ISO and GRC standards for healthcare providers: where to start: video

A short film on the standards healthcare providers are asked for to prove quality of care, protect patient information and keep staff safe, and which to start with.

Key takeaways

  • Healthcare providers prove quality of care, patient data protection and staff safety.
  • ISO 7101 is written for quality in healthcare organisations; ISO 15189 for medical laboratories.
  • HIPAA and ADHICS are regulatory requirements, not ISO certifications.
  • One integrated system avoids separate paperwork for each standard.
  • Start where the strongest demand comes from: care quality, patient data or laboratory results.

What healthcare providers are asked to prove

Hospitals, clinics, laboratories and telehealth services are asked to prove three things: quality of care, protection of patient information and the safety of their staff. The standards that answer those questions include ISO 9001 for quality management, ISO 7101 for healthcare quality, ISO 15189 for medical laboratories, ISO/IEC 27001 for information security, HIPAA for US patient data, ADHICS for healthcare entities in Abu Dhabi, ISO 45001 for staff safety and ISO 14001 for environmental management.

Its recommendation is one practical management system built around the way care is actually delivered, so that wards and departments are not audited on separate sets of paperwork.

Why the questions are arriving now, and where to start

The questions come from different directions: a health authority, a payer, a hospital group, a partner laboratory or a patient who has read about a data breach. Health authorities set the rules: in Abu Dhabi the Department of Health establishes and enforces ADHICS for the entities it regulates, and in the United States the HHS Office for Civil Rights enforces HIPAA. Cyber incidents reach the ward, and HIPAA enforcement actions have cited ransomware, phishing, missing risk analysis and gaps in business associate agreements. Insurers, employers and partner facilities ask for evidence too.

The starting point depends on the strongest demand. Many providers begin with quality of care, so that admission, treatment, discharge and referral run to agreed processes with records a surveyor can follow. Others begin with patient data, covering clinical systems, telehealth platforms and suppliers with assessed risks and working controls, or with laboratory competence under ISO 15189. Select the Standard™, a free tool, shows which standards healthcare providers are typically asked for. HIPAA and ADHICS are regulatory requirements rather than ISO certifications.

Sterling's consultants work with clinical, operational and IT teams under one all-inclusive proposal for a defined scope, with Effivity, Sterling Academy access and internal auditor training as applicable.
