Two-minute brief
ISO 55001 requirements explained: video brief
A two-minute brief on the asset-specific requirements of ISO 55001:2024 inside the shared management system structure.
Key takeaways
- ISO 55001:2024 follows clauses 4 to 10 with asset-specific subclauses.
- The decision-making framework is part of context.
- The SAMP and asset management plans sit in planning.
- Data, information and knowledge are support requirements.
- Improvement includes predictive action.
Asset-specific subclauses
ISO 55001:2024 follows the harmonised structure shared by the ISO management system standards, clauses 4 to 10, with asset-specific subclauses on decision-making, the strategic asset management plan, data, information and knowledge, life-cycle management and predictive action. This short film walks through where they sit.
Clause 4 asks the organisation to understand itself, its stakeholders and the boundaries of the system, and to define how asset management decisions are made: the framework, the value sought from assets, the criteria and the methods, processes and tools. In practice that means a scope statement naming the asset portfolio, sites and activities, a stakeholder analysis and a documented decision-making framework. Leadership commits to asset management and sets the policy.
Plans, data and life-cycle management
Planning requires the strategic asset management plan, asset management objectives aligned with organisational objectives, and asset management plans that set out the activities, resources and timescales for each asset class. Support adds requirements for data, information and knowledge, so that decisions rest on reliable asset information, along with competence, awareness and communication. Operation covers planning and control of life-cycle activities and outsourced asset management activities. Performance evaluation monitors asset performance and the system, and improvement includes predictive action alongside corrective action.
The standard applies to any organisation whose assets carry the business: utilities, infrastructure and transport operators, oil and gas, manufacturers, property portfolios, public bodies and the contractors who manage assets for them. ISO 55001:2024 is the second edition. Certification is assessed and decided by an independent, accredited certification body whose auditors meet the competence requirements for asset management.
A complete asset register is not needed before starting, but a governed one is: the asset classes that matter identified, the attributes decisions need defined, owners and quality rules assigned and a plan for improving the rest. A maintenance or enterprise asset management system records work; ISO 55001 requires how the organisation decides what work, investment and disposal its assets need, and that system becomes a source of evidence rather than a substitute. The standard applies to physical and non-physical assets alike, and certificates to the 2014 edition become invalid on 31 July 2027.

ISO 55001: questions people ask
Do we need a complete asset register before we start?
No. You need a governed one: the asset classes that matter identified, the attributes decisions need defined, owners and quality rules assigned, and a plan for improving the rest. The gap analysis usually finds the register in several systems that disagree; the work is to decide which is the source of truth for what.
What is a strategic asset management plan, and is it mandatory?
The SAMP is the documented link between your organisational objectives and your asset management objectives. In the 2024 edition it is a subclause of its own (6.2.1), carries the decision-making framework and is required. It can be one document or a set of documents you already have, provided they cover what the standard requires and leadership stands behind them.
Is ISO 55001 only for physical assets?
No. The standard applies to all types of assets, physical and non-physical, and the organisation decides which assets the system covers, taking its legal, regulatory and contractual requirements into account. Most certified systems centre on physical infrastructure, plant and property; scope can widen later.
We already run a CMMS or EAM system. Is that not enough?
A maintenance system records work. ISO 55001 requires how you decide what work, investment and disposal the assets need, on what criteria, and how you know the decisions delivered value. Your CMMS or EAM becomes a source of evidence inside the system, not a substitute for it; Effivity sits alongside it for the management-system records.
Is ISO 55001 certification mandatory?
No law requires it in general. Regulators, concession grantors, lenders and large customers ask for evidence of systematic asset management, and an ISO 55001 certificate is often the simplest way to provide it. Many organisations implement it with no external demand at all, because the renewal backlog and the failure rate demand a better way to decide.
