In short

ISO 37301 certification in Australia at a glance

Three Australian instruments bear on ISO 37301. Not one of them names it. So why do buyers in Australia keep asking for the certificate?

Compliance obligations reach Australian organisations from many directions at once: APRA's CPS 230 for banks, insurers and superannuation trustees and their material service providers, the Australian Privacy Principles for APP entities, and the Combatting Foreign Bribery Act's failure-to-prevent offence for companies with overseas dealings. None of these names ISO 37301, and no regulator checked for this page requires it. What the standard offers is a single, certifiable compliance management system: an obligations register, risk-based controls, a speak-up channel, monitoring, reporting to the governing body and continual improvement, so that each new requirement lands in an existing structure rather than a fresh project. Organisations that already hold ISO 37001 or ISO/IEC 27001 can integrate it with little duplication. Certification is by an accredited certification body; confirm its accreditation scope covers ISO 37301 before applying. Sterling builds the compliance system from its Sydney office, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included.

The need

Who needs ISO 37301 in Australia, and what happens without it

In Australia the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • APRA-regulated entities and their service providersPrudential standards create layered compliance obligations.
  • Corporations with foreign dealingsAdequate procedures against foreign bribery sit within a wider compliance system.
  • APP entitiesPrivacy Act obligations need ongoing compliance monitoring.
  • Organisations wanting a certifiable compliance management frameworkISO 37301 provides one.

Requirements

ISO 37301 requirements in Australia

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 37301 requires a company to prove six things about how it meets its legal and other obligations.

You know your obligationsObligations from laws, regulators, contracts and voluntary commitments are identified and kept current.
The governing body and management leadThe governing body and top management set the compliance policy and support a culture in which compliance is expected.
A compliance function has authorityA compliance function is resourced, independent enough to act and has direct access to the governing body.
Compliance risks are assessedRisks of failing to meet obligations are assessed, and controls are designed in proportion to them.
Concerns are raised and handledPeople can raise concerns without fear of retaliation, and suspected breaches are investigated and corrected.
You monitor and reportCompliance performance is monitored, reported to leadership, audited and reviewed so the system improves.

In Australia these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 37301 explained →

      Time

How long does ISO 37301 certification take in Australia?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Australia these are the factors that set the timeline.

      • Number of compliance obligations and regimes in scope
      • Maturity of the obligations register and monitoring
      • Certification body scheduling

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

      Cost

How much does ISO 37301 certification cost in Australia?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Australia these factors move both.

      • Number of entities and regulatory regimes
      • Compliance monitoring and reporting tooling
      • Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

        Choosing a partner

ISO 37301 consultants and certification bodies in Australia

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

        • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 37301 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
        • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Australia are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
        • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
        • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 37301 in Australia (3)

          InstrumentHow it treats the standard
APRA Prudential Standard CPS 230 Operational Risk ManagementExpected in practice
Continuity of critical operations and oversight of material service providers; no ISO standard named.
Crimes Legislation Amendment (Combatting Foreign Bribery) Act 2024Expected in practice
Adequate procedures sit within a compliance system; ISO 37301 not mentioned.
Privacy Act 1988 — Australian Privacy PrinciplesExpected in practice
Ongoing compliance obligations for APP entities; ISO 37301 not mentioned.

"Expected in practice" means the instrument asks for the outcomes ISO 37301 covers without naming a standard, and ISO 37301 is what buyers and regulators commonly accept as evidence of them.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Australia

Use a certification body accredited for this standard by JASANZ or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here unless its accreditation scope has been verified. Edition and transition details: ISO 37301 hub →

          Audit language

Audits are conducted in English; agree the audit and document language with the certification body at application.

          Remote and on-site

Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; operational sites are normally visited on-site.

ISO 37301 in Australia: questions clients ask

Is ISO 37301 required in Australia?

No regulator we checked requires ISO 37301. It does provide a structure for managing obligations such as CPS 230, the Privacy Act and foreign bribery procedures, so organisations adopt it to organise that work. Whether it is worth having depends on your obligations and customers; confirm any legal point with your counsel.

How does ISO 37301 relate to ISO 37001?

ISO 37301 covers compliance management in general, across whatever obligations an organisation has, while ISO 37001 focuses on bribery alone. An organisation may therefore treat anti-bribery as one topic inside a broader compliance system, or hold either certificate independently, depending on the risk it needs to address.

          Who issues ISO 37301 certificates?

Certification bodies issue ISO 37301 certificates, so the body you choose needs accreditation that covers this particular standard. Confirm its accreditation scope for ISO 37301 directly, as accreditation for other management-system standards should not be assumed to extend to it. No body is named on this page, because none has been verified.
