ISO 14001 certification in Washington DC at a glance
Most District organisations are tenants, not factory owners, so environmental management arrives through leases, procurement questionnaires and campus sustainability plans. DOEE's Building Energy Performance Standards add pressure for owners of larger buildings, and big mixed-use projects such as the St. Elizabeths East Campus bring their own construction and operating aspects. ISO 14001 gives universities, property managers, contractors and service firms a structure for identifying environmental aspects, tracking legal duties, setting objectives and auditing results. It does not meet the District's energy rules on its own. Sterling's New York office builds the system with facilities and operations leads and prepares the audit by an accredited certification body, with Sterling Academy training included. Local questions follow.

ISO 14001 in Washington DC: questions clients ask
Does DOEE require ISO 14001 for District buildings?
No. DOEE's Building Energy Performance Standards address energy performance of covered buildings and do not name ISO 14001. The standard still gives owners and managers a systematic register of environmental aspects, legal duties and objectives. Confirm coverage and filing duties with DOEE.
Who asks DC organisations for ISO 14001?
Principal contractors, landlords and institutional customers who add environmental management to supplier questionnaires, and funders of universities and research bodies. Many District organisations are tenants rather than owners, so the request often arrives through a lease or a service contract.
