In short

ISO 50001 certification in Washington DC at a glance

For District building owners, energy performance has become a regulatory subject. DOEE's Building Energy Performance Standards apply to privately owned buildings with at least 50,000 square feet of gross floor area and to District-owned or instrumentality-owned buildings with at least 10,000 square feet, and they aim to cut energy use and emissions across the city's existing buildings. ISO 50001 does not replace the filings, but it supplies the routine behind them: an energy review, significant energy uses, a baseline, performance indicators, objectives and management review. Sterling's New York office builds the system with building engineers and facilities teams, tracks actions in Effivity and prepares the audit by an accredited certification body. Local questions follow.

Requirements

What ISO 50001 requires

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 50001 requires a company to prove six things about how it manages and improves energy performance.

You know where the energy goesAn energy review shows how energy is used and consumed and identifies the areas of significant energy use.
Baselines and indicators are setEnergy performance is measured against a baseline using indicators that suit your operations.
Leadership commits to improvementTop management sets an energy policy, objectives and targets, and appoints a team with authority to act.
Significant uses are controlledOperation, maintenance and design affecting significant energy uses follow defined criteria, and energy is considered in purchasing.
Data is collected and checkedEnergy data is planned, measured and analysed so that improvement can be demonstrated rather than assumed.
Performance actually improvesAction plans are delivered, results are evaluated, and the system is audited and reviewed so energy performance keeps improving.

ISO 50001 in Washington DC: questions clients ask

Which District buildings are covered by BEPS?

Privately owned buildings with at least 50,000 square feet of gross floor area, and District-owned or instrumentality-owned buildings with at least 10,000 square feet. DOEE administers the standards and sets the filing duties, so owners should confirm their building's status and deadlines with the agency.

Does ISO 50001 satisfy the Building Energy Performance Standards?

No. BEPS is measured against its own performance metrics and filings, and ISO 50001 is a voluntary management system. They work well together, because an energy review, baseline and monitoring give an owner reliable data and a plan for improving performance, which makes compliance work more manageable.
