to the aerospace chain, the AS9100 question usually starts with a customer's quality clause rather than a Belgian regulation. Primes name the standard in purchase terms, flow down their own requirements and approve suppliers by their own audits. The standard builds on ISO 9001 and adds aviation, space and defence requirements such as configuration management, product safety and counterfeit-part prevention. Certificates come from certification bodies that your customers accept, ideally accredited by BELAC, which European co-operation for Accreditation lists as an EA MLA signatory for management-system certification. Sterling prepares the system, supplier flow-downs and internal audits from its Enschede office, so that the certification audit finds a working system. Sterling does not certify, and the scheme rules decide which bodies qualify.
Who needs AS9100 in Belgium, and what happens without it
In Belgium the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Machining, composites and assembly suppliers to aerospace primesPrime contractors set the quality-system requirements for their supply chain through their own approval processes.
- Air-cargo and aviation-services firms at Brussels AirportQuality and traceability expectations run through the aviation chain.
- Electronics and materials suppliers moving into aerospaceA recognised aerospace quality system helps new entrants through customer qualification.

Strip away the vocabulary and AS9100 asks a supplier to prove six things about delivering aerospace products safely and on time.
In Belgium these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: AS9100 explained →

How long does AS9100 certification take in Belgium?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Belgium these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Number of sites and product families
- Customer-specific requirements flowing down
- Configuration management and product-safety processes
- Certification body scheduling around the summer holiday period
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does AS9100 certification cost in Belgium?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Belgium these factors move both.
- Sites and headcount in scope
- Depth of special-process, counterfeit-parts and traceability controls
- Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
- Integration with an existing ISO 9001 system
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
AS9100 consultants and certification bodies in Belgium
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers AS9100 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Belgium are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.
Laws and regulations that drive AS9100 in Belgium (2)
| Instrument | How it treats the standard |
|---|---|
| Royal Decree of 31 January 2006 creating the BELAC system for accreditation of conformity assessment bodies | The system itself It sets the national accreditation framework that certification bodies work within; the decree does not name any ISO management system standard. |
| European co-operation for Accreditation (EA) — BELAC as MLA signatory | Recognition EA describes BELAC as Belgium's National Accreditation Body and an EA MLA signatory, with scopes that include certification of management systems (ISO/IEC 17021-1). |
Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Belgium
Use a certification body that your aerospace customers accept for this standard and that is accredited by BELAC or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). Scheme rules set by the standard's owner and by your customers decide which bodies qualify, so confirm them before you apply. No body is named here unless its scope has been verified. Audit language
Dutch, French and German are the official languages and English is common in business. Agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and follow any language requirement in a contract or a regulator's procedure.
Remote and on-site
Audits are normally on-site because production and inspection areas must be seen; document review can be remote.
AS9100 in Belgium: questions clients ask
Does Belgian law require AS9100?
No Belgian law cited here requires it. The requirement comes from your customers: aerospace primes usually name the quality standard in their purchase terms and approve suppliers on their own criteria. Read your customer's quality clauses, and ask the customer which certification bodies and scheme rules it accepts before you appoint one.
How does AS9100 relate to ISO 9001?
AS9100 is built on the ISO 9001 structure and adds requirements specific to aviation, space and defence organisations. A company with a mature ISO 9001 system therefore has a head start, and can often extend its documents and internal audit programme rather than start again. The extra aerospace requirements still need their own evidence.
Which Belgian accreditation is relevant to an AS9100 certification body?
Look at the Belgian accreditation system first: BELAC was created by Royal Decree of 31 January 2006, and EA lists it as an EA MLA signatory for certifying management systems. AS9100 then adds the aerospace sector scheme and your customers' own conditions, so a body needs to satisfy all three. Request its scope documents and scheme status in writing.
Can a distributor or logistics firm at Brussels Airport use AS9100?
Some do, where customers in the aviation chain ask for it, although many logistics firms hold ISO 9001 instead. Brussels Airport describes Brucargo as a logistics zone with round-the-clock customs clearance and a pharmaceutical and perishables focus. Ask your aerospace customers whether AS9100 or a related standard is required for your activities.
