In short

ISO 27701 certification in Australia at a glance

Two Australian instruments bear on ISO/IEC 27701. Not one of them names it. So why do buyers in Australia keep asking for the certificate?

APP 11 of the Privacy Act 1988 requires reasonable steps, not a certificate. An APP entity must protect personal information from misuse, interference and loss and from unauthorised access, modification or disclosure, and under the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme it must assess suspected breaches and notify affected individuals and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner when a breach is eligible. ISO/IEC 27701 gives that obligation a structure an auditor can test: it extends an ISO/IEC 27001 information security management system with privacy roles, records of processing, controller and processor controls and incident handling. No certificate demonstrates compliance with the Act, but a certified privacy information management system is strong evidence of the steps taken and of breach readiness. Certification is issued by an accredited certification body on top of ISO/IEC 27001. Sterling's Sydney office maps personal information flows and builds the privacy controls, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included.

The need

Who needs ISO 27701 in Australia, and what happens without it

In Australia the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • APP entities with significant personal information holdingsAPP 11 requires reasonable steps to secure personal information.
  • Organisations preparing for data breach scrutinyThe NDB scheme requires assessment and notification of eligible data breaches.
  • Processors and SaaS providers serving Australian and overseas clientsClients ask for certified evidence of privacy controls.

ISO 27701 requirements in Australia

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 27701 requires a company to prove six things about how it handles personal data.

You know whose data you hold and whyYou know what personal data you process, for which purposes and on what basis, and whether you act as controller, processor or both.
Privacy has an ownerManagement assigns responsibility for privacy and sets objectives, so everyone who handles personal data knows their role.
You assessed the privacy risksRisks to the people whose data you process are assessed and treated, including when new products and processes are designed.
People can exercise their rightsRequests to access, correct or delete data, and other individual rights, run through a defined and timely process.
Sharing and suppliers are controlledDisclosures, transfers and processors are governed by agreements and checks, so data is used only as agreed.
You can demonstrate itRecords of processing, notices and decisions are kept, and the privacy system is audited and reviewed like any management system.

In Australia these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 27701 explained →

How Sterling gets an Australian company certified

How to get ISO 27701 certified in Australia

One team from the Sydney office carries the work from scoping to certificate. All states and territories, delivered from the Sydney office; remote delivery for distributed teams.

  1. Discovery call and scopeEntities, locations, regulators and target date, agreed before any proposal.
  2. Gap assessment against ISO/IEC 27701 and the Australian requirements that apply to youControls you already run for your regulators and customers are reused, not rebuilt.
  3. Your system built with your team in EffivityRisks, controls, evidence, incidents and reviews in one live system the auditor can see.
  4. Internal audit, management review and corrective actionsYour internal auditors trained by Sterling; the evidence proven before the certification body arrives.

Time

How long does ISO 27701 certification take in Australia?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Australia these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Existing ISO/IEC 27001 certification (a prerequisite for ISO/IEC 27701)
  • Number of processing activities to map
  • Controller versus processor role
  • Certification body scheduling

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 27701 certification cost in Australia?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Australia these factors move both.

  • Volume and sensitivity of personal information
  • Number of systems and processors
  • Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 27701 consultants and certification bodies in Australia

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 27701 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Australia are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 27701 in Australia (3)

    InstrumentHow it treats the standard
Privacy Act 1988 — APP 11 (security of personal information)Expected in practice
Reasonable steps to protect personal information; no standard named and no certification required.
Notifiable Data Breaches scheme (Privacy Act 1988, Part IIIC)Expected in practice
Eligible data breaches must be notified to affected individuals and the Commissioner; no standard named.
JASANZ — accreditation of certification bodiesAccreditation
Accredits certification bodies for management-system standards; confirm the ISO/IEC 27701 scope of the chosen certification body.

"Expected in practice" means the instrument asks for the outcomes ISO/IEC 27701 covers without naming a standard, and ISO/IEC 27701 is what buyers and regulators commonly accept as evidence of them.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Australia

Use a certification body accredited for this standard by JASANZ or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here unless its accreditation scope has been verified. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 27701 hub →

    Audit language

Audits are conducted in English; agree the audit and document language with the certification body at application.

    Remote and on-site

Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; operational sites are normally visited on-site.

ISO 27701 in Australia: questions clients ask

Does ISO/IEC 27701 prove Privacy Act compliance?

No certificate proves compliance with the Privacy Act. ISO/IEC 27701 gives structured evidence for APP 11 and breach readiness, which helps show reasonable steps, but legal compliance remains the organisation's responsibility. Neither the Act nor the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme names the standard, so confirm your obligations with your counsel or the OAIC.

Do we need ISO 27001 first?

Yes, in effect. ISO/IEC 27701 extends an ISO/IEC 27001 information security management system, so existing ISO/IEC 27001 certification is a prerequisite. If you have no ISMS yet, build that first and add the privacy extension, mapping your processing activities and your controller or processor role as you go.

Who issues ISO/IEC 27701 certificates in Australia?

ISO/IEC 27701 certificates are issued by certification bodies, not consultants, and JASANZ is the Australian body that accredits certification bodies for management-system standards. Confirm that a body's accreditation scope includes ISO/IEC 27701 before engaging it. No body is named here because none has been verified for this standard.
